What is your single best advice on keyword selection?

I am building squidoo lenses and want to review some products there. Since squidoo lens is just a single page, I get confused over the number of keywords to go for

It would be helpful if you can share your best strategy for keyword selection and single page optimization!

if your looking to sell stuff and go for buyers keywords then consider the following:

    the product "review"
    best
    top rated
    cheap
    best deals
    discount
    price comparison

these are just a few, but if you go after these types of keywords your conversions will be way higher because people are in the buying mode

Pick your main keyword the around 3 long tail keywords for a given article. Don't target too many or you spread yourself thin and your article quality will suffer. You'll likely get some long tail keyword traffic you didn't intentionally target just by writing a long, high quality, article.

Usually the safe number is 1-2%, so for every 100 words of your squidoo lense you can safely have 1 keyword without stuffing too much.

One of the best ways to discover the top keyword for our niche is to run an AdWords campaign and study impression data. The keyword tool works as well, but with impression data you can find nuggets of gold in there in terms of keywords.

If you really want to discover the most effective keyword, think about tracking conversions in AdWords. In my experience most industries have two or three keywords that drive a huge percentage of the sales. Once you know via paid advertising you can create an SEO strategy to rank for your top keyword phrases that you know will convert.

      Correct!
I think that's the best advice here so far, take it or leave it.

Single piece of advise: Don't challenge yourself to much it is better to rank for a long tail keyword than to get no where for a shorter more profitable one.

    1) Long tails are where the money is at.

    2) Tick the exact box in Adwords.

Hey there...try building one lens and target 1-2 keywords only per lens.

Use the Google keyword tool and search for longtail kw's with low competition but a minimum 1000 exact match searches per month.

A good way to check competition is to open a browser then type in "yourkeyword" in quotes. The number of competing pages will show in the top left of the page.

Target keywords that return max 25k results or less... the lower the better!

Don't ignore the spoken language. How do people talk? Forums, and social media outlets are great places to learn what words are being used. Amazon reviews, too.

It may help you greatly while using your KW research software.

My source: Lots of popular lenses I've been reading
