How to successfully promote a video Blog (or any kind of site) [Procedure]

Dear warriors,

Bill (Bearly) is starting an online project to teach art trough HD videos so he asked for advice on Jon Wedel's sales page of his Traffic Shockware report.

I think that Bill's project is awesome and I'd wish to provide some advice to him. Since this information might be of interest to many I have decided to spend 'some' time writing a check list.

Well, let's go:
  1. Choose a nice catching name for your domain (com).
  2. I prefer Cpanel Hosting. Learn how to schedule backups. It' very easy.
  3. Create a self hosted blog on your domain (WordPress.org)
  4. For GTD (faster startup), don't waste too much time searching for a theme. You can change it later. Choose one that includes the possibility of using child themes from wordpress.org.
  5. Publish an article every 15 days or so. It's much better to write a good article than many of medium quality.
  6. Start building a list from day 1. MailChimp is good and free until you reach 2,000 subscribers.
  7. Offer discounts to your social media followers and newsletter subscribers.
  8. Don't spam or send mail only for promotional purposes. Provide useful advice on your newsletter as well as selected resources related to your niche (optionally you can earn commissions as an affiliate).
  9. Create an account at Posterous.
  10. Connect your blog to Posterous (Posterous will post on your blog and many social networks in one go). See my reply to Paul for a good procedure).
  11. Create one account on the main social sites.
  12. You'll have to learn how to connect all social networks with Posterous and with your blog, so whenever you publish something on the blog (website) will be reflected on all your social networks automagically.
  13. Post images and learn how to take advantage of Pinterest. There are several courses here at the WF.
  14. Create a page on Facebook and provide incentives for users to like your page. This way you will be able to publish your news on their wall (viral effect). The idea is to drive visitors to your website, not from your website to the social networks (common mistake).
  15. Publish video demos on all the video sharing sites you can find.
  16. YouTube is the King and people will watch your videos on their TVs, phones, tablets...
  17. Write complete descriptions for the videos, tag them with related keywords that people use to search for your products, put only one link to an article page of your site containing additional information regarding that specific video.
  18. 1 video = 1 description -> Link to an article on your site. Most people put the links always pointing to their home page. Don't do that. You need to obtain relevancy for each of your inner pages.
  19. Search for blogs and forums in your niche and post useful comments and advice. In short: Don't cheat. Tell the truth.
  20. Don't use always the same keyword in the backlink anchor text. Quality content, variations and relevancy are the keys to rank in Goolge.
  21. Build some links pointing to all of your posts, to the video demos and to your comments. Again: Never repeat the same anchor text or content.
  22. Create a Google Local Business account and fill it to its fullest. Build some links to your local profile (almost no one does).
  23. Submit your site to RSS directories. The feed should not contain the entire article, just the snippet. You can setup this setting inside WordPress configuration panel.
  24. Always call to action on your articles.
  25. Never distract your visitors or take them out of the site. Choose a clean design. Easy reading, please!. Check your spelling. Don't fill the site with an excessive number of ads. For example, just one animated item if you want to bring attention to something.
  26. The bounce rate is important to rank in Goolge. The more time people stay on your site the better.
  27. Always take care of your customers and visitors.
  28. Don't waste your time purchasing things you're not going to use immediately.
  29. Learn to do all these things manually. Later you can learn to automate some procedures but firstly it's necessary to understand the basics.
  30. And the most important one: Follow me on twitter and Facebook

In this list I just pretend to provide some of the fundamental steps to build a successful website (please don't blame me if I have forgotten something. I have built this list on the spur of the moment ;-). Obviously too many topics are covered here and there is a lot to dig and a lot to learn but my intention is to show the right path to follow based on my own experience. Most things just require some practice and can be learned easily. For the rest, there are are many training resources available here at the Warrior Forum (currently I'm devouring all I can about the in and outs of info-products and affiliate marketing).

Finally I'd wish to highlight that it's essential to put most of the effort on the site. Invest about 70% of the time improving it and a 30% on all the rest. Google loves content, Google loves videos, Goolge loves images. Google loves what the people love (social signals and on-site behaviors).

HTH,
Diego

P.S. Please excuse me if my English is not very good. Suggestions to improve my skills are always welcome
*Note 1. Any suggestion to improve the list?

Please note:
I can't extend on explanations one every possible subject derived from this list.

Can you imagine the time required?

So, sorry but:

No more specific questions
other than suggesting
ideas & improvements regarding the procedure.

Thanks

Now is your turn: learn about each point, put it into practice.
Only then you will appreciate the real value of the information shared here for free.

Great insights here. I was wondering how do you pull visitors from let's say Youtube to your site?

      Thanks Locke,

      See point 17:
Write complete descriptions for the videos, tag them with related keywords that people use to search for your products, put only one link to an article page of your site
Doing it this way you have more chances to attract visitors. People interested in your videos may be interested in visiting your site as well. Don't you agree?
To put the url you just have to write it. No code is required. YouTube detects that it's a url and it's automatically converted. Don't forget to build some links from quality sites pointing to your profile and to your videos (using proper anchor text variations as usual). Very few people build links to their links (2nd tier) on 2.0 video properties.
I also use to write comments (useful ones) on related videos to get links to my profile.

      Best,
      Diego

    Diego,

I see that you mention linking you blog to Posterous. I don't really know Posterous, but I went and looked at it, it seems like a blogging platform in it own right.

What happens if you link a WP press to Posterous, do you just get a duplicate blog? What the idea?

    Thanks

    Hi Paul,

    Good question.

Basically, the power of Posterous is the distribution of your posts to many social networks in one go. You can also post using email or your phone.

Currently Posterous support the following social networks:
    • Facebook- Profiles and Pages
    • Twitter
    • LinkedIn
    • Blogger
    • Tumblr
    • WordPress (XML-RPC must be enabled)
    • Drupal
    • Flickr
    • Picasa
    • YouTube
    • Vimeo
    • Scribd
    Source: Posterous KB (Supported services)

Regarding your concerns about duplicate content, my advice is to post a snippet on Posterous and a link at the bottom of the text pointing to the page or post on your WP blog.
For example, an introduction, an index, an attractive header or any other magnetic text intended to gather peoples' attention and to drive them to read the entire article.

After that, modify the text or replace it for the full version on your WP blog. This way you will get the benefits provided by Posterous and avoid duplicate issues since you're publishing an extended or different version on your blog.

An additional benefit of this tactic is that people interested in reading the entire article must visit your website.

Combine this with a good WP plugin to get "likes" and "follows" and some related post to minimize the bounce rate and you are "almost" done ;-)

    All the Best,
    Diego

    Hey Diego,
Thanks for your list and your time putting it together. I already have the membership site setup to launch. I had the keyword research done ,bought the domain ,had a wordpress theme made , setup the site and I have 6 full drawing lessons {36 parts}streaming from vzaar and I'm adding 1-2 every weekend . I have a gallery setup {nextgen} so the members can upload their work for me to critique ,a forum for suggestions on future videos and interact with me and each other. And lots more. I have been trying to make money online for 2 years with a bunch of different systems always something missing or too much work ,to advanced.{spent a couple of grand on making nothing.} Until Jim Daniels saw my art site {langisart.com} and told me I need to teach . Then the lightbulb went on .I would be helping people ,at something I have been doing my whole life. The only thing I need now is how to get the most traffic, the guy that did my keyword research gave me domain suggestions and competition stats so the competiton was pretty easy,I have only done article writing,a press release, reviews, and a few other things this is the first wordpress site I have built. Thats why I thought press release as they go to the top fast but don't stay there, and you tube video as google owns it and I already have videos ,so I condensed a couple and made a speed drawing with link at the bottom 2/3 of the way through. I don't know much about backlinks except forum posting and blog posting but have never done any of it. I just need to get up there fast then find a way to stay {34 yrs of construction and hate it I want out by years end}.I know I have to think long term also but even 250 subscribers pays all my bills and takes the pressure off my construction . 500 is ten grand a month I already have a hundred from word of mouth. Thats why I was looking for a quick start then do the backlinking and long term stuff .I have a good product if you want to see it's {estepbystepdarwing.com.} Again I appreciate all your work, I was hoping to find a step by step on each traffic method so I could do it. I have a lot of friends that said they would post on facebook. I do want to hit the 1000 mark of subscribers but having made nothing up to this point on every other method. I know this is the one as It's my passion and I have been asked thousands of times if I could teach people over the years. I just need traffic.

    Thanks, Bill

      Thanks, Bill
      Hello Bill.

Yes I understand your problem but think about this: How are you going to get traffic for nothing? Not to mention subscriptions, of course.

Yes, teaching sells. I agree 100% on that. As a general procedure I mean, not only in the training niche. But, Bill, you need to explain the benefits and details of your product very well and to prove the value of your offer.

And yes, the membership model is very attractive but also very competitive. You have to compete with well established business already offering courses and subscriptions. I don't want to dishearten but you have to be realistic. It can be done but it requires work and some skills.

      I have visited your sites.
langisart.com: (outdated design. Nothing really valuable. Well, yes your contact information and a few examples of your work).
estepbystepdrawing.com: This is much better and you have a powerful system here but again no content at all. You're on the right path with this site.

At this point, I think that you should concentrate 95% on the development of your website.

Provide a real value to the visitors on your site. Quality content and call to action are the basement to get traffic, to rank high, to get subscribers and finally to get members.

Yes, you should start learning about social media but RIGHT NOW you need to BUILD YOUR SITE:
      • Offering information about your products
      • Learning how to sell
      • Improving your copy-writing skills (from a marketing point of view)
      • Gathering subscribers to your list.

You might be interested in this:
      What is Teaching Sells?
Teaching Sells (To register for updates). I'm subscribed to their newsletter (since I'm a client of Brian Garner) and only can say good things about all I have read from them.

Look, I have been doing SEO for more than 12 years working for REAL business. You can trust 100% in the advice provided in this list. There is a lot of crap out there sidetracking too many entrepreneurs outside the right path.

You love art, you love drawing (and you do it very well, BTW). You also love teaching, have the will and the resources. The website is based on WordPress (the right platform) and it is almost ready. And now you know what are the next steps to take. All these points represent an extraordinary advantage to get your dream come true.

      All the best,
      Diego

Well, even while it takes a lot of effort and too much time I simply can't shirk the responsibility to supply a pleasant reading. Good is never enough for me. For example, in this particular case, I could have completed the job in about 60 minutes in Spanish. In the end, it took about 4 hours to complete the whole thing in English.

I must read and correct almost every word and sentence several times. Very often it's even required to rewrite entire paragraphs which completely changes the meaning of the rounding sentences. It's worth the effort because I learn and improve every single day. In addition, I really believe that people investing their valuable time in reading my articles deserve the best quality I can provide. This is the main reason why I have not developed a website about SEO in English language yet. In order to be productive, I still need to improve my copy-writing skills a lot.

I really appreciate your proposal but you have to know that, at this time, I'm involved in a zillion projects (too many, for sure) so it might take some time to start a new adventure. I have never launched my own products either (only my off-line services). That's exactly my weakest point. Therefore, over the last years I gathered most of the resources and knowledge required to compound my own sales platform and procedures.

On a more positive side, I have been into SEO & PPC since 1999 so I have a powerful background to drive segmented traffic to a site and take the most from it afterwards (many details are involved as you know).

Anyway, I'll PM so you can tell me about your thoughts if you wish. It's very possible that we can arrange an agreement to successfully complement our hardly acquired skills ;-)

      Hi, KBrown.

      Thanks for your kind words

Yes, you're right. That's indeed the idea: Providing a practical, powerful and easy to follow checklist to not overwhelm to startups (I'm also a startup in many things).

In my opinion, many people over complicate the "SEO thing" when it's mostly a question of common sense. After all, the Google algorithm main purpose is to satisfy their "customers" providing the best possible results . Google is always searching for quality content. Help Google on that and Google will reward you in return. That is my own experience (with very few exceptions).

Some aspects require practice but, for the most part nothing listed here is difficult at all. Sure, learning requires effort and time but the tools listed here are intended for general use. Nothing over-complicated.

Starting from here, maybe I'll write a more detailed version in a near future and, probably, sell it for a few bucks as a WSO. Of course, I'll inform my followers about this and, in the meantime, I'll keep sharing the best resources that I find to succeed on-line.

Apart from that, I'm just wondering:

Almost 300 visits and nobody rating the article or clicking on the "thanks" button yet? Wow, How difficult is to convert here ;-)

Maybe many people is not aware that it's possible to evaluate the threads where it says "Rate Thread" at the top right side of each page. If you like thread, rate it. If you like a post, please push the "Thanks" button. Come on guys & gals, it just takes a mere fraction of a second!

Have you found it difficult to read or hard to understand? Any suggestion for improvements? Grammar or remarkable style mistakes? Any opinion is valuable to me.

      Thanks,

        Thanks,
What is interesting about the "Thank" button is it does not appear in every browser. I am currently on your site (which has "great" information) in Chrome. There is only a 'Quote' button at the bottom right corner. Nothing at the top of the post. However, I logged on in FireFox and now see four buttons at the bottom of the page. One of which is a 'Thank' button.

Your list is fantastic. I pushed the 'Thank' button

I guess it's not possible to say how much time it could take. It varies from person to person and business type. I wrote the list only with the idea of providing a practical procedure on the most useful actions to take to promote a site. Most of the points are just tips and advice, some require just a few minutes a day while others take time but are worth the effort. The most time consuming task are creating valuable articles and videos but these are the pillars for further promotion on social media and link building campaigns. Of course, there are many factors involved: your level of expertise, the niche and competition, wherever you prefer developing content and/or interacting on social media channels, your budget to outsource part of the work and so on and on. No matter what you hear, success requires effort, time and continuity.

Anyhow, I like your question in order to calculate a timeframe for each task. Maybe in a future WSO
          Thanks Randall.
