Do people buy textbooks instead of easy to read, cheaper books?

I find that in many niches there are a plethora of books priced around $10-$20. These books are easily readable, sometimes entertaining or at least not boring and generally contain (if carefully selected) good advice. One could call them "commercial books".

However, I want to recommend more expensive books, books that are aimed mostly at professionals. These are generally better researched, have more information, and go into greater depths about the subject. On the downside, the writing is more formal, more factual, and usually with little to no personality, because they are addressed to professionals or professionals to be (students). Also the price is higher as well, many of them are well over $100.

Do you think they will appeal to the average reader that is accustomed to reading commercial books, even though they are in general better at solving their problem?

If I were to promote such books, I will present them as they are aimed at professionals, but by reading them my prospects will get a better view over the matter than most of his amateur peers.

      No way.

I've had a lot of those so called textbooks over the years. I would never sit down and read one unless I had to for a course or something.

I suppose you can test it.

I agree with Fin on this one.

I think regardless of the topic (or the readers level of professionalism), people prefer an enjoyable reading experience.

In purchasing book, I am very much selective. Before price, I like to check the standard of the book. Books generally written for students are very much boring and cover more details than necessary. You will find some books written for professional people. These books are well in covering contents. Though, you know, the market is too small for these types of book.

textbooks are often boring than the so called commercial books as their sole aim is to provide knowledge pertaining to a particular course which is not the case with commercial books..

Hi, I'll have to agree that your market will be limited. I just cannot imagine many people who'd want to read textbook type books unless they need the extra information for whatever reason (e.g. if they were doing some sort research).

It may be better to market the books as providing professional level information but "made easy enough to be understood by the layperson".

Still, I'm not sure if there will be a large enough pool of interested buyers.

Only one way to find out, though - which is to test it.

    Cheers, Cheryl
