Wordpress post settings help

hey guys, I have a custom blog theme made and for some reason the homepage is showing up the full posts rather than an excerpt. I know if you go into the index.php and change from 'content' to 'excerpt' in the coding it should change. But the problem is that I don't even see anything in the index.php section. It is entirely blank and i did try adding the coding but nothing happens.
Does anyone know how I can change the settings to just show a snippet on the homepage? I have changed the post settings in reading menu too but it does nothing I think thats just for the rss feed. Help please, much appreciate.

Here's something that may help you HERE

Have you messed with PHP before? If so, or if not, make sure you are ready to FTP and replace theme files, because if you get one wrong comma in that code the whole thing goes haywire....I've done it many times.

    Good luck
