which bank for a non-resident US account?

Hello all,

I've read a few old posts about this but no clear solution.
I'm a foreigner residing in South Korea and I have a website that sells mainly to the US via Paypal.
I've discovered that due to some specific Korean regulation about Paypal, as a foreigner I can't transfer money from Paypal to my Korean bank account. So I have to use the accounts of Korean friends, and the other problem is that due to another regulation, the dollars wired onto a Korean bank account are automatically converted into local currency, even if you have an account in dollars.
Ridiculous.
I'm therefore trying to see if I can open a non-resident bank account in the US.
Citibank tells me that I would have to keep a balance of 50K permanently on the account.
Does anyone know of a bank that doesn't require such a large amount to always be on the account?

Thanks in advance for your advice
A

    Hi,

I live in Canada and I have a bank account in the US with Wells Fargo. They have always treated me well and I'm happy with them. Don't know of any other banks that might be good, though

The best bank for international business is HSBC bar none.

You can accept payments in a U.S. account and transfer to your international accounts worldwide.

There are certain procedures to follow. Hit me up if you want more details.

Yes, to apply with a US billing address you need to have a valid SSN, due to US regulations.

You don't need to pay anything when you order the card. There is then an annual fee, and indeed you pay 1% of each payment received to the US Payment Service. All fees are listed on the application and your My Account page.

You can check the balance via our website at any time, to avoid any ATM charges.

For Canadians, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) now has branches in the US, and can now easily setup an account at one of their US branches for you.

    Hello,

Thanks for your advice but HSBC requires me to keep a permanent balance of 100K on the account. I would like to be a HSBC since they have a strong presence in Asia, but I don't want to have to keep such a high balance.

Asiancasanova, do you reside in Asia permanently?

That's only for the premier accounts.

I'm based in Asia and had no problem connecting my Paypal to a HSBC account. There was an admin fee of around $100 US but that's it.

On terms of fees they want around $3000 in the account minimum however if you drop below that there is a small fee per month.

HSBC are a complete shambles in Asia compared to Europe ( I have a UK account and 2 Hong Kong accounts). But once it's set up its all straight forward.

      PM me for info

Payoneer is the best, you can have a virtual US bank account and they only charge $20 per year for it, all the money you get via PayPal, you have the option of sending it to your virtual account, then withdraw the money via an ATM in your own country using a Payoneer Master card.

As mentioned above, Payoneer's US Payment Service is an excellent option for non-US residents to receive US ACH/Direct Deposit transfers.

I also wanted to point out that we no longer charge a maintenance fee for the service, you pay only 1% of each payment received. Application for the service is open to all Payoneer card holders.

Additional details regarding the service can be found here.

If you have the option to add a debit card to our PayPal account, you will be able to add your Payoneer card (as it is a Prepaid Debit MasterCard card).

Please note, however, that your card will need to have an available balance when adding it to PayPal, as they will try to charge the card (and it is prepaid).

Thanks for getting back to me so fast.
Are your card working on Moneybookers? This is very important for me to know.

          And one more:
If I create an account with card through Fiverr (as I noticed they use your service to withdraw funds), will I be able to acquire US Payment Service later on?

          Thank you in advance

              Alright, I just order it.
              Now.. one more thing

Beside the $2.00 fee to load the card in 2 days (otherwise is $5), It is another $3.00 fee/month for 0-3 transactions/month.

Transactions are considered also purchases with the card or ONLY loading money to the cared?
I repeat. I ordered this through Fiverr. When I will subscribe to US Payment Service and load $$$ through Paypal, will this also be considered a transaction or only loading money through Fiverr are transactions?

              Thanks a lot

    Hi,

I'm french, living in Brazil, and I do business in the US.
To solve this issue, opened a Corporation in Delaware, requested an EIN, and contacted Wells Fargo in Wilmington (the city where my company was registered)
The minimum account balance is only $100 there, and they have online banking, 24/7 phone services (it's a robot, but works really well, even when you have a slight accent)

You won't be able to open a personal bank account tho.

If you are interested, contact me and i'll send you my contacts.

The whole process took about 30 days and cost around $1000.
If you want to hire an accountant (recommended, as there are a lot of tricky things to know when reporting your earnings and paying taxes), add an extra $1500/year in accounting fees.

Okay, I think that you haven't read the original post.
The problem is getting money out of your Paypal account when you can't open a bank account in the US. Otherwise there would be no issue.

I have just received a reply from Paypal saying that they did NOT allow withdrawals to a Payoneer virtual bank account.
So the service is useless in this case.

The Payoneer US Payment Service is not a bank account, but provides you with a US account/routing number that you can use to receive US ACH transfers. This would solve the problem, as it allows you to receive a US account/routing number without having to open an actual bank account.

Payoneer is not an official payment method for PayPal, which is likely why you received the reply that you did. This would simply be a US bank withdrawal, however, and we currently have many card holders receiving their payments via this method.

Hey Mate, I recommend incorporating a business in the US, I also highly recommend New Mexico, because you would not need to pay any annual fees or tax, like other states such as Delaware where one would still need to pay at least a annual minimum of $250.

make sure you have a reliable address as this is the most important part to the puzzle. I am not a fan of pre-paid cards. once you have an EIN, address and articles, you can find a bank to open an account with for a minimum deposit of $200. I have an account in the US without having to fly over there. Having a business checking account is a lot better asset than having a prepaid card, however I am not say it a bad thing tho.

        Get a mail forwarding service.
They'll give you a US address you can legally use on your US company.
I used Valis (VALIS International - Delaware LLC | Company Corporation | Corporation or LLC | DE Corp | Limited Company | Inc or LLC |) to incorporate my company. They are also my registered agent, and handle the mail forwarding.
They were super useful and always available when you have a question.
They also refered me to an account manager at Wells fargo, which allowed me to open a US bank account for the company, and refered me to an accounting firm, which now handle my accounting and taxes.

Please note that if you're not a US citizen, you can only open a non-anonymous Corporation, and you'll need an EIN. Else, no bank account.

I don't know if I understood well or not, because not very familiar with these terms

I live out of the US, not a citizen, so what kind of business could I apply for? what would be a non-anonymous corporation?

These type of mail services WILL get rejected by the bank because everyone has already used the same address, also these addresses are not actual business address. What banks do now, they google street map the addresses to see if they are legitimate business locations, that is why when applying to a bank you should NEVER use your registered agent address.

Yes, with our service we are having great success because everything is done manually, also lots of standard documents are required, where most people are to lazy to get sorted. You are not required to visit USA, everything can be done via email AND post.

What about accounting? Do you know about the requirements over there?

      Hello All,

I have read all the post and I must say that some of the posts are valid while some are not.

Yes its i possible to get this sorted out if you know how. Not everyone knows this, hence the different answers.

Payoneer may work, but to get the card, you need to meet some conditions. Not everyone will pass this. They will also only work with some companies.

Getting a biz bank account can set you back several hundreds of dollars. Forming a US biz comes with an additional yearly tax reporting and filing implications. You could need a Lawyer / Accountant which means additional yearly expense. Not everyone can afford this. The guy looking for this could be getting a few hundreds monthly in affiliate commissions.

There is a cheaper solution to this - a US PAYROLL card. But the problem here is that 98% of the providers will ask for a SSN. So the problem is locating the remaining 2% who will not.

      Good luck to everyone.

If you are serious about running a business in the USA, I recommend that you get a real bank account, It is not difficult, I have been doing this for a while now. This myth about non USA people cant open a bank account in the USA without visiting the bank, Is total false.

Transactions are when you use the card; so it would include any purchase online/in stores, or a cash withdrawal.

Currently US residents are not able to apply directly from Payoneer.com, however you can submit an application through any of our official partners (companies/sites that pay with Payoneer).

ah... thats ok... I am not a US citizen and do not live in USA... I live in Lebanon... but I have a mail forwarding service in USA that I wanted to use because the card will arrive much faster this way

If not available, I will order it to my address in Lebanon directly.

So, I will need to pay $30 to get the card, 1% per ACH transfer I get, and then about 3.5$ everytime I use the ATM to withdraw the funds? (and since the limit is 500$ a day from most ATM machines, this means 3.5$ per 500$ withdrawn)... is that true? and any additional fees?

          Thanks

Ok I exaggerate, but screw that, I am never getting a US bank account again. Clickbank now sends cash directy to my oz bank direct debit. Thank the good lord.

I requested the Payoneer card long time ago and it never arrived to my address in Colombia. The support team told me to request a new card which I won't do because it's a waste of time for me. How can I know if my card wasn't issued at all, or probably got lost in its way?

and sorry.. a third thing... I read somewhere that to be able to receive the US ACH transfer, I should have received at least 3 previous payments to the card? is this still valid? and if I am going to get the card from you directly, rather than from the partners, will this condition still apply?

All what I want to get is the payments from createspace, Amazon and PayPal.

      Thanks again

I also use HSBC as it has many safeguards fr online use. In addition they have branches in many, many countries. The problem I have found (at least in the US) is that you much have an account opened in another country also to transfer funds AND to do this you must be present IN PERSON to do this...
Of course this is no problem if you travel a lot or are planning a move.

      Hello Nissim,

A new question please. I am waiting for my personal card to arrive in the mail.

A friend of mine has a registered LLC in New Mexico. Is it possible for him to open an account (through a partner) and get the payooner card in the name of his company rather than his personal name? and will the virtual bank account he gets from you will be in the name of the company too?

..I never bother to sign-up with Payoneer, I already have a Neteller card and never use it.

Actually, I'm interested in opening a HSBC USA Basic Banking account. I'm already member of HSBC locally for almost a year, I have passport, I'm from Argentina (not a prohibited country). But I don't have a US street address for submitting and billing purposes. Also, I need to setup my US phone number (using ipkall + google voice). BUT I need to have my US address first in order to match both locations (area code + zip address).

I don't want to use a PO box nor any forwarding package company addresses. I need a real US street address. what do you recommend?

I needed a bank account for my llc in USA, HSBC via my country was a dead end. They needed me to already be running a business of 1 million revenue with them to qualify for a us bank business account. After i spoke at three levels.

Harris as other Canadian on WF mentioned only entertains American & Canadian citizens.

The bancorp, key, Siliconvalley bank, Citi, chase all a waste of time.

You will need professional help from within USA to help set a bank account there for you.Try calling all the banks on phone & telling your situation. They will say come to usa here personally for validation. I got my help from a another llc owner`s cpa, who helped me open a business bank account with a debit card sent to my residence for only 250 dollars.
