Monetizing an Educational Website

Hey folks,

My website is aimed at the health sector and trying to educate folks in the area of pharmacology, medicine and so forth. I didn't initially set it up as a money-making-mechanism but I've since wondered about what potentialities it may have. However, from reading this website I'm wondering if the potential is limited.

For example, folks here talk about affiliate marketing and setting up blogs etc. However, my site is purely educational and my aim is for it to be the best source for students worldwide in areas related to drugs as a review style source. My content has already been positively reviewed and my accompanying blog also appears to be popular.

So, I took the advice of folks here who told me to check out keywords on Google Keyword Tool, which I did. I searched 'Pharmacology' as this is the main bulk of my site. The statistics came back as follows:

Competition: Low
Global Monthly Searches: 823,000
Local Monthly Searches: 60,500

Are these good stats or what? I'm not sure how to interpret this.

So is this type of website, being an educational one, a viable way to monetize and make cash. If so, what mechanisms can I employ to try and maximize this?
Second, how do I interpret the figures of the keyword I chose and are these good figures?

Any help is much appreciated! :-)

Adsense would be your simplest option. There are many high paying advertisers in the health/education niche.

If it is the site in your signature, I would start by better placing the ads.

I haven't focussed on placing the ads really because I didn't want to clutter the place up and make it look unprofessional as I'm essentially a 'Newbie' when it comes to this stuff. Any recommendations as to where I should place them then, and should I use images/pictures rather than text?
      Thanks for the comment !

You have a lot of choices.

    -----

If it were me, I would move that 336x280 ad in the sidebar you have up above the log in section and change it to image only.

I would shrink the logo and put a leaderboard next to it and have it both text/image.

And I would fit a 300x250 or 250x250 in the individual articles either wrapped in first paragraph or after the article.

    ----
Another option is to have a leaderboard above the Title/under your navigation bar.

Okay, thanks for the advice, appreciated - I'll certainly take heed of it over the next few days when I edit them in.

Has anyone any other recommendations specifically concerning monetizing an educational resource maximally? And how should I interpret the figures from Google Keyword search? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Your monetizing should include CPA of some online educational course.

If you attract people looking to apply to American schools, I might have a simple solution for you. If you have enough traffic, I can set up a clone of my client's academic processing site based on a domain set aside specially for your traffic. Any sales made by that site is credited to you. Contact me on Skype if you're interested.

Do you mind being more specific - I'm sort of new to all this and terms like CPA go over my head :-)

Oh by the way, the clone site option pays $100 to $200 per sale. You have to have traffic though and must be able to PROVE it This is a serious offer. This industry is hot but your traffic must fit the niche. We will set up the site for free but we must be sure you actually have traffic to make this worth the bother.

Could anyone who has the knowledge please instruct me on the value of these numbers in the google keyword finder...
