Question about domain names

I know that everyone says you must have a .com domain name. However, what do you do if you can't get it?

I am writing a series of books and I want a domain name that matches my title. However, that domain name is not available as a .com.

The .biz name is available and I could get the .net with a hyphenated name. I do not want to change my book's title for the sake of the domain name.

Pleae give me your suggestions about how to best deal with this.

Thanks,

Have you considered using a keyword related to the topic of your book as the domain name instead of the exact name of the book?

Yes, and the keywords I want to use are those that are in the title of my book! I have also spent quite a bit of time looking at other possible keywords but none of them are available as a .com either. I wish they were!

If these are business related books then the .biz would work, but if they are about something other than business I would definitely go with the .net.

For SEO alot of people say a dot com is better, the same as if you are trying to sell a domain, but for a general web address I don't think it makes too much difference. I'd go with the .biz

If the domain you want is not been used in a website maybe you could try contacting the owner to ask if could be interested in selling it to you. In the case the owner would be interested in selling it and the amount is acceptable for you I think would be good, but I don't know how important is this proyect to you.

Is a "dissenting opinion" welcome, here?

Personally, I almost certainly wouldn't want to set up and run a business on a domain-name of which the .com variant already belonged to someone else. (I don't often use them, myself, but I buy them to make sure nobody else can own them).

However, that said, of the two options you've mentioned I would choose the hyphenated .net, firmly, clearly and definitely, 100 times out of 100.

It doesn't matter much what you and I think. We're marketers.

What matters is what your (potential) customers like.

When I did a large-scale "feedback exercise" with my customers/subscribers about which domains they liked/disliked and why, I got overwhelming feedback that they particularly disliked .biz domains. For me, since I have more or less the same customer demographics in every niche in which I do business, that would be pretty decisive. For myself, the .biz is one of the ones I'd avoid.

(For SEO purposes, all TLD's, with and without hyphens, are exactly the same, of course - as Google goes to such great lengths to clarify for people, because there's quite a bit of misinformation about, on this subject. But you're - very sensibly - not asking from an SEO perspective, anyway, I think?)

I wouldn't go with .biz. Have had some bad experiences with it.

But I would try to go with a .com however possible.

.com, .net and .org are the 3 you would want to concentrate on, the others not so much so.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts. I really appreciate you sharing your research, Alex. Thanks a bunch!

I think I will go with the hyphenated .net. And I do know that Google doesn't recognize hypnehs, so that's a help.

Additionally, I checked the .com name and it is owned by a big publishing house, so I don't suspect they would want to sell it or if they did it probably would cost a fortune.

Your prospects will get the idea, and will link your website domain to your book title. Just go out there and start making sales, instead of thinking too hard on this topic.

  • I myself in some confusion about these subjects. After reading all the comments, my confusion become higher. I do not personally prefer other domain extension but .com domains. I do not think that a hyphenate will make a big difference.

biz are crap domains. It would cost a bit more but have you considered a .co? If not, I'd go with the .net.

Yup, I did look at the .co but it was already taken too. I think I will be going with the .net as you suggest after reading that .biz are not so great.

It's not the end of the world. As we know, any domain can be ranked for any topic. Bandanabuzzorama.com could be ranked for well, anything. Now, we like exact match domains b/c people like to see them in search results, they make sense, and maybe for SEO but that is debatable by many. There's nothing wrong with a hyphenated dot net. Dot biz could be great for a business book!

It's hard to give really good advice without knowing your title, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway.

First, I wouldn't use the .biz at all.

Next, I'd be really concerned about the fact that a big publishing house owns the .com version of the name. I think I'd actually go for something a little different just because of that (echoing Alexa's sentiments on this). I suspect you'll get steam-rolled somehow some way.

I actually would still go for a .com if possible (ideally without hyphens), but I'd start looking for something related to some concept or idea from your book, something brandable, more like a tag-line or something. I wouldn't worry about the length so much, short or long. These days even big companies are using long tail keyword domains more. I wish I could give an example but without knowing your title or anything, my brain is drawing a blank on coming up with one. (One option would be to add your author name somehow into the domain... and that is unlikely to be registered!)

If can't get the .com for the titles of your books, a way to go around it is get the similar names closest to the titles so you still can get the .com names.

Definately stay away from Biz. I only use .com's. I would try hyphens or something similar to the title. If your customers like your book whatever your domain name is..they will know

I would say, don't use the same name if .com version is already taken. Do some changes in the domain name that resembles your site.
But then if you want to have the same name go for .co instead of .biz.
