My 1 Year Anniversary: 10 Things I've Learned Since Joining The Warriorforum.

For those of you that don't know me, I'm Ross Cohen. Unique username, eh? I'm a 22 year old self-proclaimed entrepreneur living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I joined the Warriorforum after finding it apparently 1 year ago, and I don't remember why.

Just having started in Internet marketing some time prior (several months, perhaps?), the name of the forum threw me off. Warriorforum? Sounded like some fighting arena! Nope, it was for Internet marketers. And darn are there a lot of you out there! The more the merrier - especially on here - people being able to ask questions and instantly get numerous responses is wonderful. It's really a great place for learning... can't think of a more interactive and fun-loving forum. Some out there (won't name any names!) are downright MEAN!

I figured a "1 year anniversary" post would go over well and provide some insight to beginners (or whoever else reads it)... so I thought why not. It's 10pm and I have nothing else to do until I fall asleep!

Without further adieu...
  1. Internet marketing is WEIRD. Sure, any business (whether online or off) will have its ups and downs... some things will go great whereas other things not so much... but with online business, you're floating on a cloud constantly and can fall through to the ground at any point! Like Google's algorithm. You put your eggs all in one basket and all of a sudden BAM! You're on the 10th page of Google and made 1/100 of how much you made the day prior. Talk about a cut in earnings. You could, depending on your lifestyle, be almost stranded on the street after a disaster like this. Diversify. Don't just rely on Google's traffic or any traffic source for that matter. It could disappear overnight.
  2. It's true, the money IS in the list. Piggybacking on my first point, your traffic could vanish instantly. Your email subscribers, though? Nope, they're there to stay... at least until you start throwing a million affiliate offers at them. Keeping a good relationship with them is SO important. If they're not expecting your life story that's fine. I'm not saying you have to let them know about your dinner every other day. A lot of people couldn't care less. But, whatever they DO want, you have to provide. As some will unsubscribe from your list no matter how great your emails are, keeping that list constantly growing is very important as well.
  3. Making money online is becoming harder and harder. While the pie isn't becoming smaller (if anything it's growing), the number of people desiring to make money online is increasing fast. A lot of beginners are being guided in a billion directions... most of which are bound for failure... but eventually they'll catch on. Hopefully. And it's true that the majority never make anything. A lot of people make a small amount of money, but you've gotta be something truly special to make the BIG bucks. It doesn't happen overnight no matter how great your product or service is. It's a process. It could take over a year - EASY!
  4. The Warriorforum really has a lot of buyers. I've been on other forums plenty... though not as activiely as on here... and there are many IM-related forums with members who seem like they're bots. I mean 99% of these members are just stagnant! You post an offer and you get 1 sale if you're lucky. On here, offer something truly of value and it WILL sell. Offer a wonderful service and you'll start getting great testimonials... then your pool of buyers will increase. It's then a snowball from that point. Same with a product. Don't forget that a single product isn't going to make you rich. It's a process. Every hugely successful launch out there involved a plethora of affiliates. You NEED affiliates - don't forget it. Keep pushing and NEVER sacrifice on quality.
  5. Social proof is everything. Launch a WSO with 4 "thanks" and 52 posts and you're not going to be very happy. People buy from people they know and most importantly like. Or at least trust in terms of their knowledge. PROVE what you know before SELLING what you know. Help people out... answer questions... just be kind! Be generous. In the long-run it's going to come back to either help you or haunt you. Don't be shy either. You can send people messages to chat. Ask them questions, or just strike up a conversation if you live in the same city... have the same views... they'll probably end up replying. Maybe even in 5 minutes.
  6. If you're planning to earn your full-time income online, don't quit your job right away. Like I said above... making money online can take a year. It can take longer... even a couple years. You might earn $100 bucks the first year and $100,00 the next... who knows! It's random like that... and of course your skill has a lot to do with it, but really creating your own brand can take a long time. Don't risk everything by quitting your full-time job before you're able to support yourself and your family. And that first month you "think" you might be able to support your lifestyle financially doesn't count. You should have consistent success for months and you should know (well... you never KNOW... but can reasonably assume) it'll last long into the future too.
  7. The COOLEST thing is getting talked about by others. You can pay for advertising on every website out there but it's going to come out your pocket. The coolest thing in the world is seeing a thread along the lines of, "who should I buy PLR from?", and seeing someone randomly write your name. With no incentive or anything! Free advertising? Heck yes! You've gotta have some extremely happy customers for that to happen, but it's worth it to overdeliver every time to make it happen. That means NEVER cheat ANYONE... they "leak" the word about your behavior and you're DONE.
  8. Shiny object syndrome happens to all of us. It's an issue, but don't regret "being diagnosed with it" for the rest of your life. When starting in IM you're bound to buy a bunch of info products to learn. Down the line you'll probably kick yourself and think, "why did I buy this?"... but the reality is: it helped you. If you read it, learned from it, you became a more knowledgeable person. Maybe that's not the business you're in now, but getting those "nuggets" of information you wouldn't have found anywhere else could have gotten you to where you are today without you even knowing. I'm a strong believer that everything happens for a reason. Anything you DON'T do in life, and of course DO do, changes the path of your life forever... whether for better or worse. Never regret. It won't get you anywhere.
  9. Put your loved ones before your online career. You know those long hours? Those long, strenuous hours you put online to enhance your business? Sometimes they can go all night... then you see it's light out and you think CRAP! You just screwed up your sleep schedule, you're going to feel SO tired the next day, and it's certainly not good for your health. Great. What did you accomplish? Finish a blog post? Things can wait until the morning. Make sure your dog isn't starving. Walk him! Talk to your kids, wife, husband... let them know you love them. Call the family, friends, whoever else is important in your life. They might not be around next week. We NEVER know what can happen the next day. Cherish EVERY moment like it's your last.
  10. Stand up. I had mentioned this in in a previous post several weeks ago (click here to read it) and in short: sitting for a large chunk of time every day is not good for you. Stretch. Walk. Run. You have legs for a reason. Getting sucked into the PC for hours at a time is so easy... so maybe you need some sort of timer. Whatever it is, do it... down the line you'll be very thankful you did.
Yay! I hope you enjoyed my "words of wisdom". Tell me what your favorite one is. If one made you nod in agreement, I've done my job. I'm excited for my second year here on the Warriorforum.

To your health, enjoyment of life, and an ever-increasing bank account,

Ross Cohen

Great post! Really good points. I've been in the game for about 10 months now and agree with mostly all of this.

Haha I really like everything. I definitely agree with spending time with family as well as making sure to get exercise since this profession can take its toll on that.

The one part I personally disagree with is waiting to quit your job. For me, the part that has caused my focus to go way up is when I quit my job 7 months ago after I was making enough to pay the bills. Doing so has helped my mindset as well as thinking full time like a business owner instead of an employee. Obviously everyone's own experience will vary, but that is what has worked for me.

Either way, great post! It's always motivating to hear stories/examples of what is working well for others.

I think that's what he's saying, though. Be able to support yourself first.

For me, quitting my job to freelance full-time was difficult. I was making about 60% of what I needed but had no hours in the day to add more freelancing to make an even switch. I make sure my biggest client knew I'd have full-time availability and she promised (happily) more work, and I lined up a few other gigs. It's been rough, but definitely worth the plunge.

Of course, I wasn't supporting a family at the time. No one to worry about but me...

Ah, totally understand. Yeah - I mean... if you have costs... like rent... and you're the "breadwinner" for the family... I'd recommend not quitting immediately. You want to provide sufficient food for the family, you know? It's for those people with a good amount of money in the bank, wealthy relatives to fall back on... those sorts of situations that would allow for one to act otherwise (at least for the most part... right?)

    I might suggest two more:

    11. Just do it. Too many people get trapped between learning and doing. It is better to get products out there, learning with each one, than to wait forever because you won't launch anything unless it is absolutely perfect. You want to provide great quality and value - but don't let it paralyze you. It can also feel quite scary to put something "out there" for everyone to see and risk rejection - but you gotta do it.

    12. Relationships are key. Relationships with peers - people who will honestly rip your sales letter to tattered shreds and help you rebuild it into a killer sales machine. Affiliates who know you and trust you to provide quality products so that they can keep their lists happy and so both you and they can make money.

Ross, let me start by saying happy one year, and that this is an amazing post. One thing that I find is people often lose focus when they start working online.

Not just that they lose focus in regards to shiny object syndrome, but they lose focus of everything. Their life, their work, their bills, their loved ones, even their pets.

Internet Marketing can be one of the most time consuming, draining, but at the same time rewarding things a person can possibly do.

Lists like these... Inventories, if you will, of what matters most to people and what they need to keep in mind if they wish to stay in this business are very important.

That being said, I just want to point out one more bullet here, that Leo actually beat me to.

The power of just going out and doing something, instead of sitting around thinking about it or planning it, or any number of other things someone could be doing instead of simply doing it.

I don't think any one idea or practice is more beneficial to internet marketers than the above bullet point. Really, it rings true in almost all aspects of life. More is learned in fifteen minutes of doing than in days of reading, listening, or watching.

But overall, I tip my hat to you Ross! and congratulations on the one year again!

Another thought about waiting to quit your "day job" if you possibly can - it can take time to develop relationships. Yes, it can take more discipline and drive to do it this way, but it drastically reduces risk. You have the freedom to try lots of things, making measurements all the time and really dial in what works for you.

    13. Learn to fail fast. Many people are paralyzed because they want to keep the dream alive. You need to fail fast in order to get the experience and knowledge required for success.

Beside that there isn't really a failure just results. A result could be good or bad and you need to look at your results and improve from that.

Great tips Ross! I love number 7. Most people say the most exciting day of their career is their first sale. Mine? The first time I popped into a thread and someone was recommending my writing service. Such a great feeling to know there are people out there that like your work enough to tell other people!

Here is another one for you guys.

    14. Never stop learning! Internet marketing is huge. It isn't just product creation, adsense, or promoting affiliate products. There is so much to it and so much to learn. I'm not saying you need to learn about every aspect, but once you pick your method, keep learning and testing to improve. Just like the average offline professional will have continuing training/education, you should as well.

Number 10 is SO important! Sitting for long periods of time is so unhealthy but most of IM takes place in front of a computer. Get up every hour to an hour and a half and at least walk around the room a few times. All the work you put into IM will mean nothing if you ruin your body in the process!

Absolutely, I couldn't emphasis this enough from personal experience. I spent a good few years hunched over my computer and ended up overnight with excruciating back pain. It has taken a full year to fully recover with major changes to how I sit in front of the computer and how long I sit in front of the computer. Wonderful tips, thank you Ross. As newbie this information is very helpful and vital.

    15. Stick to one thing first, master it before moving on.

Has been repeated into my head over a thousand times now from the people here. They mean what they say. :p

Hi Ross, congrats on your 1st year Anniversary, I for one hope you have many more, as your posts are so informative and genuinely thought provoking!
My favourite point is your first:
    1. Internet marketing is WEIRD.
I myself have said over and again here on this forum to stop the "I need to get to page 1 of Google syndrome". This is not a long term business model, and how many people (myself included in the past) have found their adsense/affiliate income dry up overnight with one algorithm change. I had a potential $20k deal on the table with one of my sites that was ranking for one of the most competitive keyterms for many months, and I had put in so many hours, for it to all turn into nothing with the panda/penguin updates. This was actually the best thing that happened to me, as it woke me up to the realisation that I had no business at all.

As one of my friends here Paulgl always says, stop thinking that Google owes you Page 1 Rankings, they owe you or I nothing. The sooner people realise this, the sooner they can really focus on building a long term business based on their individual strengths. In short IM is weird, and is also a business like any other that requires, time, effort, capital outlay and also some good luck as well!

I like your first thing that you learned, but want to add one thing.

All business is weird. Instead of building a website you could've had a sandwich shop on the corner of a busy intersection, only for that insane foot traffic to come to a halt when the city decided to start a construction project on that very corner!

I would say that you had a "business" with the website, you just didn't know how to adapt to your quickly depleted traffic!

A good list of things you've learned, Ross! I really agree with #9. It's so easy to get caught up in trying to get somewhere in your "online career" that you end up putting it before more important things like family....and family was suppose to be the reason you were wanting to work from home to begin with. When you lose that time with them, you can't ever get that time back....No, time lost cannot be regained. Put off the computer work for later! Set some specific work hours, and let the rest be for living life!

    17. P A R T I C I P A T E ! - I can't stress this enough. The Warrior Forum is an amzing community, but you will only get the most from it by participating in it. It's the magic key that unlocks everything here.

    18. Treat everyone here with respect, but work to earn theirs. It is possible for somebody to lose your respect, but operate on the starting assumption that they are worthy of it. However, do not assume that anybody owes you respect and work hard to earn it.

    19. Develop your tact muscles. (This is related to #18) You can disagree with people, you can tell them unpleasant things, and you may even get angry with them, but be tactful about it. Remember, it's not what you say, it'show you say it.

    20. Don't be afraid to apologize, admit you were wrong, or that you don't understand something. Self-explanatory.

Some very good points, though I see your point #3 differently. The amount of information that is out there and all the opportunities that are here that weren't even available 5-10 years ago, it's actually EASIER to make money today.

The fact that most people don't succeed at ANY business isn't going to change for a very long time (if ever) since most people aren't willing to pay the price and put the work that's necessary to build a real business. All those distractions are just an excuse for most.

But the fact remains that the opportunities out there abound and with so many others who have trailblazed for the rest of us, it's actually easier to make money online today than ever before.

Thanks for the input Rod. I think people are just getting much less receptive in general. They're opening emails less due to the number of emails they're receiving... and staying on websites for literally seconds making the punch you pack have to be extremely strong. There are SO many products out there, a huge amount of which aren't money worthy, making people sceptical to buy after having been burnt so many times. And in our IM world, beginners are under the assumption $2 articles on their money site is going to end up making them rich.

      Just some thoughts!

    23. Embrace Change Because Nothing Lasts Forever
You have to adapt fast and embrace change. Nothing lasts for ever in this business and change is the only constant. Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. You should be constantly testing and trying new things. But most important: Just remember nothing lasts which is why no matter what you're doing, build a list. I started list building really late, but it has saved my @$$ countless times when sites lost rankings in Google and/or profitable campaigns dried up.

    24. Don't Be Complacent
When you have that first break through campaign don't settle or get complacent. You're either growing or dying.

    25. The First Thing You Should Do Is Get Total Clarity On What You Want.

To the OP's point of there being too many products out there this can cause information overload. One way to combat this is to get total clarify on what you want. Then focus in on the "how".

So let's say you decide to you want to send PPC traffic from Bing and Facebook to Clickbank and CPA offers, well, then there's no need to buy that new WP plug in because your business does NOT need it at this time. Nor do you need that new niche-finding software because you've already found a niche, etc. etc. etc.........

This is not an easy step, granted, but putting some thought and mental aerobics into this will be well worth it in the long run.......

    26. Internet marketing is WIRED (a) - You can do just about everything from the comfort of your home (or any place with a connection). More and more sites are integrating with one another, and this technological phenomenon can be used to your advantage. Yes, you should work smarter AND harder, but today's technology makes the "smarter" part much easier.

    27. Internet marketing is WIRED (b) - Even though everything seems wired together, it's vital that you make contact with real people. That's one of the cool things about the WF; it gives you a chance to interact and maintain a human connection.

    Happy 1-Year Ross!

"One thing"?? I was nodding throughout the entire post, lol.It takes someone who has persevered and learnt tremendously through through failures to reach your level of insight. That's really cool.

I'm really new here, but hope your next year on the forum would be even more beneficial for you. All the best!

    Cheers~

A lot of beginners are being guided in a billion directions... most of which are bound for failure... but eventually they'll catch on. Hopefully. And it's true that the majority never make anything. A lot of people make a small amount of money, but you've gotta be something truly special to make the BIG bucks. It doesn't happen overnight no matter how great your product or service is. It's a process. It could take over a year - EASY!
These two points basically sum up why I'm an active user on this here Warrior Forum

The fact that Google traffic and other traditional list building channels are getting more and more expensive makes Warrior Forum list building really attractive. I mean, $40 for a WSO and then you can promote that WSO for free in your signature file forever. Great deal, right? Plus, once you've got that list built, you can then publish your sales page here on the forum first before you take it to Clickbank or wherever.

Basically I think using Warrior Forum is a really effective hedge against the increasing expense and difficulty of building up a business outside the forum. But, of course, the key is not to get stuck in the rut of just running a "Warrior Forum business" while not doing squat outside. Ultimately, most of the really high paying customers and clients lie elsewhere.

Excellent post, thank you very much!

I think you're right about everything you write, because I have tried everything myself, except launching a WSO. But I will do someday, if i get enough social proof...

Congrats on your one year anniversary.

    Well done

#28 - If you are low on funding and aren't able to afford high start-up costs, offer a service.

There's probably no better way to start in Internet marketing than offering your own service. Chances are you can't offer anything along the lines of sales page writing, SEO, etc., if you're a newbie, but if you're a good writer, there's a start! Think about what YOU can do well, and when I say well, I mean VERY well. People don't like mediocre anymore. They can find that over on oDesk and Elance for $2 an hour. Start at a low price (think "review copies") and once building a reputation, slowly start upping your prices or offering more "advanced" services. Plus, starting a Warriors For Hire thread will only cost $20!A measly cost for what can come of it.

    Internet marketing is WEIRD.
I couldn't agree more. It's also crazy (gives you sleepless nights figuring out how to become a millionaire one day) and challenging (you get pissed when others make tons of money and you don't). Internet marketing can be very cruel -- if you don't know how to get your way around it. But then, it can be a pot of gold - if you know where and how to dig.

It's true, the money IS in the list.
No better way to build your credibility and brand than to connect with as many people as you can. No man is an island.

Making money online is becoming harder and harder.
The global population is getting bigger while the world is getting smaller. The more the merrier? It really depends.

The Warriorforum really has a lot of buyers.
    It's where it all happens!

If you're planning to earn your full-time income online, don't quit your job right away.
Amen to that! Was about to call it quits with my boring day job because my online business really picking up. Then one day... pfft! Fortunately, after a few days, I was back. Thank God things are looking good with my online clients. Hope it stays this way for a long time. Will I give up my day job? I don't think so.

Put your loved ones before your online career.
    Amen to that again!

    Thanks a lot & Happy 1-Year Ross!

The closest I can get is $101.

        (Age 22 x 5 letters in surname) - 1 year = 101

It was from your point #6 I just was curious as to if it's normal for someone in IM to only make 100 bucks in a year.

        6. If you're planning to earn your full-time income online, don't quit your job right away. Like I said above... making money online can take a year. It can take longer... even a couple years. You might earn $100 bucks the first year

Oh, now I understand. No, I make more than $100 per year - the statement wasn't related to my own experience. It's just that some of the best Internet marketers out there making 7 figures a year now, when they first started, failed... as in, made $100 in that first year. And they didn't get discouraged... this fought back... and now are waking up every morning with paychecks bigger than some Americans make in a year. I hope you make those 7 digits in your first year online, but as you've probably came to realize, it's not an overnight process.

The closest I got was taking the "1" from "1 year anniversary" and moving it over to "$100 per year". Your guess is as good as mine. Haha.

    Nice post Ross.

I recently joined but I've been reading these forums for awhile. The quality of the offers and services can be hit or miss. However, there's no denying there are many members here who know their stuff and provide great tools and resources at an insane value. I think it's quite special how many members here share their strengths/services to help each other prosper. This has been my favorite aspect about this place so far.

In regards to my personal online business ventures, I've applied many of the principles I've read here. Some have worked, some haven't. As all experienced business folks know, it's simply a matter of trial and error.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Personally, I don't know that I'd ever quit my day job even if I start making six figures online. I'm currently generating decent revenue online through a variety of ventures, but my day job is just too good to let go of. It's an 8-10 hour per day office job, but I never feel like I'm working. I'm an expert in my field, and I love the people I work with. Making money online is just the icing on the cake.

Awesome post, I do agree with the OP that is all about list building and building a great relationship with your list. Many newbies rely on Google traffic, when you should build a solid business. Thanks for sharing your experience.

JayParker, look out for your twin, Jason Parker!

And I wouldn't say it's all about building your list. A product owner could make a great deal from his products... his affiliates... even with his list on the back burner. It could simply be used to aware previous buyers of new products. Or someone that provides a service might have no list at all and make a lot of money every month. There is money in list building, but there is also plenty for the taking in many other business models as well.
