Does a redirected domain get indexed?

If you redirect domain1.com to domain2.com does domain1.com get indexed by Google? If so, how long does it usually take?

  If I can't get it indexed what are the best ways to promote the domain? The domain for the website it redirects to is too hard to remember.

  if it's a html redirect and not a 301 redirect.. YES...
  
  i've had one in search for years.... it actually gets me affiliate commissions.. i dont even own the site anymore

  I use the cloaked forwarding on domainmonster for some affiliate URLs. They give you the options to enter your meta title, description, and keywords. You will get indexed but if you're looking for lots of traffic don't count on it. I received a couple of hits on these domains but really only use the cloaked forwarding feature for PPC advertising.
  
  Search engines know that these sites are just forwarded copies so they won't rank you highly.
  
  As others stated, if you issue a 301 redirect search engines will not index the URL.

These are all good responses but I think the question to ask is WHY

Why are you redirecting domain1.com to domain2.com especially if domain1 has the better name?

  I'll attempt to clarify what I mean. There's a forum being hosted by one of these free forum hosting sites, so I can't move the forum to the better domain.
  
  I got the better domain through namecheap but I can't tell if it's html or 303 forwarding. Any ideas?

I've had a redirect in place for about 8 years for one of my domains and I can confirm that Google lists the domain with the redirection and not the redirected domain.
