[PLR] & Resell Rights - Know YOUR Rights

I just posted some new content to my blog about PLR and resell rights in general. Thought it might clear up some of the confusion around the issue - so here you go!

Explanation Of Resell Rights
There is a wealth of material available on the web that you can download and use for your own purposes - but just MAKE SURE you know what you are allowed to do with it!

To help you out and keep you on the right track - here is a handy summary:

Giveaway Rights
You are free to pass on the item, for example an ebook or software at no cost to anyone else . Sometimes you're not even allowed to sell it. You can usually find this stated at the beginning of ebooks or somewhere in the software file.

Normally, in this case, the author is more interested in getting exposure, making a name for themselves, perhaps getting their product viral or building a list if they are using giveaway rights. Often, giveaway rights products are lead generators for their other paid products and services.

Giveaway rights are useful but only if the content is of good quality and helps the end user.

Resell Rights
Generally, you are free to sell these products at a suggested resale price. Resell rights products are normally royalty free including digital resell rights, so you can keep all the money for yourself.

Often, good ones come with pre-written sales pages, images of the product and even thank you pages. Be careful - some countries such as the US & the UK have price fixing laws. This is why licenses will say "Suggested Retail Price" in most cases. Make sure to read the terms and conditions set by the author(s).

Now & again, you'll come across a product with resell rights that has a few other limitations, for example a required minimum retail price or certain things you aren't allowed to do, maybe bundling them or giving them away free without permission. Always follow these terms out of respect for the author you bought the rights from.

Subject to the terms, you can sometimes give them to your customers or members if they paid for something else, such as another product or membership fee for example.

The biggest difference between resell rights and master resell rights is that with just resell rights you cannot sell the rights to others - you can just sell the product and you must host the webpage yourself.

Master Resell Rights
When you have the master resell rights to a product (depending on the terms), you could give it away, resell it, bundle it, create new information packages from it or include it in your own membership sites.

Additionally, you can even pass on or sell the resell rights to others, meaning that when you sell that product to someone, they can in turn sell it to someone else.
Master resell rights normally cost more (but you can charge more when you sell the product) and they give the licensed owner more control.

Master resell rights normally vary somewhat depending on the product creator. It is important to understand the difference between NON TRANSFERABLE Master Resell rights and TRANSFERABLE Master Resell Rights.

Non Transferable means exactly what it says - you cannot give/sell those rights to anyone - only you have those rights so they are more exclusive and therefore, usually more expensive. Transferable means you can pass on or sell the rights to others.

Private Label Rights (PLR) & Source Code Rights
Now, these rights you can really do something with! Normally, you get the source files to a product and you can create a new product from it and call it your own.

You can edit the content, add to it, remove certain portions, create new images, revamp the sales page and literally repackage the entire product. You are even allowed to use the text content to create a niche website theme, online e-course, or break a large file into mini reports if you want. You can then take the product you redid and give it away, resell it, bundle it, create new information packages or include them in your own membership sites.

In fact, you can do whatever you like within the license terms you have been given! Usually, you can even sell the resell rights to others. That is, unless it is stated otherwise in the private label rights you are granted. You could sell that product along with the resell rights for a higher price -- and that then allows your customer to sell it to someone else.

Private label rights are usually the most expensive form of rights to buy, but you get the most flexibility in what you do with the product with full editing control and the ability to create new products from the source files.

Non Transferable Private Label Rights
Generally, these have the same rights as the private label rights detailed above but you cannot sell the private label rights, only the product itself or otherwise use the content to create new products.

Often private label rights and source code rights are used together. Normally, PLR is used for text content while source code is used for software programs.
