Steps in Buying Registered Domain

How do you go about buying a domain from someone, what controls are there for passing of ownership?

Is it controlled through register.com (or who they registered it through)?

Thanks in advance.

There are a number of ways to try to buy a domain. You can visit whois.net and see if any details are available to the doamin owner then contact them. If they have privacy controls on you'll need to contact the domains host and hope they pass on the message. Alternatively you can use a domain broker to do all the leg work for you and try and get the domain. Many of the big domain registration companies offer this service or there are a few individual domain brokers that can help you.
If you work a deal the present owner can just push (transfer) the domain to your account. It's normally free if you use the same domain registration comapny but can incur a fee to transfer from on domain registration comapny to another. I'd also suggest using escrow.com for secure payment.

I have the owners email, so contacting them is no problem. I'm just worried or wondering the process once an amount is agreed upon.

If you both agree to use escrow then you pay the agreed amount to them...they hold the money..the domain is transfered after the domain holder sees the money is waiting...you confirm transfer..money is released by the chosen method. Really is straight forward.

If it's a big ticket domain, like 4 figures and up, I use www.Escrow.com for transactions. Makes everyone feel much more comfortable about the transaction.

I agree with voasi escrow.com gets my vote. Used them a few times to sell domains and sites and never had an issue.

You can use SEDO , they charge 10% but you get nice protection for the transaction.

If I had a big sale that is who I would probably use.
