what makes more money?

hi
everyone on here seems to be talking about how to make money from there blogs however i was wondering do forums still make money or are they outdated way to make money now?

my dilema is, i have a few ideas for sites and would love to try in time to make money from a site however im worried that if i have a blog would i need to be an expert in the chosen area , where as with a forum you can hopefully keep the content fresh by having lots of different topics?

    I don't think forums are out-dated,
I think it is a matter of finding the
ones where the people in your chosen niche hang out..

For example the Warrior Forum has a ton of traffic
    and a ton of opportunities..

Forum is still good, not any outdated one. You can earn earn money with that only if you know, how to earn. Try to find out the proper way to capitalize your forum. Best of luck!

You dont have to be an expert, but that's why the better idea would be to pick a niche that you like, and have interest in, you dont want to spend a lot of time promoting , writing and learning something that you have no interest in.

Create your own blog in an area your interested in and get people to sign up for your newsletter. It can be fun and if you are knowledgeable about something that most others are not people will come in droves to read it. At the end of the day if it doesn't work out you have a nice body of work you can use in future ventures.

If you want it to be a business, rather than a hobby, you need to have (or to develop) interests in areas which are good for monetization.

Maybe they're just better at looking as if they make money from blogging about that and promoting it? I strongly suspect that many of the people I see involved in that kind of niche are only bluffing, while most of those I know to be earning a good living aren't involved in any "IM advice" or "Make Money Online" niches at all.

I have the exact same experience as Alexa.

Don't get stuck in the "closed loop" of the Make Money Online niche. Sure, there is a lot of money and hungry buyers in this niche, but there is A LOT more money out there in the "real world".

In regards to a forum I would personally never start one.

            Why?

            1. It's tough to get one off the ground. You need a lot of quality members posting regularly in your forum to attract new members.

            2. I think, (don't know for sure since I never ran a forum), that its really hard to create an atmosphere where people want to post valuable stuff. I have been "lurking" on several large forums for a decade or more and almost never contributed anything of value. Why? I have just never felt "part of the community" in most places, and always wondered why anyone would really care what I have to say. Part of a recent promise to myself is to change my ways and to start to contribute, but I think its really important to develop the right atmosphere in a forum...

            3. The spammers of the world are getting more and more sophisticated. If your forum becomes popular every day will be like an arms race with you against the spammers.

Personally I like business ideas that are kind of "build it and forget it" and that will continue to bring in residual income for years. Forums don't fall into that category.

thanks for your input, that is the one thing that puts me off a forum is the spammers , also if no one contributes could be disasterous, there are pros and cons for both i suppose

the how to make money online niche is one that interests me alot i have to admit even though i do not make money online

Same here, with the difference that I do make a lot of money online, although not from this niche. I keep seeing all these people with no real track record make good money in the MMO niche. Makes me think that I just might have to dip my toe in it at some point!

I know from experience that niche selection is crucially important. I think the MMO niche has a lot of great things going for it, although I do think you are more likely to succeed if you have some actual experience from making money online! Surprise surprise!

Here are some other niches for you to consider that have made me a lot of money over the years, (high 6-figures to 7-figures):

                - Personal loans (seems to be moving away from "secured" and more into short-term loans.)

                - Insurance (health is great but so is car and many other insurance types)

                - Debt consolidation and/or "elimination" ("IVA" in the UK market is good)

                - Health (diet pills and supplements work well, but it needs to be high quality products)

                - Online casinos/Sportbooks (a lot of pitfalls here but can be very profitable. You need to do proper research to make sure you only promote quality operators, or you will lose all credibility)

Sorry if I deviated from the forum topic. I just wanted to give you some more ideas to think about outside the MMO niche!

It depends on the niche. Some are growing and some have lost members.

For example, many Real Estate boards that have been around for years were HOT during the RE boom, but are now ghost towns, so to speak, due to the crash.

Markets are cyclical so supply and demand shifts accordingly.

The thing that makes more money is whichever you are better at developing. If you suck at making blogs but are great at creating communities that people love to visit and participate in, your forum could make you a lot of money.

However, if you suck at making forums and are terrible at stitching communities together, then your forum would never make it and blogs might be the better choice to master.

It all depends on your abilities and what you want for yourself.

      Best,
      -Mike

Depending on the forum topic and how much traffic you get, how well you optimize the site and so on forums can be one of THE most profitable businesses out there! That said, they can be very taxing on system resources (aside from bw and space) so be aware of that. VPS hosting is much better and VBulletin from the start is a good investment.

Amazon will pay off well on a forum with the right topic / content and you can offer premium memberships with additional features as well. That said, forums are hard to build. I have built forums with 30k+ members but if you can't drive the traffic there quickly from the start or the forum looks dead to new members you will have a difficult time and a long road ahead. I would suggest building a site up without a forum and getting a ton of traffic first. After that open the forum but keep the forum closed from non members to get sign ups. Go from there.

One thing you should be aware of is that it's NOT EASY to get the initial momentum going when you first start a forum.

If someone visits your forum and it's a ghost town with only a few posts then they are likely to think the forum is dead and not post themselves.

If you do start a forum you'll need to figure out how to get some activity in the forum right away so when someone first arrives the forum is filled with content (instead of them being expected to make a post to an empty forum).

I own a forum with 30k posts and about 1k registered members that are mostly all active. Forums are VERY difficult to get rolling, especially if there are a lot of competitors and already established sites.

I make a reasonable amount of money (not near enough to quit your job) off of my forum but you have to use more than just Adsense as forums have a VERY low CTR.

Maybe you should test you ideas, and see if they are easy to monetise. Are people paying for PPC in your chosen areas - monitor it over time to see if the same advertisers are always there. If so they must be making money from those keywords - IMPORTANT -> Not all the time because most people don't track what is working

You can do a PPC campaign.

You say you want to earn money from it, so think about what products, who would be interested to advertise their products or services. Look at the CPC in Google - if low maybe not that great a niche...

Forums can be a great way to get traffic to your site. Once it becomes popular and has regular users on a daily basis... i'm sure that your adsense/clickbank/your own product will sell.

Blogging is easy. The key is rightful placement of your ads and products so that you can improve the chances of having people click on them. Both can make you alot of money.

Forums are not out-dated and you can make money with them. You also don't need to be an expert to run a blog. You can hire writers that will do the research and provide you with expert content for your blog. Both can make quite a bit of money and the combination is a very powerful thing.

    Guys,

I have learnt a little from my experience so far !!!

The more traffic or viral effect you can create through your website, the more income opportunities or you can say the more ideas you can generate for income / money making through your blog or site.

Marketers do go with Blogs these days since they are too dynamic & allow you to create your own customized themes / plugins which can result in desired results when you invest money & time in proper format.

Even forums arent a bad deal

I have done both and while it is true that the forum will take work, it can also take a life of its own once it hits puberty. The beginning is the toughest part because you have to nurture it, but later on it will pay off.

Just remember, why would people come to your forum?

If there is a good enough reason, they will keep coming back (HINT: great content = loyal members).

Forums are actually not outdated. The appropriate term may be "saturated". Its just that many people (entrepreneurs) are already using it and they're using it quite well.

Innovate! Learn to use old things in new ways.

Also, you don't need to be THE expert in a certain area. All you have do (if your not an expert enough) is to be a host to persons who are.

Forums are great to build a community around your niche, it can take time. My best recommendation for making a great income is building a list of subscribers on your niche, then build a relationship with them. After building that trust, provide them with recommendations of products you think would be useful to them, you make a profit in each sale.

I own a vBulletin site (the last one I'll ever have - Wordpress junkie now) I've been operating for close to 10 years. The forum was originally setup as a place to congregrate and discuss a certain niche. I didn't make any money with it (nor did I previously try to monetize it) until I customized the entire theme earlier this year and added a CMS homepage (vBCMS). It's amazing what a redesign will do for a site. That first month I received a ton of solicitations seeking quotes for various ad types on the CMS homepage. I was able to quickly earn back what I spent on the customization. Solicitations have slowed down lately, but I still get 1-2 ad solid leads per month. It's a great feeling when you begin making $125-$500 for simply posting a guest post advertising a product/service or through running a 6-12 month campaign ad on the sidebar.

In summary, the redesign has worked wonders as it now provides my content with a much more professional appearance. When I don't have time, I outsource articles, although it's often difficult to find quality writers for that site's niche. Not many people are experts in that area.

The moral of my story is that one can still make money with certain forum software.
