I wouldn't go and say that about all seo pros. Just because one, or some do this -- doesn't mean all do it. He may have the fake-it till you make-it syndrome as well.

I'm not saying one way or the other if this person is qualified to perform based on their offer because I personally don't know anything about them.

It is possible for people to be totally proficient and competent in most areas and only lacking in some new techniques and technology and then seeking out knowledge about those areas.

Also, one could learn a new trick and turn around and sell that one trick.

Someone could come in here and ask a lot of questions about autoresponders and that person would appear to be a total neophyte that you would not want teaching you about how to make money but then he could turn out to be Warren Buffet.

If I witnessed what you are describing, yes I too would be hesitant to believe their claims but it depends on what those were.

If I didn't know anything about installing Wordpress at least that person who had just learned the process could now teach me.

      jhn2001,

Agreed! A lot of experienced people ask probing questions to guage a market.

I generally try not to underestimate anything in this industry. SEO is a process like any other. If the person in question offered a WSO and doesn't know squat about SEO - he will generally receive negative comments. He/she will also get refund requests.

If you happen to follow-up on this, I would be interested in knowing what type comments were left.

Whenever I think about integrity I think about someone who's probably got more of it than anyone I ever met. I think he fell in a bucketload of it at birth. He did SEO for a living (probably still does - I haven't seen him around for a while) and was one of the best at it too. SEO is no more full of pretenders than any other field of online expertise - they've all got their fair share.

You do have to watch points whichever services you're thinking of purchasing. In some ways the pretenders have it easy because it's simple enough to hide behind a screen and spout bull, in other ways not so much, because they'll soon get caught out and will never be able to build themselves a lasting business built on a good reputation. You have to be duly diligent, but painting everyone as a liar makes no more sense than unconditionally believing everyone.

Why do so many people think SEO is some kind of mystery that takes years to learn?

SEO can be learned in less than a day.
The hard part of SEO is the time it takes to build links.

Why is it unrealistic for this guy to learn SEO and start a service in a week?

Anyone here can do the same.

True. SEO isn't that complicated at all. Personally though I wouldn't want to purchase a SEO product from someone who's only been practicing it for a week because they don't have the wisdom which comes from experience. A person can learn most of the important moves in a martial art in a couple of days but I wouldn't pay to learn from them because they don't have the experience to teach another person and they haven't mastered all of the moves themselves.

Some people, too, have years of experience but no wisdom.

You might have someone who has done SEO for years, but much of his experience was through haphazard efforts. Some things he does he only does because he thinks they work, but that might not necessarily be the case. He could be putting a lot of effort into things that provide little or no return, while spending a little time on things that are bringing in a good return. So, he might have experience, but not necessarily any wisdom.

Meanwhile, someone else could spend a solid weekend learning SEO from quality sources. He might learn the right things to do, the things that work, and not waste time on the things that don't work or don't work well.

Who would you rather learn from?

Bear in mind, too, that the person who has been doing SEO for years might not have kept up with most recent developments. So, he might still be doing things that worked in the past, but don't work as well now. Whereas someone who just learned SEO won't have that baggage.

Of course, in general, the person who has been at it for years will be better qualified than the person who just learned. But that's also something that needs to be looked at on a case by case basis.

Actually it's much more likely that a person new to SEO will be using out-of-date advice and then selling or teaching it to people. Why? Simply because there's bad advice all over the Internet--including this forum (I see it almost every day).

They have to have spent a good amount of time in the industry to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff and they have to have been practicing SEO for some time to know what they're doing.

And even more so if they're teaching it to people. Usually people that have been into SEO for a long time keep up with the latest developments and know the best and most reliable sources for information.

Let's not kid ourselves: If a person is a complete beginner at something and they're posing as an expert and charging the same prices as experienced people then it's just bad business and extremely misleading.

seo can be mimicked in a day, but it takes a bit longer to learn proper seo techniques. There is no hard and fast one way to do seo, and the landscape of seo is constantly changing due to various reasons. Someone who mimics seo wont know that. They will be the guys who still do things that were done a year or so ago in the field, even if its not relevant.

This is my take on the instant gurus and guys who start up seo consulting like 10 minutes after they first find digitalpoint or wf

I think you can probably learn enough to give people a solid foundation on the basics, but not necessarily be someone to train others or provide a decent service

The thing about SEO is that it DOES change so much and so fast, and there are so many new people that jump into it every day, that anyone that's made 50 cents off adwords can pass themselves off as an seo master or guru.

That doesnt mean they can teach you anything, that means they are smart enough to know you are looking for the same stuff they were last week, and they are clever enough to know they can use that to do things like sell the same crap affiliate products they themselves bought when they were in your position...just as the person that first stuck them did when THEY entered IM.

In the time i've been around IM and SEO in general, I've found that the people who are truly making a lot of money, arent going to tell you how they are doing it. I mean seriously think about that for a minute. Let's say that tomorrow morning you get an AHA! idea for your sites/IM endeavors that will suddenly have you making 2-3k a month and you know without a doubt this will work. Or you have legitimately put in a couple months/years work to perfect a system that will do that. Are you going to go directly to your computer and throw out a 9.95 WSO on this, or a $29.99 clickbank offer? Yeah, that would be smart wouldnt it, to flood your 2-3k a month niche with 2000 people doing the same thing.

No you probably wouldnt do that. So if you wouldnt do it, what makes you thing that the 'guru' in a picture on a website with a fake background of a mansion in miami and a new ferrari under his butt would do the same thing?

But for argument's sake, lets say that the guy is legitimate, do you think a guy like that would be well known around the net? Hell yes he would. There would be blog posts, wf posts, webmaster forum posts about this guy by the 1000's. So if you did a search for his name and you start seeing posts of 'check this guy out, he made bazillions and here's how' he may be legit. But when you look for the latest 'guru' and his deep discounted offer to help you retire next year (I'm hoping that you do a little background on anything on the net before you break out your bank card) and you dont find a thing anywhere on this guy, wouldnt you think that a little odd?

2 things that keeps SEO going are people's unbridled greed and unending gullibility. Couple that with the long standing mantra of many in IM of 'Fake It Till You Make It' and its not hard to see how some become a guru, how many become disenchanted with IM and how many more get suckered into spending their hard earned cash with someone that has probably been doing this a whole week or 2 before they themselves decided they were a guru.

Well first off I can't knock the guy unless I know what he's promising. If he's promising to get you on google's first page in 2 weeks then he's obviously full of it.

If he's simply offering to create 100 backlinks for X amount of dollars, what is wrong with that. I can teach a 7 yr old how to create backlinks in 15 minutes.

If you read just 1 hour a day on any topic...after a year you will be in top 1% of people in the world for that topic

So am sure if you study SEO properly for a week you are probably in the top 15% in the world of all people in terms of your knowledge there.

Whether you want to hire someone like that I guess depends on your own knowledge and what you want

      @hotlinkz

He was offering few link building services which seemed okay to me but he had another package where he talked a lot about on-page optimisation and stuff .Even on-page aint hard but still i found it really shocking . i will always prefer an experienced guy over a newbie .Newbies generally tend to promise a lot and they endup nowhere .I did not wanted to ruin his thread so i preferred not to comment in his sales thread .

I jsut can't make up my mind about this. One part agrees with the "Look, you can get the key points in a week" because I get fed up with clients who have been ripped off by SEO companies who never deliver and won't guarantee (OK, I accept that last bit).

But then there's the part which someone above has mentioned - the art and practice that takes time (like anything).

I think I'm veering towards the latter - which is why I don't offer it!

Of course you need to look at the cost too.

I mean if the guy just learned how to install Wordpress and you didn't know a thing about it and he was charging $10 you might be willing to buy.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who would love to have a top rated marketer like Jay Abraham give them personal consulting but are willing to pay less for someone who is not as knowledgeable purely out of financial necessity.

I have no interest in paying the World's Greatest Magician a few thousand dollars to learn sleight of hand but I bought a lot beers to learn some bar tricks.

no one know's how great your product and customer service is until:

      a) they find your site
      b) they have been convinced to buy from you

Of course happy customers ARE great for a business - but they have to be customers first. It doesn't matter how awesome your product is if you can't get it in front of your market.

Example: I handle internet marketing for a car dealership... I can say that SEO is responsible for a huge portion of their sales. This dealership had the one of the highest custmer service ratings in the state, yet hardly anyone in their market had even heard of them since they were "off the beaten path". Within a year of decent SEO (and using ppc until the SEO kicked in), their sales doubled.

With SEO, you cant see a immediate permanent result that fast.. so how in the blue hell does the fella know what he is doing is right, and works, before he preaches it to others .. lol..

This is like some of the IM seminar ads that i see in the local paper. they are either a nobody, or just someone who is a beginner. Pathetic.

i was a speaker last year at a SEO/SEM conference and been in this game many years - i have never used wordpress in my life and probably wont, i much prefer joomla. But should the day come and i try and use wordpress please dont strip me of my knowledge and credibility if i ask for help! LOL

and for crying out loud SEO is not just about backlinking you would be very naive if your only SEO outlook was to simply build a campaign on backlinks over and over again.... i cant wait to see google change there algorhythms!

there will be a lot of dissapointed people if they do!
