Buying competitors similar domain name

Hello all,

I would like to ask: my competitor has domain name "business-name.com". I'd like to buy the domain "business-name.net".

What is the situation with this? They haven't registered the domain name and I'd like to buy it and make use of it.

Thanks

Depends on how big 'business-name' is. If it's a small-time business (like one of us), probably not a problem.

If 'business-name' happens to be Walmart, you would have a problem. But then, most big businesses buy up all the "business-name.net", "business-name.org", etc. domain names and redirect them to their .com, so you wouldn't find those available anyway.

If it's not a well-known trademark, probably not a problem... ie: I used to own "cjreynolds.com" and used it for business. Other people had "cjreynolds.net" and "cjreynolds.org" - nothing I could do about it, unless I were to trademark "cjreynolds".

If the .com is not trademarked also isn't a good idea because the .com will remains domainat and maybe you will help them, maybe when a visitor of yours try to return at your site type with .com and go your competitor's site

Personally, I don't like .net extention for affiliate sites

Definitely an issue - nobody remembers the TLD when they hear it - they just hear ".com" no matter what you tell them.

What if your competitor is Something., and you go get www.SomethingReview.com? Would a business care that you are promoting that site just to siphon traffic away from them to you? What do you think?

Well, as said before in the thread, it depends on if that rival has trademarked the domain name, if not then you are fine.

And the chances are that if the domain had a trademark, then the .net or other extensions wouldn't be avaliable.

I used to do that a long time ago, I would find a good selling product and try to get the .info or .net domain name that went with that product.

I never did very well with those, and like someone mentioned earlier, people only think of .com no matter what you tell them.
