Can badminton make you a better marketer?

This was brought about by that thread about branding and politics.

When I was at school we had this sports competition where we played other schools at certain sports. One of them was badminton. I ended up playing this girl who I thought I would destroy. After all, I was a lot bigger, faster and stronger than her. I knew she played for her country, so I thought it would be a good game but still...

She absolutely destroyed me. Something like 15-4 and that was me being lucky. Do you know why she beat me?

She could play 5 moves in front. She knew exactly where the shuttlecock was going to be after 5 moves and she could send me wherever she wanted.

It's the same in pool (or do you call it billiards) when you want to win. If you're good you can read the game and know what is going to happen many shots ahead.

Are we being naive only playing the shots that are directly in front of us? Should be be looking to the future and playing 5 shots in front?

What do you think?

I think that just like sports marketing is all about building skill sets and having a gameplan. I like your analogy. A professional basketball player usually starts playing as a kid. So when you see a 18 year old professional they usually have 10 years of experience. People who practice and use skillsets year after year will become masters at their craft. If you study and play the game day after day you will be able to be the .1% at what you do. Most marketers in the 97% struggling rate do not dedicate themselves in full to become a master at marketing. Master traffic and conversion and you will be able to make money as if you are printing it. The secret inside of every success story is a person who is mastering their craft and has a never give up mentality.
