Selling Domain Names for Profit?

Hey guys,

Been lurking the forums here and there picking up wonderful advice but this is my first official post.

Lately, I have been buying up quite a few attractive domain names that I see having a lucrative future. I posted most of them on Sedo but have not had any luck..

My question is:

1. Is selling domain names, with no content, a feasible market and how competitive is it?

2. Is the $29 listing fee on Flippa worth the exposure it receives compared to a contingent based Sedo?

3. Would building a content based niche website and possibly selling it or generating revenue through advertisement outweigh buying and reselling blank slate domain names??

Any other advice or tips from you pros out there is highly and warmly welcomed!

I'd go with Sedo and Afternic for domains only. I'd only use Flippa if I'd developed a site on it to get some traffic and revenue. There are domains that will sell with no site. If the domain is strong enough to stand on it's own, try Sedo, Afternic and Godaddy auctions.

Getting traffic and revenue makes selling them a no-brainer though. Buyers on Flippa buy producing sites up pretty quickly and for good prices.

yeah only use flippa if you have a good alexa rank and have good amounts of traffic pouring to your sites daily.

You will get good price from Flippa if you have some revenue from your sites.

Because this has been very popular for many years, all the popular domain names are already gone. So anything that is still available is something that people have not wanted.

So the only way to make the domain valuable would be to build content on it and start getting traffic to it. At this point you can sell the entire website instead of just the domain.

Its a solid business for the very experienced, I've tried domain flipping a few times.......evry time has been an epic fail!........however some people do very well, but its one of those areas you have to be well ahead of the game and know what you are doing!

I suppose it depends whether the domain name has links associated with it and also how much in demand that name has.

Sorry to say this, but I have a feeling that you are not expirienced in domaining, so I would suggest to avoid paying listing fee at Flippa for your domain(s) as they probably are not of high quality and you will not sell them there.

Trading with domain names could be very profitable business, but only for expirienced.

    Thanks for the answers guys,

The general census is that buying/selling domain names is very profitable for ONLY those selected experienced sellers.

How does one go about becoming such a seller?

      With experience

Just to confirm that it is not necessary to sell .com to make profit; about an hour ago I sold .biz domain which I regged for $6 I think, few weeks ago. Sale price was $120, I contacted him and he dont look like end-user. I am sure that this domain could achieve high $xxx to low $x.xxx but I wanted to sell it and take smaller profit as am busy with selling some other domains.

Yesterday I had one much better sale, but will not write about it and my intention is to show that it is possible to make money from domaining.

The most important is to pick the right domain and that you in advance know who would might be interested to buy it at higher price.

Another is to sell domains with good backlinks and pagerank.
I developped a script that predict pagerank of an expired domain, have a look here :

    this case test is running...

It's tough to sell domains. It's better to stick with them and ride it out.

Domain flipping is a great business but you need to be proactive about it. Sedo is a good place to list your domains for sale but don't expect them to sell quickly.

I have had the best success by contacting small businesses that may be interested in a domain that I'm trying to sell. It's not easy and takes time and effort but you can make good money with patience and persistence.

You will find plenty of info around on selling domains to end users with a google search.

      Best of luck!

Speculative investment, you should view it more as a side income. The days of finding valuable domain names that are still available to register is long over. That said, there would still be a ton of opportunities buying domains and reselling them for profit, but it's require a lot of effort and experience in a defined market.

Not much or impressive response so far. Why? This is an internet marketing forum. There are forums dedicated to domain flipping only and your best bet would be to go over to namepros.com . It's not easy to sell domain name by hand registering them except that you have a list of people that have bought from you in the past. Like someone else said, you have to be proactive. Watch out for words that will buzz for a long time. For instance. Cloud was once the buzz word and people register the good names like icloud.com, cloudserver.com, cloudhosting.com, cloudwebhosting, cloudengineer.com, etc. 3D was also not left out and we had 3dchannel, 3dporn, etc but you get the drift? Stick with .net and .com.

Also use google keyword tool to search for good keyword. Don't just register anyname that seem very fancy to you.

Or better, instead of hand registering names, which you may not find a buyer for and because most good names are taken, goto auction site like godaddy and you may find good names for dirt cheap. A friend whom gave me this advice did find a very good 3d name which he bought for a few hundred dollars and do you know how much some companies are willing to pay him for that name? Morer than $5000. But he doesn't want to sell just yet. I didn't all I have shared here a few months ago and I ended up register useless names.
    Good luck!
