Am I gonna get in trouble by mailing from GroupMail to a list that has not opted in via my optin form? Is it best to use only a service like aWeber or GetResponse that will only mail to a double optin list? I'm a little confused about how to get started.

I don't know what GroupMail is, but you can very easily get into trouble by sending bulk unsolicited email, yes. If people "report spam", your internet connection can be in jeopardy. Or worse.

Both those services (and many of their competitors) will also let you mail to single opt-in lists. As long as they're your lists.

You should check out the Can Spam Act. By sending emails to people who did not opt-in is spam and it is illegal.

Although list building is time consuming you are going to find that it is the safest way to proceed and also the right way to proceed.

If you actually read the can spam act and the FTC guidelines you'll see that optin is not part of the law. That's a "old wives" tale that was created by email marketers and email marketing services specifically and deliberately to sell monthly subscriptions.

That's also not true about losing your internet connection or worse. That's just fear.

Where your risk lies is in your domain name. You can lose your hosting and lose your email address IF AND ONLY IF you aren't in compliance with the law - to avoid this problem.

I'm speaking from experience here. I used Group Mail to blast out an unsolicited letter to 9000 people for a client and got in "trouble" with Godaddy. Some asshat webmaster decided to extort us for money and reported us and threatened to put us on every anti-spam list in the country if we didn't pay him $2000.

We were totally in the right and had the opt-out link and legal notice in the footer. After simply pointing out that we were in compliance, Godaddy didn't touch our accounts. All I had to do was forward their support dept. a copy of my email with the notice and all problems went away.

I would have sued that asshat webmaster but he was in a foreign country - so it really wouldn't have gone anywhere.

Read the FTC guidelines - just google "Can Spam Act Compliance for Business" - read the PDF.

It matters more the CONTENT of your letter not whether its opt in. Please comment....

Be careful in sending group messages. Marketing is a great source for gaining customers but doing it the wrong way could make or break your business. Plan ahead and learn all you can before clicking that send button. Optin either isn't allowed. You may not jeopardize your connection but it may be unpleasant to your prospective clients' impression on your services as well as your image.

Hopefully you didn't buy a list. Stick to 100% lead generation, and use Aweber (i'm biased).

For me I use Aweber. I recommend using double opt-in rather than single.
When you join Aweber , there are a lot of tutorial teach you to create web form.
    Don't be serious.
