Wondering About Music Liscensing for Offline/ Online Media?

I'm not sure how much experience warriors have in the music industry or if this is the right forum to ask this but I'm thinking of selling music I created a while back and which is just sitting on my computer. I've been told it's pretty good and someone suggested it could be used or commercial use and there's a target market for it. At first I wasn't certain but am thinking more seriously about this.

I'm thinking of marketing it towards small media companies for a set amount based on how many times per month/ year it is expected to be used.

I'm not sure where to start though... would it be wise to contact them via email? There's the issue of gatekeepers to get through also. There's also exclusive and non-exclusive right prices to determine too if needed.

Would it be a good idea to "test the waters" by putting some of it up for sale at one of those royalty free sites? I feel I'd be competing with too many other people and wouldn't be able to carve a niche out at one of those sites.

Guidance and feedback is appreciated.

I think something like this would sell better by someone searching for it rather than you offering them it by cold-calling.

Like you say I definitely think you could create a niche out of this (and maybe a well paid one for custom music tracks) but, like everything, it is how you market it. You need to have a website where you can let people listen to, and hopefully buy, first of all. and some offer to capture their contact details so you can follow up with new tracks etc if they don't buy at first.

    Good Luck!

Yes, when I first started I made of list of 20 royalty free music sites and uploaded about 20 tracks to all of them. YouLicense, Rumblefish, etc. Also, you can make money with YouTube content id if you use CDbaby sync licensing.

I can tell you that if categorized correctly putting your music on royalty free sites for licensing could make you some money. I know I've spent a lot of time searching them for various projects. I spent more than a couple of days checking stuff out on one site I liked planning my licensing strategy.
