You shouldn't go full-time online until you get kicked in the teeth a few times and survive it

I went full-time online in 2009 because my online business was making 5x as much as my job.

Plus most of it was continuity, so I felt secure.

I thought that was a good indicator of being time to go full-time online.

But now I think there's a better indicator.

I call it getting kicked in the teeth.

It's when you lose accounts...

When Google drills your sites...

When sites get hacked and you have to recover...

When you find out you owe the IRS $20k when you thought you only owed them a few grand...

These are all examples of it.

And only when you have proven to yourself that you can survive getting kicked in the teeth a few times, only then should you go full-time online.

How do you survive getting kicked in the teeth?

By preparing yourself with marketing basics and principles you can use no matter the situation.

By having the guts to get back up and keep going even if you're starting with a clean slate.

You marketing vets know what I'm talking about.

When do you think is the right time to go full-time online?

I think it's important to know the basics.

I wanted to quit my job as soon as I got into IM. I'm glad I didn't because there was so much I still had to learn. Now I have quit my job and earn my keep writing articles every day.

But I know get people signing up to my list every day and it's quite a special feeling. I never had this in such volume before and it's great to see it's all coming together. I've also learned to get pretty good traffic without Google. Something I wouldn't have had a clue about last year.

I definitely think people need a good 6-12 months of understanding the basics of traffic, content, and sales.

It's time for you to go full time online once you've been into your online business for at least 12 months. Within that span of time, you can come up with a Business Continuity Plan (BCP). This plan documents that things that you need to do when this unfortunate event happens (again). Please note that those events already happened in those 12 months, either directly to you or through the experience of business partners who are engaged into the same line of business.

Once you've developed your quality control processes and BCP, and once you've seen an upward trend on your monthly sales, I would say it's time to go full time online.

Great advice and thanks for sharing. My belief comes from being kicked in the face, the teeth, the head and anywhere else that could be reached. i've bounced back stronger a better man for it. Excellent advice, Jason!

    Cheers, Baadier
