The alexa rank is a general indicator of the traffic levels, 1st in Alexa's rank (Google.com I think, or Facebook) has the strongest traffic while those below 5M have poor traffic.

However, it isn't accurate at all, it's merely a general indication.

My advice would be to install some tracking software such as Google Analytics - track where your traffic is coming from, you may be ranking for some keywords you didn't realise.

Having alexa rank over 3 million indicates bad traffic for your website. However it depends on the website.

I've seen a lot of websites with good alexa rank, but they are almost dead because the owners are driving traffic from exchange systems and in that way they are increasing the rank which is very stupid in my opinion

All it can ever even pretend to measure (and this not very accurately) is the number of visitors who have the Alexa toolbar installed on their computers. And those people are almost all internet marketers.

It gives literally no indication of anything else at all.

I can see it (just about) being relevant to someone trying to sell a website (who imagines - perhaps even rightly - that his potential purchaser might be interested in it), or to someone trying to sell advertising space on a website (that's specifically internet marketing related). But for any other purposes at all, it just has no relevance.

However high or low my sites' "Alexa ranks" are has precisely zero to do with how successful my business is, how big my income is, the quantities of potential customer traffic my sites are attracting, or anything else of any significance to me at all.

Then forget and ignore this, Lakshmi. It has absolutely nothing to do with your business at all. Pet owners (unless they happen also to be professional internet marketers for a living) do not have the Alexa Toolbar on their computers and it isn't physically possible for their visits to be measured in that way. From your perspective (just as from mine), your site's "Alexa rank" is absolutely meaningless and irrelevant.

It can be used to quickly get an idea as to how much traffic a site receives. Other than that I wouldn't use it for much.

Alexa tracks a website's traffic history, and gives a ranking based upon the number of visitors using Alexa toolbar. We all know that Alexa ranking lacks in accuracy, but Alexa rank is important.

Although Alexa ranking is not that important like some of our friends here said, but sometime perception do take place. Some audience might think that a website that has a good Alexa ranking is a good website. Therefore, there is no harm if we can get a better ranking on Alexa.

Alexa is an indicator of your progress not an aim in itself.

I can't see any importance of alexa. It's all about getting sales and earning money for me. So here alexa is nothing.

Alexa is important because it help you determine the page rank of a website. The higher the page rank the more popular a website is. In addition, Alexa gives more exposure to your website.

Sorry, Gene, but this isn't right at all.

"Alexa rankings" measure and are based on one thing and one thing only, and that's the number of visitors to a site who have the Alexa toolbar installed and working on their computers.

There's no way that an "Alexa ranking" can help you to determine the page rank of a page at all. They have nothing to do with "page ranks" at all - that's something completely different (and also fairly unimportant and insignificant, these days).

(By the way, strictly speaking "websites" don't have page ranks anyway: page ranks are page-based, not website-based: I think you were probably referring to the page rank of a website's own home page? But that has nothing to do with its Alexa ranking, anyway).

It just doesn't - sorry. It has nothing to do with "giving exposure" to your website at all.

This subject, though actually perfectly simple and straightforward, certainly seems, for some strange reason, to be surrounded by myth and mystery.
