Would it be worth it to gate content to force subscription?

I put up some free information on my website today, some targeting Olympics traffic, and it's working in getting hits, but I am noticing they just come, get the information, and leave. Nobody is subscribing. I've moved my newsletter subscription form and changed the text a bit so hoping tomorow is better, but anyways is it worth it to gate some of this content in my member's section to force a subscription (free)? Would it be even worth capturing this general, free-seeking traffic?

I am not telling my niche, but here's a parallel example:

Say you have a site about diving and sell gear and tips on diving. You post Olympics diving results so people come and check out the results. They might not be divers themselves so is it worth capturing their e-mails?

Some of my info is a little less available than Olympics results, though, can't all be found easily elsewhere.

You might be better off with PPC ads. You would at least get some income. I would think they are more interested in the results than anything you have to offer. Adsense might be able to provide them with more targeted ads.
