How does everyone feel about dot INFO domains?

I was just wondering how people felt about dot info domains. Does anyone have a .info domain with high PR?

Does .info affect rank priority in comparison to a .com. For example--

mysite.info vs mysite.com.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages that you know of besides the obvious, like the price and human recognition.

I am interested in a purely informational website, no aff links and im not concerned about branding on this particular project.

What do you think?

    Just an opinion... but I always try and go with .com names. The reason being is it's just simply what people expect.

    They always assume a domain name will start with www. and end with .com so that's what I give them.

    The only way I would use anything else is if it's a really really good name as in very keyword optimized and exactly what you want with the exception of .INFO

    My thing is if you tell someone "my website is www.mysite.info" and they don't go there right away they might remember it wrong, type in www.mysite.com and because of that you'll lose them forever.

    just my 2 cents though

      Good points. IMHO, the exception to this that is starting to emerge is .TV

    I also try to stay away from .infos, i don't really register nets or orgs either. Whenever possible I just go with the .com because I think there is more value in it.

    I find that people are put off by info names and dislike them. coms are expected and rated rather highly but it all depends on what your site is all about. If it was just a free site with information on it i would use an info but for a blog or general website i would stay away.

    However if your using it as a simple landing page why not use a net extention as i have often used these for affiliate purposes and they are extremely cheap.

    .info domains are good for redirects to your affiliate link and good for CPA offers. However if you are building a legitamate website I would suggest .com as it has the most value and gets ranked the highest.

    There cool..You will lose some traffic to the .com. The majority of visitors will bookmark your site if they like it and not rely on memory. I will go for a .info if a .com is not available.

    in terms of search engine rank, i haven't yet seen one in the first page therefore i think google is giving some sort of disadvantage. but if you have a massive list, that wouldn't matter at all.

    I have a web design client who refused to pay for his domain and hosting renewal so the domain has come back to me. It's a .net domain, but has a page rank of 2. I'm still on his list and I noticed in an email update he sent out today that he's gotten a .info of the same name. I've decided that I will do something with the old domain myself...why waste it? We'll see in a few months how his site is doing!

    Here's my take. You can get .info for a buck and change for first year from godaddy. So all blogfarm spammers are buying up those domains. If I were goog (and I am not!) I would look at them with some suspicion, unless one is past the first year of reg or registered for multiple years.

    Generally speaking in my experience its typically better to go with .com names, as non marketers and the general population expect most internet sites end with a .com domain. The .com has fast become the standard and most keywords can be optimized to .com domains for search results. If you're typically referring people to your website they will always expect .com on the end.

    My 1st priority extension is dot com, however once dot com is not available for selected domain name i do prefer dot info.

    Think about what it says. I'm sure to most people the word info would mean information. If you were to look at a url that read www.juggletennisballs.info Surely anyone reading that would assume that it's obviously a site with information about juggling tennis balls? An article site or a blog perhaps. I don't think google would see it any differently either, providing the content was relevant. Of course if your company was called Juggle Tennis Balls, then yes, .com would make a lot more sense and of course you'd pay extra for it.

    Personally, I can't see there being anything wrong with .info domains. They still make it into the top 10 of Google.

    It really depends upon how you're planning to drive traffic to the site. If it's all AdWords or links from existing sites then who really cares what the TLD is?

    Like most I would go for .com first, however I have had .info sites rank on Google's first page. As your site is "purely informational" it might be a good fit.

    Actually, there's one huge advantage of .info domains. If people are searching for information about something and include the word 'info' in their search terms, the .info sites will automatically receive a boost. Try it one any search term, "web hosting info" for example, and see where the .info sites appear.
