How to conduct market research for monetized sites or digital products?

Newbie here.
I have several ideas for sites I'd like to create and am wondering if there are any good articles or books out there about doing market research before creating a site or product. For instance, there are some guided meditation CD's (or downloads) I'd like to make that target a specific niche, but I have no idea whether those would be profitable. I've carefully read and tried Tim Ferriss' guidelines for market research in 4HWW, but that's the extent of my knowledge.
