Discrepancy between Google Analytics stats and Cpanel AWSTats

I have got a real problem. There is now a massive discrepancy between my Google Analytics visitor numbers and my Cpanel AWstats visitor numbers? Like of the order of 100 visitors! Last four days have had over 100 visitors recorded on AWstats and under 30 on Analytics. There appears to have been a massive bounce in visitor numbers on AWstats since the start of the Olympics on Friday which I can understand as this is a weight loss blog and I talk about my new running regime and mention the Olympics a fair bit, but why is it not reflected on Analytics? help please? Also Google Adsense is similarly not picking up on the high visitor numbers as no clicks despite 150 visitors yesterday which i find hard to believe .

There has always been a big discrepancy between G Analytics and Awstats. Although G Analytics provides FAR more metrics than Awstats does, I believe that Awstats is actually more accurate, at least with regards to the 'unique visitors' stat.

I think the reason for this is because Awstats is installed on your server, so it has direct access to the actual data that your stats are pulled from. G Analytics, on the other hand, does NOT access your server (it uses a Javascript widget on your website in order to gather stats), so it has to make an 'educated guess' about some (if not most) of your site's statistics.

So.... use G Analytics when you need a good overview of a bunch of different types of stats, and use Awstats when you need a more accurate representation of 'unique visitors'.

    My 2 cents.

It also matters WHEN you check the stats between the two different programs. Google has high latency when reporting and it depends on a lot of factors - higher traffic can delay it. So go back and compare apples to apples a few days later. You may notice that google analytics finally caught up.
