A Newbie-ish Amazon Affiliate Experiment

Hi warriors. I've been doing internet marketing for about 4 years, a lurker around these parts for most of those, a member here for a little while and as of today a future Amazon affiliate marketer.

I make what many would call decent income online through information marketing but I'm looking to supplement it by focusing on building a few niche authority review sites based on a handful of specific Amazon products.

I really enjoyed the information and tips given by wolfmmiii and enjoy his bum marketing-esq theory so I've decided to follow his blueprint which I've already picked up and gone through. Looks very doable and easily scalable once I get the entire process down.

Now don't laugh at me because I know this is a bit ridiculous....but I've never used wordpress before and have no idea how to set it up. At this point that's looking to be the hardest part of the process. Thank godness you only have to do that part once per site and there's tons of info online about how to do it.

I'm just getting started and my goal is to earn > $1000/month from Amazon by the end of the year.

I'm going to use this thread to document my journey through this process as well as my results in hopes that it will help someone like me who' wants to break into this thing too.

Wolfmmiii if you're out there and anyone else who's ever been in the struggle, I wouldn't mind a few words of encouragement and a few questions answered if you don't mind.

1. When you're setting up wordpress how do you choose a homepage keyword?
2. What types of keywords do you use as categories?
3. Where can I go to find some decent wordpress themes?

Thanks a bunch and can't wait to get the ball rolling.

Wordpress installs are a breeze now, back when Wordpress first was released it was slightly more difficult, but not really.

Don't sweat it! The only Amazon affiliate niche site I ever created was on Wordpress and it worked out well. I used a Amazon product scraper to create the posts. But you probably don't want to do that nowadays.

    Good luck!

Dang, it is amazing of all the stuff I miss on WF. Wish I seen that months ago. I gave up on Amazon some time ago, but after reading those links I just put one of the methods in play. wow. Hope it works. I never got a sell yet on Amazon products. Going to cross my fingers now.

I'm glad you find my posts helpful.

    1. I don't worry about a homepage keyword. I don't care if my homepage is even ranked. I want my product review pages to rank so I worry about finding low competition products to promote since I can usually rank them without any manual backlinking.

    2. My categories are typically manufacturer names or brands

    3. I prefer theme-junkie myself.

Thanks to all who replied and hey wolf, thanks again for being a major inspiration.

After a couple hours of head scratching, deep sighing fun I have my hosting account set up, first wordpress project and all the needed plugins installed, all which I'll configure en la manana.

The hunt is on for a decent theme and then I'll get started. Already identified a handful of potentially good pickins. If nothing else this is gonna be fun.

I created a challenge in another forum where I try to motivate people to build product review sites and have them ready by xmas season. You can find them at xmaschallenge.info

I've been lucky enough to make money off amazon but don't consider myself an expert. The free tutorials are on basic development. Tell me what you think.

      Thanks boxoun!

So I picked up a few themes from theme-junkie (cheers wolf) and I'll spend today configuring and getting it together. It's off to the races with doing my first review by later tonight or tomorrow hopefully.

I was poking around at the automated backlinking service Onlywire and are my eyes deceiving me or do you have to pay $99 dollars a month if you have more than one site you want to use it for?? Holy hell that's a lot. I could understand that price for someone who's been bringing home the bacon from some sites but not for a young blood like myself.

Is there anything else like Onlywire that's more affordable by any chance?

Whats the profit margin you're looking to get from Amazon - in order to reach your $1,000/month goal by the end of the year?

@ Tom Thanks, I'll contact you soon to get your opinion/clarification on a couple things from your ebook.

As expected the learning curve has been pretty steep for me with Wordpress but I do believe I'm about 95% there in 2 days. Now I can put aside most of the fiddling and do what produces the results....write content.

I want to go for 100 reviews for my first project. Is there an issue with striving to get them up all up within 4 weeks or should they be done at a slower pace?

I'm amazed at the number of junk sites out there on first pages for some products. Blatant copy and past from Amazon with flashing gifs everywhere of the typical BUY NOW!!! variety.

Tons of low hanging fruit indeed.

@ Randall, I'm not sure what you mean but I'm targeting products $200 or higher in the niche I've chosen. So according to my figures I'll have to get commissions on an average of 80 qualifying sales a month for my plan to work. That's 3 a day. Hope that's not too difficult considering I'm aiming for a 100 page site.

Four weeks is an OK target. I personally don't have a specific target so some sites get reviews every day and others get them every week or so. It really depends on what mood I'm in.

    1. I try to incorporate the word "review" to the domain name since you are focusing on product reviews.

    2. I generally use the brand or product name for categories.

    3. You can use genesis, thesis or heatmap.

Thanks for the tips ya'll. I'm done with the basics now and have identified roughly 50 products to promote in my niche to start. I'll be focused on writing for the next week or two and getting all the content up and see what happens.

I'm thinking when I'm done I'll let these 50 articles sit for a while and if they produce I'll continue to pan for more gold in the niche and add a couple reviews a week as I word on the foundation of my second project.

Both of these formats are excellent for domain names (xxxx=product category/niche):

      xxxx review

      OR

      xxxx ratings

Most of the time you will find these formats to have good natural keyword volume so I would start there!
