USE THE SPELL CHECKER...

Hey Warriors I want to remind everyone that when a word is underlined with a red squiggly line, that's a very good indication it's spelled wrong. I see so many posts, replies and even subject lines with a ton of spelling mistakes and it get's annoying after a while. (My pet peeve if you didn't already guess)

So take the extra effort and correct your spelling mistakes. It makes it much easier (and tolerable) to read.

It's one of mine, too. I've gotten some strange looks reading the paper in public and muttering "what moron proofed this?"

Agreed, if it weren't for spell check I would have been fired years ago... Here's another tip, Firefox has a spell check too (not sure if IE does or not, if it does as I normally use the Fox... Very handy when posting to forums.

Consider this, if you're working on your rep and would like to do business with people on WF, or anywhere for that matter, spelling DOES count.

    Hi Mike,

I would like to remind everyone that some of us still use Internet Explorer for our browsers, and it does not have that functionality built in.

Chrome and Firefox have it, but my version of IE doesn't. I use Chrome and IE at the same time, but I usually use IE for work, and Chrome for fun (if that makes sense).

Spelling mistakes aren't going anywhere soon, and if anything, spell checkers have made people worse spellers. Try not to let it get to you though.

    All the best,
    Michael

p.s. My pet peeve is people who use all caps to draw more attention to their threads.

Wrong & wrongly are both correct in this situation, however I could have used the word "spelt" instead of spelled. Of course I could have elected for the word "incorrect" instead of "wrong".

Its interesting to me to see how sloppy people like my self are like bulls in China shops.... Spreading good info, but alienating so many people because of our sloppiness.

Its like talking to an accountant... Every little thing hangs them up when you are thinking "Don't you get the big picture?", but its good to be aware of how many are actually alienated from reading our stuff by these things.

It's one thing on a free internet forum, but whenever I download a special report or an ebook that I've paid money for, only to find spelling and grammatical errors - then we've got a problem.

In my own thinking its like, "I just gave you for $27.00, knowledge that cost me tens of thousands to gain, and you are going to nit pick over my spelling?", but Im coming to understand that it truly hangs alot of people up and inhibits their ability to grasp what you are saying in a flowing manner.

There's an easy way to get past having to check your spelling for WSO's. Make it a video tutorial

Good thought, but then you alienate half the people on dial up who have trouble loading vids or who dont have "speakage" (Speakers), which accounts for alot of smaller remote areas....even in America. Im at my brothers now, and he has a big house in the country, no internet access here, I have to tether to my phone. He can only get dial up.

Mike, thanks for pointing this out.

Blatant spelling and grammatical errors drive me crazy too (although spelling errors are the most egregious). Unfortunately, it's only getting worse. I think it's an indicator of the dumbing down of America (as Dan Kennedy has pointed out). How is anyone to know you're not really an idiot if you're spelling like one???

Using "your" instead of "you're" or "there" instead of "their" also drives me INSANE! Come on people! Are you SURE you graduated high school???

And way too many people use text-speak in places where it's not necessary (like forums and Facebook). Unless you're texting or tweeting, text-speak is rarely necessary. Using "ur" for "you're" just makes people look idiotic. Text-speak is only really necessary when you're severely limited in the number of characters you can use. Texting and tweeting are the only two appropriate uses I can think of.

You've expressed what a lot of people think. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course. However, in a business context, the real issue is CREDIBILITY. You want to be taken seriously and have people give you their money? Then learn to spell! (Or use a spell checker.)

It cracks me up that people will buy a WSO on how to build up their credibility, yet can't be bothered to spell correctly.

The occasional typo is understandable. (There are probably some in this post.) Forums, blogs and social media are all fast-moving. But they should be the exception, not the rule.

The Internet and social media have lowered the barrier to entry for starting a business and succeeding. It should not have lowered the standards of professionalism.

I look at spelling as a form of self respect. Sure, the odd one slips through, everyone makes mistakes and of course grammatical errors do occur but when people spell simple words completely wrong... and I'm talking simple here... that drives me crazy!

For some reason grammar doesn't make me cringe as much, just blatant spelling errors.

I would like to remind people that snuggling lines or w/e are cute, and I misspelll just to get responses some times cause its fun to see people get mad over one letter while twenty five percent of the world is starving to death.

Fun fact, (in Firefox at least) if you do happen to see that squiggly red line, you can simply right click on the word that is underlined and there will be a corrected listing of words... So, you can actually learn to spell the word correctly as you go.
