How to monetize my riddles site (advice needed)

So I've been lurking for a few days now, it's time to come out of the den . You guys make everything seem so possible!

I am very good at tech stuff, and even writing (on some topics), but have nearly zero marketing (online or offline) skill, and nearly zero make money online skill. I figure it's about time I start working on these skills.

I need advice / ideas on how to monetize my riddles blog. It's been around since 2007 and I've been writing on and off (mostly off), but I've gathered some content over time. Currently there are 82 riddles, all original and mostly funny .

I get about 10 unique visitors a day from search engines, and I have 47 subscribers (feedburner), out of which around 25 are email subscribers (with "email via feedburner"). I think there's potential for more, I just don't know how to get them.

I don't know if I'm allowed to link in my first post, so I won't link directly, I'll say the website is geekriddles dot com.

My question is: how would you go about monetizing this website?

Even a few cents a day would be much better than it's making now (zero) . Dollars would be even better

Note: AdSense rejected it (probably because I sold a one year link to some poker site during the 3 months it took them to review it, while waiting for approval :p).

Thanks in advance!

    Cool site.

Well, start by pumping up your brand a bit. Get a guy off fiverr to do a new logo and website header.

You could even load up your logo at one of the online T-shirt sites, where people can print their own shirt, and you get a % of profit. You're not a true club member unless you have a Tshirt right?

Ad a banner widget, which says "your ad here." Then have a advertising rates section. Sell 125x125 for $19/mo or something. Buy 3 months get one free or something.

Recommend Amazon products you like on riddles. Use your affiliate link.

    Just some ideas.

    Good luck to you!

At 10 unique visitors a day I wouldn't even worry about monetization, you're going to get next to nothing from any ads you place. Focus on building traffic.

Not sure if you're doing this, but why not add some quizzes or riddles where people have to sign up to find out if they got it right - and on the thank you page, you offer them stuff....

Or you offer free reports on the subject of your riddles right there on the page, and get people to sign up to your list that way. Inside the report, there are links to your paid resources and/or affiliate links...

And I definitely agree with RicJed that it's important to build lots of traffic.

Try a few press releases too...

      Good luck!

First we want to generate traffic and build a list.

Some viable ways: implant a simplified version of the riddles at various channels: FB page, twitter, YouTube videos, guest posting at similar riddles sites pinterest, etc. These posts point to your specified landing page that offers the answer and a more comprehensive set of riddles once one opt in. Once they are in your list, continue to provide riddles and other interesting tips and tricks to get / solve riddles through a series of email via an Autoresponder. Of course your email signature contains the URL of your site.

Then for every 4 or so tips, offer one of your riddle packages, and/or affiliate offers from ClickBank (esp. if you don't have a product), CJ, etc.

Thanks for your replies and ideas!

I realize that I could definitely use more traffic so I'll focus on that first. Then on monetizing.

So my new question is: how would you go if you wanted to build traffic to my riddles blog geekriddles dot com?

Elisabeth you mention press releases. Sorry for the newbie question, but could you elaborate on this?

Another question, I know it depends on the niche and other factors, but roughly how many daily unique visitors do you think I need on this particular site to make, say, $1/day? How about $10/day? Is it proportional?

    Thanks again!

Cant see this being mentioned anywhere here but for something like riddles, which I should imagine have a form of entertainment value, i'd personally reccomend you set up a social networking profile with facebook for this purpose and have a riddle a day type thing in order to attract fans and likes to your facebook page and from there you can promote your own website as well as any other offers to your sites.

You could then potentially run surveys with something like wufoo and have the thank you redirect page as a cpa offer or even an amazon offer for a product directly related to your survey. cpa submits dont pay a great deal, maybe a dollar or two per submit but this can add up if its genuinely linked to what the survey was about or what your page is about.

Ive seen joke of the day type pages on facebook with tens of thousands of subscribers. if you managed to get to ten thousand likes and just 1% of those opted in to a cpa form that paid $1 and you did this once a week you'd net $100 for very little effort.

Hope this is of some use to you!

Find, join, and post on riddles blogs and forums. Check big boards and blog directories. Run PPC (depending on your income model). Capture subscribers, and sell to backend customers. Do good SEO, and of course... upload Youtube videos.

Build more traffic, get it to 100 unique daily visitors and then focus on monetization or flip the site for a quick profit.

The site content is really good. But as most people here said, you need to focus on traffic.

You asked how many unique visitors you need per day in order to make 1$ a day or so; well the thing is there isn't an exact formula for this because this depends on the type of campaign (banner ads) you're running. For example, you can run a campaign and get 5 visitors per day, but if the campaign is good and generates enough clicks, you will make high profits regardless of the small number of visitors. For examples, one of those "BrainGames" campaigns would be perfect. The same applies if the contrary happens.

If I were you, I'd try to add more color to the site, maybe add some sidebar features were you include "The riddle of the day" or something similar.
Also, saw someone mentioned creating a sign-up system in order for people to find out the answers for the riddles. That is a brilliant idea.
This will entice your readers and make them more involved with the blog.

I would recommend using an Ad Platform after you gather up a bit more traffic but you could still use one at this stage I guess (a good, serious ad platform that provides good campaigns)
I am a project manager of an ad platform and I can tell you this, its all about the campaigns and the flexibility of the platform.

    Hope this helps!
    Good luck
