It looks like livestrong has a store. They also get tons of donations to keep it going as it seems to be for a good cause.

Simply shredded has lots of adsense ads, and possibly sponsors or from affiliate programs.

Scooby's workshop may not make tons. I see adsense ads on the site and affiliate book reviews but it may still make some.

There are lots of ways to make money from your site. There is adsense ads, you can sell ads to other companies on a monthly basis. You can advertise clickbank, amazon or other affiliate products. Once someone clicks on your ad and buys something from the redirect site you get a portion of the sell.

Sometimes even if the site is not making money you can sell it to someone else for a decent profit because it may have a lot of traffic and the buyer may monetize it.

There are many ways to monetize authority websites & it really depends upon what niche they operate in & what kind of traffic... the site draws.
One option that u could look at different kind of advertisement depending upon the demography of our site visitors ...option could be Google adsense, Banner ad, Textual links through link brokerage firms..etc..other good option could be affiliate marketing ofcourse u need to have that kind of traffic..which converts ..
One other very useful method these days used by many webmasters to monetize is to sell contextual links from theirs sites on monthly basis to buyers on monthly basis if u have high authority site with PR1+..u could directly sell the links or use many networks that helps u sell links from those sites..

yes banners are flat rate. They guarantee some views, but not clicks.

price for a banner 300x300px for a 50000/unique/day site here in the heart of europe costs about €8k what is about $9.600 for a week. They guarantee 1,5mil displayed banners.
The prices in US? Not sure, but I think waaay above.
