Since the Penguin update has been in full force since April and un-natural backlinks are no longer just frowned upon, does this effect backlinks to videos and the searches in Youtube?

After penguin, sometimes fake views don't may any sense. But not all the time. And backlink always have value but you have to ensure that this links look natural.

It did not effect actual Youtube search results at all, but I think it did effect ranking videos slightly.

Before you could have literally just used Scrapebox or xrumer and blasted a video with 10,000 links to rank it in Google. Now a days, I still see that work occasionally, but it's more effective to build links naturally like you would a website.

Besides, if you choose to rank a video with un-naturally, it's only a mater of time before Google does a big video ranking update and you'll have to do it all over again.

I would use Youtube just for what it's there for... creating high quality and informative videos - not backlinks.
