[FREE] HOSTS File Editor - Giving Away!

Hi folks,

Since I know most of you heard about the Windows HOSTS file and how annoying it is to locate and edit it all the time, I've made a small program that does the trick in 2 seconds and I want to share it with you

It's capable of:
  • displaying the content of your HOSTS file
  • adding a new URL to your HOSTS file
  • deleting a certain URL from your HOSTS file

For those who don't know what a HOSTS file is, it's a file in which you can write URLs that you don't want your operating system to open (regardless whether it's your browser or some other application trying to access it).

I'm still a beginner at programming (6 months now) and I only wanted to contribute something to this forum (although this software can probably be found somewhere else as well by now).

Its only 186Kb, and you can download it here: Host Editor

Note: I haven't tested this on operating systems other than WIN7, but it should work fine on other Windows systems as well. If it does not, please report so I can fix it! ^^

Cheers,
Zannix

I would highly recommend making the hosts file read only as well except when editing it. that way a program can't easily modify the file.

    thanks,

      Hi Jack,

Thanks for the suggestion. That WOULD be useful indeed. I'll be sure to implement that one.

    Hey Zannix,

That's a good try of your knowledge in programming. Since you've just begun, it's better to develop applications that are not existing yet. For example, what you have just developed can be done by HijackThis already, which is a lot better, of course.

Perhaps, you can visit planetsourcecode.com and see those readily available application programs there. For sure, you'll get an idea on what you can develop.

Nevertheless, it was a good try testing your programming skills for the one you've shared to us. Good job!
