How to create a "buzz"?

I'm planning to creating a "buzz" campaign, along with my partners, using the social networking sites. None of us has done this before, so perhaps some expert "buzzers" can validate this approach.

Here's what we plan.

Set up the target site, then....

Social Networking Sites

What to do with these sites:
- Create an account and include suitable content on the profile page, and point to the Manifesto page
- Find an efficient way of identifying other people on that site in the right domain
- Ask them to be a "friend" (or whatever the term is)
- They get to see the profile
  • Youtube
  • Faceboook
  • Twitter
  • etc.
Satellite Sites

What to do with these sites:
- Create an "information page" about the topic with a link to the target site
  • Squidoo
  • Hub Pages
  • ??

Remote Blogs

What to do with these sites:
- Create a blog
- Write posts relating to the topic that point to the target site

  • Blogger
  • Wordpress.com
  • ....
  • Microblogging sites where individual posts can be bookmarked
Social Bookmarking

What to do with these sites:
- Create an account
- Bookmark the target page
- Bookmark the Satellite Sites
- Bookmark the Remote Blog posts
- Bookmark other people's blog posts about your site

  • del.icio.us
  • digg
  • stumbleupon
  • etc.

Is that about right or have we missed a trick?

    Alex,

To create "Buzz" you must have something
worth talking about. It must be interesting,
    inspiring, entertaining, controversial and
    "Buzzworthy".

Yes, you can leverage all the sites you
mention above. You should also target the
top forums and blogs in your niche. If there
is a "trick" it's to get the key players and
influencers to engage in the conversation.

      Thanks, John

We obviously think we have something interesting and buzzworthy (although I'm not sure how much attention we'll now get in the shadow of Harvey's glasses stats controversy).

And yes - we plan on getting conversations going in the forums.

But what we'd missed is commenting on the key blogs. Thanks for that.

@ John - Very well said. I must say "controversial" works very well at many times.

Don't forget press releases, they can spread the buzz -- and generate tons of interest as well.

Yep - press releases, of course. Thanks, Magic.

I was mainly wanting confirmation that the mechanics of using the social sites was right - and hoping that the approach I listed would help others as well, since understanding how to work them all in an integrated way is not at all obvious.

You haven't said what your buzz is about. Is it about accounting (yawn), or is it about how to get the latest ipod free (wow!)?

Whatever it is, how about doing something really outrageous (though legal) that will catch the attention of the media and the immediate interest of the public? Think about how a publicity expert like Paul Harturian would handle it.

That will give your business an initial boost that should carry you a long way.

Sadly, it IS about accounting. Now how can we make that interesting? Don't forget that a lot of people make a hell of a lot of money from accounting - which makes it much less boring!

Kidding - it's not about accounting. It's in the IM niche - so you guys will get to hear of it shortly.

Yes - an outrageous angle is what we need. Something like "Accountants found practicing without any professional qualifications! Shock Horror!"

Mr Hartunian - if you're reading this, we'll hire your on a commission basis!

You forget one important aspect it seems as everyday there is a new platform out there that is getting Google love and having loads of visitors literally overnight. Find these properties and set up accounts using your keywords and once again link back to you pages and once again do not forget to bookmark.

I can best explain it in a diagram. But there is approximately 20 bookmarks I use . Each one of these 20 bookmarks I have about 10 accounts. So each satellite and my web page I bookmark a total of 200 times . I am not explaining this right but I hope you get the idea.

Sorry I have been up for the past 48 hours working on my book as everyone is coming down hard on me. Even though it is not slated for release next year. Plus working on my new product the million dollar a day blueprint. Which is about the mentality behind making money. So busy busy busy.

      Thanks, Trent.

I think you're confirming that my suggested approach is about right, but with some refinements.

Yes. Twitter's the current darling: anything else in sidelines that you know of?

I think I get the picture. It's a refinement of what I proposed above, I think. You're suggesting having 10 accounts with each bookmarking site - which I didn't cover.

I think we have "excite" and "free stuff" covered.

        Stage 1 is simply "buzz"

        Stage 2 is "free stuff"

        Stage 3 is "launch"

CJ - good point about getting others to help spread the word. Actually, that's really the only way it will work. The viral effect / the "tipping point", all that sort of good stuff.

    Alex,

I'd put a lot of emaphasis on spreading the
word via video. YouTube is an excellent
    channel for buzz marketing.

Set up a dedicated account for your project
and then use other sites to leverage traffic
    to your videos.

I think a buzz starts more naturally. It should excite a lot of people at the same time.

Yes, I agree with that, being able to excite people but at the same time putting sensible information that can help others as well.

It also depends I guess on the target audience. Where as say the initial buzz on the iPhone was targeted at a mass audience and began at a MacWorld presentation, a buzz about the latest pet craze for reptile owners which could be extremely profitable is obviously targeted at a much smaller audience but could be just as amazing.

Allocate your efforts mostly whereever your audience resides first and then let them be the evangelists for you
