Help me put together a newbie training package...

A former school mate of mine and I met on facebook again after almost 20 years. We got talking and he's interested in trying his hands on IM... my problem is... I'm too close to the forest to see the trees that newbies often need to be shown first... result of too many years here in the trenches.

So I need your help...

What does one use and where does one start to train a friend who is computer literate but internet marketing illiterate?
