Basic Question - Changing Website Theme

Hi Warriors

I hope you can help me.

I want to test my website with a different theme but am unsure about the implications.

It is a Wordpress site and I used a designer to create it from a theme.

I'm going in a different direction now with the site - the theme and design I have was more intended to lead to sales of consultations and media work, which it has done. Now, I want it to be different.

If I do switch it to another theme, and I wanted to then switch it back, would the original theme work or would it need a designer to tweak all of the options again?

If I change it, does that impact on the content - the pages, posts, links, etc already created?

Thanks,
Katie

Have you tried installing it locally on your machine? you can test out anything you like without it effecting your main site online.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

No, I haven't done that. I wouldn't know where to start, tbh. The tech skills are a bit beyond me!

Yes, the original theme would work fine. If the original theme has custom options that you've set in a theme control panel somewhere, just be sure not to delete the theme when you switch, simply activate the new theme. That should keep all of your custom options intact in your database should you want to reactivate the original later.

Edit: You can "install" many themes in your Wordpress backend and preview them, etc. So when you switch to your new theme, the old one is still there, it's just not your active theme. You can switch back and forth between themes very easily.

Nope, not at all. And there is a preview feature for Wordpress themes. Go upload your new theme and click the "Preview" link. You can take a look at how things will look without actually making the new theme active.

One thing to keep in mind...if your original theme supported shortcodes, and you used them in your content, switching to a new theme without the same shortcodes will cause the previous shortcodes to stop working.

If you have no idea what I mean by shortcodes then you probably have nothing to worry about. I don't know your experience level or the actual themes you're working with.

    Hope that helps!

    Rule no.1 - always have wp-backup installed.
If anything goes wrong then simply restore it.

Yes - Chris Reeves advice above is spot on.

In WP admin, click Themes, then Install, then upload any number of themes from your computer to your WP site.
They will appear listed in your Admin/Themes and you can preview each of them.
Most themes will not affect content/images/links etc but if you have any ads/content in sidebar widgets etc, some themes might need extra tweaking to get them looking OK

But just clicking 'Preview' will let you see instantly what each new theme will look like.
