OMG, we've created an IM monster!

Here is what's happening today: in order to increase sales many of us have applied sound marketing principles.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUT!

There was a side effect: we have also created many false beliefs.

If you are an experienced marketer, you do understand that every "event" ( a sale, a subscription, a page view, etc.) is preceded by a "process".

So, if you make $10000 in a day (very possible, not that hard) you might have spend 90 days preparing for that event to happen. We're not even counting your previous experience.

Now...

People ignore the 90 day bit, and focus on the 1 day part. Of course, they start searching for ways to make money that fast. And guess what? There are savvy people waiting for them and giving them what they want (even though it doesn't exist). As a result, those false beliefs are affirmed.

In the end, things like marketing research, tracking your numbers, and even testing are seen as UNIMPORTANT and UNNECESSARY for online success.

This puts people who truly want to help in a difficult position - as soon as your product doesn't look like the magic button, or it seems to much like "work" you are hit with a refund or a bad review.

Will this kill us all?

We have all seen websites by "newbies" teaching people how to succeed online. Of course, we know most of them don't make money from these sites.

The problem is, all that stuff spams the net and creates scepticism.

People think the secret is in the mechanics - squeeze pages, long sales copy, autoresponders, etc.

You know it's not - but is it possible for people to teach the good stuff any more? Are people still receptive to good advice?

P.S. This applies to all markets - for instance those who need exercise the most would rather swallow a diet pill, and keep eating pizza for breakfast.

What's the way out? Tell me.

I get what you're saying but I don't think it's going to "kill us all"

    Nice post.

      Thanks!

Here is what I mean: are we going to be able to create real value, with substance or are we going to become more like McDonalds - looks like food, tastes like food but is not really good for your body.

I think there always will be a fresh stream of noobs who will buy whatever hits their attention first. After a few tries to implement that info they will cease buying and trying. Then the next batch of noobs will enter the IM world. Nah. No worries.

        Hey AdwordsMogul,

I guess you could say " that's food for thought"

I think I get what you mean though,

Years ago it was "5% off end of year sale"
and that happened once a year..

Then it was the "half yearly 10% discount"..

        Then 20%,
        then 30% and so on..

Now we "buy 1 and get 2 free"..

Soon to in order to sell a product, it will be "buy this toothpaste and we'll throw in a house for ya,"

(maybe not quite, but I think you get my drift)

I see it as the "evolution of marketing."

People will always "need" products, stuff and things..

And IMO if you provide true value, they will seek you out..

Word of mouth advertising, been around since day 1, and still the best form of advertising..

So have a product that is high quality and great value, the kind people will "sing" about, and let the turkey's" throw in the house to sell toothpaste.."

Thanks for a thought provoking post..

        All the best..

I don't think it may kill the industry, the true individuals that want to succeed would want to get true information that would provide them with the results they want. The truth of the matter is that there is no shiny object that would make you millions fast, only the fundamentals would get you there and it would take time.

I have made $10,000+ in a day and it's not an overnight process and I wish more of the newbie marketers understand that. I may take you over a year to see your first five figure month let alone a day. Most will quit before that time though.

true statement. But it is life in general. Most people just not discipline enough to set goals and meet them. Just quit and complain that it's too hard

So would you say that the false beliefs are the result of our marketing, or is it a result of human nature?

You just need to be very clear in your salescopy, and over-deliver on the backend. Most people won't mind hard work, as long as they believe they can be successful.
