Are website directories any good?

I was thinking about making a few manual submissions to some website directories. But was told that doing this would not really help me that much at all. If website directories don't help much then what is a good way to try and get one way links to get indexed high in the search engine for your key words. Do search engines consider the amount of content on your site?

You should concentrate your efforts on "Authority Sites".

Lets not forget that there is a real world as well as the online
    world to contend with.

    Here's an example:

Lets say you have a website that deals with scholarships
and you want every high school kid that is planning to go to college
to come to your site, learn something, and then sign up for a scholarship or 2.

What do you need to do to get your site out there?

Well for one you are going to need some links form some authority websites,

Who is the authority when it comes to scholarships? Obviously it is going to be the Colleges themselves.

How do you get a link on their site?

What's stopping you from calling several colleges and asking for the financial aid department, or the person in charge of their website? Or sending an email to the guidance counselors of every major school in the US and asking if they can display your page (or a link to your page) in the resource section of their site.

It seems that a lot of people either forget that there is a real world full of people running these websites, or that they don't believe in themselves or their websites enough to go out and do something.

If you spent the time to create a nice site, then there should be no problems.

What's the moral of this story?

Find the authority in your niche, contact them, and get a link pointing from their site to yours.

I mean if you are going to waste time doing something, try doing something that will bring the results you need.

Not everyone is going to say yes, but just like anything else in Internet Marketing, it's a numbers game.

The more you try, the more you get, simple as that.

I hope that this give you some insight into other ways to promote your hard work

That was a really nice thoughful response. It goes without saying. I always felt like if I want to be truelly successful that I would have to think outside the box and not do the same old tired things. I will take this advice to heart. Thanks.

I submitted my website to hundreds of website directories using Maximizer Directory
    service but saw no results.

I have submitted my sites for various free directories and saw no results, so I would say no as well...

Most of the directory submissions do not seem to be found if you check your links with yahoo site explorer (do not rely on the site: command in google - it does not work). My experience has been maybe 10% get found if that.

I still pay the few bucks to have my sites mass submitted, but it's just 1 piece of the puzzle.

oh - and I seem to have better results with links being found on new, pr0 directories then older ones. These are directories that a lot of tools let you submit to using their 'free version'

Just a thought here, not sure if this was covered. I think the directories that handle every topic under the sun are relatively useless to anyone other than those that are paid to place you there.
Audience specific directories are the key I believe, also place your link in the proper category, if there isn't one to suit yours, ask the owner to add it, most will.
I ran a busy directory for a few years geared to the Christian Design community and many people used it, but again a very specific target group.
Time is precious, I would use it looking into related forums as well as directory listings.
I also think that topsites are underused in the past years, though not good for some niche's, having clients listed on topsites that are part of a larger community (such as fishing or hunting) bring results.
    think outside the box !
