#1 Reason Why People Don't Make Money With Internet Marketing

For the longest time I struggled to make money online.

I bought course after course. Spent hours learning about seo, ppc, copywriting, marketing, offline consulting, blogging.

I was obsessive...

I feel in love with Internet Marketing... the dream of "internet marketing lifestyle".

You know...the idea of being free, not having a boss, waking up whenever I wanted, making tons of money.

After two years I could talk the talk. Perhaps you can the same. I knew all the lingo, all the gurus, I could talk about seo, ppc, the works.

I took action too, taught my self how to build website, how to write copy, create products, how to use aweber, etc. However the money I made with minimal. Actually it was pathetic compared to the amount of hours I was putting in.

Fast forward to today, things are quite different. I now make a full time living online and I realize the big mistake I made. It was a mistake that I had made since the moment I started leaning about this internet marketing stuff in 2007.

I fell in love with the wrong thing.

Let me explain.

It is something Jay Abraham said "most entrepreneurs fall in love with the wrong thing. They fall in love with their products and their business when they should be falling in love with their clients and customers."

When I shifted my focus off of IM and onto my clients and customers. Shifted my focus from learning about IM techniques to learning about the clients and customers I wanted to help.

My success skyrocketed.

Being around IM for 6 years now and working with some very successful people, this really is the SECRET to making money online.

It may sound to simple, but it's true.

I think the use of only ONE marketing strategy in your business is a primary reason that alot of new beginners fail. They may get a couple sales here and there, but in the long run, this isn't the proper way to run a business.

The people who never make money online are the people who give up instantly after they spent $2,000 on a PPC campaign, that didnt get them any sales from their $300 product. Lol... this is laughable to me.

I was thinking about the same thing, I'm still struggling, but I 'm learning how can I serve people, help their problems. I just got done with finishing writing my losing weight ebook that took me a week, and want to give away for free, when people opt in to my landing page.

That explains it. The real profit is made from identifying the target 2% that will buy into your premium coaching products and services. It's easier to build a relationship with 10 persons and sell 4 $1000 products than to sell 1000 $4 products.

    Intriguing but true.

For me it's been a BIG relief to ditch every other effort online, apart from driving traffic to my squeeze page for a residual income program.

I have wasted YEARS thanks to information overload, but that time is now over.

Building my list is the focus and the auto responder will take over from there...

Or it's easier to just sell junk products...like PLR...which add zero value to the world.

Which is also why it only sells for $4.

I'll quote what the greatest entrepreneur of our time said...

"Do you want to spend the rest of your lifetime or career merely selling stuff or would you rather spend every second, of every hour, of every day of the rest of your lives transforming lives and futures? - Steve Jobs"

This is the main point for me here. We all suffer from this and I am equally guilty of this. Spending way too much time learning and feeling that I need to know just a little more before I take action...

I do agree with the OP, most of your income would come from understanding your customers and giving them what they want, Internet Marketing is just a means to an end, which is to generate satisfied customers that buys products a good price.

I think there's people constantly considering new stuff and learning about new things... but they never feel confident enough to take action...so they jump to the next "learning curve".
And there's people who jump on stuff, taking action right away... without ever learning enough about it to make it work...so they jump to the next thing.

I believe one has to find a healthy mixture out of both approaches... stop the constant jumping ...and focus on bringing value to customers...

I don't necessarily disagree with you but it depends on the model you are using. If you have clients than obviously thinking of your clients first is key. If you produce products and engage in list building it's also important to keep your customer in mind. But not every IM business model revolves around the client first. If it's a performance PPC affiliate marketing campaign than you still need to think about your customer but they're hardly your main focus.

    Hey Mike,

I've been grasping this as well! As long as you get something into the consumer's hands, and take care of them, Profits will take care of themselves. (Working hard everyday as well)

Thanks for bringing up this idea.

I agree that this is the first reason why most people fail. They don’t care about helping their customers, only about making money somehow.

However, the second reason why most people fail is the fact that they don’t know how to promote their products and beat the competition.

Everything you learned in the beginning helped you achieve the perfect result. If you didn't know how to market your products, you wouldn’t be able to sell anything, even if you would really solve all the problems of the world.

    Hey there,

    Nice post.

To go a bit deeper with it.

Sometimes, it resonates with more peeps if you alter the language of delivery.

The focus (or, focal point) is, 'on the clients', but the real focus should be on
understanding them as if you were the customer, as if you could state their problems without critically thinking about it.

As if your obsession to empathize and understand them knew no bounds.

When you have a precise point of focus on their language, slang, terminology, outlooks, psychology and a strategy to facilitate this evidence retrieval, then you invariably lower your chances of failure 10 fold.

It is hard to stay broke, when you understand a popular problem as if you had engineered it yourself for experimentation. Because solutions are even more conspicuous to customer.

Eben Pagan always says to think of niches as needs, and products as solutions to those needs. Sell them the benefit not the feature.

I must confess that I fell victim to the mentality of sales over value after buying some crappy IM products in my early days. I now recognise that providing more value than the customer expects to receive is the first step to a profitable business.

    Hey Mike,

I agree with you! This industry should be 'customer-centric' and not 'revenue-centric' so to speak.

Because customers are our lifeblood, we must at all times endeavor to keep them happy and satisfied so we keep their business, otherwise they will go out and shift to a competitor site or vendor. Customer satisfaction should always be guaranteed at all times.
