Trouble finding a niche or product idea, and the motivation to do it.

My first number of attempts as an IM'er from 1999-2008 produced minor successes, and major losses. From getting scammed early on to simply running out of resources to sustain my marketing efforts, I forged ahead into each new idea, and finally ran out of steam in 2008, and succumbed to the life of having a j.o.b.

I hate having a j.o.b.

So I'm back in the IM game after a four-year hiatus. A year ago I took a look at some opportunites and purchased Google Sniper 2.0, but never got past watching the video tutorials. Earlier this year I joined the All Solutions Network and some safelists to promote stuff; and joined Just Been Paid. But that's it, I just couldn't get motivated to dig into anything.

Yet I know that IM is what I ultimately want to do!

I know it can happen to me.

Past experience, however, still haunts me, and I need to figure out what will motivate me to do more than just kick tires. I want to feel that same excitement I felt in '99 when the potential of the Internet struck me. It was a whole new universe, and I instinctively knew that, it being a global medium, there was no way I could lose! Right? Well that's what I need to feel again.

Of course, that just can't happen because I have experienced the reality of IM; the work and focus that it requires.

A few weeks ago I stumbled across WF, registered and bookmarked it for later perusal. Then sort of forgot about it. Last week I got an email from George Brown, updating his subscribers with what he's been up to. A link in the email led me to a web page of free stuff he was offering. One of those free things contained a link to.... WF! But I had lost my original username/password from a couple weeks ago, so I re-registered under my real name. The fact that WF was put in front of me twice, via two completely different venues, convinced me that it may be time to try the IM game once more time. So, having said all that...

It seems that all the niche's and product ideas have been taken! And I have no idea where to begin as far as what to put out there that hasn't been put out there before. Not that there really is a brand new idea, but there is a ton of competition, and only so much room at the top. Although I'd settle for just under the top at this point.

And if that wasn't enough, I'm trying to do this with basically no money to invest. I'm a firm believer in spending money to make money, but when there is no money to spend, it changes things. Oh, I have some money, enough to purchase a product; but then nothing left for upsells or any other extras - or even another product.

So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has an idea of where I can start? I've joined Fiverr, and already got a paying gig, so that's encouraging. I also purchased Tiffany's Easy Fiverr Frenzy today, but haven't received a download link yet, but when I do I will be scouring her product to see how to make Fiverr work in my favor.

Other than that, I've been reading the forums and trying to take in what's relevant to me - eat the meat, spit out the bones, as they say. But I'm open to any other suggestions as to how I can get something going in a timely fashion, on an almost non-existent budget (to start).

Thanks!

It will happen, if you keep believing and taking actions while remaining cautious about any loss that you may encounter by any step, but having the right intuition and hunch to work boldly on things that you believe in.

"Put in front of me twice, via two completely different venues"... Does something tell you why Random Walks with Restarts (Google if you don't know it) is meant to be a good way to do SEO (in case you know what SEO is, given that you have treid IM for a number of years)? What you experienced is what Google's original idea about backlinks was meant to be, till they got abused to the Intensive Care Unit.

Why not settle for the top?

And doesn't matter if all "niches and product ideas" are taken. All customers are not yet taken and will never be. Do you think just because Sony (or whoever) had already started seling LCD TVs, Samsung (or whoever) should have run away? The niche and the idea was already taken !!

Doesn't matter too much, although some money would be good to start with. Start offering services that you can offer but don't require any/much investment. Over-deliver on every order. Get glowing client testimonials. That will give you repeat business and new customers also. Roll onwards from there.

This. If you focus on over delivering your clients will be amazed and you'll receive repeat business as well as excellent testimonials which will bring you more $$$

Joel, what - other than or in addition to - IM or making money, are you interested in? There may be one or two things. Motorcycles? Bacon? Gardening? (you get my drift) I bet there's something, something you love AS MUCH AS IM. Some "computer" people I talk to struggle to answer that question - because they love sitting at their computer more than anything. A sports team you're a fanatic about? Maybe it's TEACHING internet stuff to others. I'd start there - at what turns YOU on. That's your niche. If you're in love with Internet Marketing because the internet is a fascinating system (which it is), or you're in love with making money - I'd say neither of those is enough to go forward on. Now, if you're in love with helping people understand how fascinating the internet is, or in love with helping other people make money, that's another thing. But I'd look in the mirror and find out what realllllly makes Joel tick? Heck, it might be family. A whole slew of "mommy bloggers" (many profitable) was spawned from that. So don't be shy. What would you most like to transfer to people about yourself? That's a start. Good luck!

    That should be enough motivation.

If someone asked me the easiest way to make money online it would be the same answer I would have given them 5 years ago.

Find a crowd of people who are passionate about something. If you can't find forums about a certain subject then it is not a passionate enough market.

Find some of the popular forums in your niche and look for those threads that are most active and have the most number of posts and views. They will usually give you some good ideas as to the type of free content you could create and give away.

Give away your free stuff and build a list in the process. Recommend other products to that list.

Rinse and repeat. You are now a money making machine.

Great advice, I agree with this 100%. It's not enough to be passionate about a subject or topic. There must be enough people who are passionate about it too.

Personally, I wouldn't start with Fiverr because, well, because it's just 5 bucks per gig, and you end up GRAVELY under-selling yourself (assuming you have to do something to complete the task - if you're only gonna deliver something digitally like an ebook then it's fine).

But, that shouldn't discourage you at all. It's just why I wouldn't go with Fiverr. If you're getting the results you want, nothing better than that.

As for a niche you could market in, I'd say try out a few niches first. You may be passionate about a niche, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can market in that niche or even create content in that niche.

    Pick the top 3 niches:
Weight loss, self improvement, make money

Then, go into the sub-niches (check out the 'categories' on Ezinearticles and Clickbank to help you out) and pick one - any one.

See what's the search volume's like, what are others doing in the niche, is there a forum you can join and market in?

Take it from there. Setting up a blog is drop dead simple with Wordpress. Do that, get some info about SEO and drive traffic to your site.

Motivation comes from results. The grit, the drive comes from inside. You have all the grit and drive you need. Motivation will come in eventually.

Do something, anything. At the end of the day, if you're able to say, THIS is what I did today, you'll be motivated to continue that the next day.

Worst thing you could do is to NOT do anything. Second worse could be that it doesn't work.

If that's so, throw it out and jump to the next niche. Focus on one niche and thing at a time and take it from there.

*wakes up next morning to find awesome replies!*

Thanks everyone for such insightful and helpful posts. I wanted to do the multi-quote thing so I could respond to specific points, but that could cause a mile-high post, lol.

One thing I do want to point out, per pbarbanes reply, is my passion outside of IM. There are actually two:
      1. Music (songwriting/performing/recording)
      2. Website design.
I made careers out of both, and quite successfully. My reasons for them no longer being a main source of income are moot here, but suffice it to say it wasn't from a lack of talent and skills. So I keep bouncing it around in my mind, what could I offer to people regarding those two things, that is new and fresh? They are the two things I can talk most authoritatively about in my life.

Varnita, you mentioned that being passionate about a niche may not mean I can market or even create content in those niches. So true! After all, music and Web design are already well covered both online and off. But there are many things I do enjoy, and can't think of them "under pressure". So picking top niches and then looking at sub-niches is a good suggestion.

WillR, your post is quite helpful as well, with the suggestion of finding forums - or not finding them - to give me an idea of what's worth pursuing.

And everyone else's suggestions and words of encouragement are much appreciated as well. Today is a new day.

Joel the best bit of advice I can give you is to take a step back and think, really think what do you want to do?

Do you want to be a product creator, have a host of niche sites selling Amazon products, selling gigs on Fiverr, earn money blogging...the list goes on and on.

Once you have an idea of what you'd like to do you start planning out "How" to do it. Once you have these 2 things in order you'll have a far greater chance of succeeding. The thing with IM is that there are so many ways to make money that people often get lost along the way and stumble from one to another without giving each one enough time to work...

If you pick and stick with one core area in the beginning you'll do well for yourself, so put that thinking hat on and make a plan

That's exactly what one of my main problems has been all along. And it's always been because I wanted to make money right now. I know better than that, but some opps sound like quick money, enough to build up some reinvestment capital, and then I can work on something more solid and lasting. But yes, what I actually need right now is to just bypass the quickie stuff and latch onto the solid one, and let it happen over the weeks and months that it realistically will take.

The Google sniper 2.0 you purchased is actually a good course. I will advise you go through that course again because its going to teach you how to build sniper sites. In fact, building sniper sites is how I make a living online. That method is really simple and works!

Millions of people are making money in as much niches as you could possibly think of.

Have you ever stopped to realize the problem might be you?

That's not meant to be a dig. I'm just saying when you jump from idea to idea you are taking your problems with you.

Choose 1 thing that people are already making money in. Work on that 1 idea until you make money.

You are spreading yourself out so thin you are just trying the same tired approaches each time. If you just spent all your time trying to make 1 thing work, 1 thing there are people making money in, then you'd already be successful.

    Hi Joel,
First of all welcome back to IM. All of us here on WF share only one goal and that is to gain success in this IM Arena. However having said that these are not easy waters to navigate as you have experienced it as well.

Unfortunately the IM looks more lucrative than it ACTUALLY is. And that is the truth that no one dares to face. I know people will tell you very warm welcome and best of luck . Buy this and buy that.

But from my own experience I am telling you IM is full of more traps than actual success. In 1999 things were different. No one knew about IM business and people who started in that time (using correct methods -.i.e not chasing the millionaire dream blindly) had great success.

However things have changed now you will probably find a 100 times more people in this arena than ever before and unfortunately this number is increasing with each passing day as more people enter IM with their millionaire dreams.

I know it is too flashy and lucrative for any one to pass on. However I repeat again DONT enter in IM if you are not prepared to work hard for it. Face the facts that you won't make millions within one year. Take it like any other business you start from scratch and gradually build from there.

It takes huge effort and plenty of time to be successful in this business. I am talking about hours and hours of hard work and years of dedication. But if you are willing to put into it then welcome. However if you have quit your job just to earn millions within next 3 months. Then Please GET BACK to your job.

Now let's come to final part. Money and success is the only factor that motivates you in this IM business. So if you want to earn money then you have to be motivated. And FINALLY Please DON'T buy any WSO or B.S PRODUCT LIKE GSniper or anything else. I know people will tell you differently and these products will promise you thousands of dollars in one day.

But the fact is that none of them work. 99.99% of them contain ripped off information that you can find easily over the web. Start your own business. Don't worry if niche is not as hot. Not every one on Internet searches to buy weight loss product. Start something that motivates an inspires you. And remember the web hosting and domain are only investment that you require.

PM me your skype if you want to discuss more.

    Thanks for reading,
    Ahmar.

Sounds like a lot of starting and not finishing. I would suggest leaving the forum, stop buying info products and just make a decision on what you are going to make and spend 40 hours trying to make it. You will learn a lot doing that. If you can't do it then it's the wrong game for you.

A number of things I tried, and was actually making progress in, they disappeared right out from under me. The ones that didn't disappear, the timing was wrong as I ran out of resources to continue. And others just ended up not being for me. So yes, I've been around the block a few times, but not as a flighty gold seeker looking to make millions overnight. I've always know that can't happen.

I'm not out to make millions, especially in a short time. I only need to replace my current $1,300/mo. income as a start. Once I do that, anything else is a bonus.

And no, that's not a typo. It really is only $1300 per month. My wife and I live in her mother's house, who passed away 3 years ago. Fortunately we don't live in a high maintenance area of the world where living costs are to the moon. But $1300 is extremely hard to live on no matter how low the cost of living is.

And I do have a job, and have no intention of quitting it just to do IM.

Actually, WF and buying a couple low-priced WSO's have already steered me in a direction that will work very well for me in my current financial and health situation. So spending the past week in the forums wasn't such a bad idea.

Oh, it's the right game for me. There's a lot more to my story than I have the desire to tell, or that anyone would care to read. But I haven't stuck it out this long to simply pass the time.

Evergreen niches don't just disappear from under you, and running out of resources is an even worse excuse.

You can come up with reasons why my first post was wrong, or you can pick one thing and work until you get it right.

There's no need to go in the huff. Did you really come on here expecting people to give you the key to the kingdom?

Believe it or not, I'm actually trying to help.

You've said you had minor success for 9 years because you moved onto the next shiny object as soon as it came along. I'm just trying to get it through your skull, even though I don't think you'll listen, that you're going to have to stick to one thing and make it work.

The way it looks from here, you are just going to continue throwing sh*t at a wall and seeing what sticks. That's failed you for 9 years. You are obviously not one of the lucky ones that's going to come across something magical. You're one of the ones that's going to have to bust his balls trying to make 1 thing work.

But please continue listening to what you want to head, instead of what you must do.

I'm not exactly saying something revolutionary. I'm only saying you should choose something and work at it until you see success. Gee Wizz

Having a job can be very repetitive and does not allow an individual to grow.

This can also be said for being paid five dollars for doing quite a lot of work.

If you are desperate for some quick cash then maybe using some PLR products and uploading to Fiverr could bring in some small but steady incomes for you.

I would strongly recommend you start looking at building a list of subscribers within a niche that is always looking for solutions to problems all year-round.

At least with having your own list of subscribers you can e-mail them frequently enough to build up a relationship and further down the line you can promote affiliate product's, your own product's etc etc.

Feel free to download my free list building report below.

Have a great day and hope you find your motivation once again!
