Default How to tell how much direct traffic a site gets?

This might be a stupidly obvious question, I don't know but:

Is there any way to tell how much direct traffic a site gets?

(I mean sites that are not mine, obviously I can look at my own statistics for that)

I have scoured Alexa but I can't find anything.

Thanks for any tips,

Rebtl

The only think that I have ever seen was on ask dot com. There is a little pair of binoculars next to the site when you search it shows how much traffic the site is getting, just not sure how accurate it is. Or you can try siteanalytics.compete.com

Have you tried Google Analytics?

It's easy, it's free:

Google Analytics - Sign Up

Also, if you have Cpanel, try AWSTATS

Good luck!

I don't trust alexa.. on one of my flagship sites it gives a pretty bad impression, but my stats show a completely different story (around 6 mill a month).

If you are looking for true stats or traffic of other websites, you can try those free traffic places like Alexa and ect .. But you will never get the actual true traffic of a site unless you have direct access to their stats.

Some may disagree with this but facts are you have no idea what type of blocking methods, what type of redirects, and etc a website has and neither does those traffic sites. For example I have alexa fully 100% blocked from one of my websites and as such Alexa has me listed at like 18 million on traffic but fact is the site gets over 100 unique per day that actually does access the website.

So to answer your question you can try

Alexa the Web Information Company
Quantcast - Home
https://my.compete.com

But it is only going to really give you estimates as these site have no way to track what is installed and running on a server.. Keep in mind some people actually block sites such as the above from even accessing their servers or they redirect the access to another location.

I love compete - that site is addictive.

Yeah, it's definitely not pinpoint accurate - but you can get a very good idea how successful a site is.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I know how google and alexa and quantcast work, but my original question was

is there any way to tell how many DIRECT visits a site gets?

by that I mean, a way for me to see (even if it is estimated) the number of visits the sites gets by people going to their browser and typing in the site name rather than search engine or referral traffic.

Again unless you have access to their actual server stats you will never be able to tell this. This is impossible for the simple reason as I said above, you or no other script, website, software has any idea what that person may have installed on their servers.

The only thing that gives the true actual stats of any server is the actual raw access logs, AWSTATS is great but even it is limited. Raw Access Logs (which you have in cpanel) is the only way to tell where every single bit of traffic is coming from.

Thanks Steve, but everyone is missing my question.

I know how to track my own stats,

I want to know if there is anyway to track the number of direct visits of SOMEONE elses site?

Rebtl - quantcast.com and compete.com can give you indications of what other sites get. Just remember, they're indications - not necessarily close/accurate to the real numbers. (Just compare your own numbers to their estimates of your numbers and you'll see what I mean).
