Check out wordpress, has a ton of customization so you can pretty much turn it into whatever you want.

Has tons of free themes great paid themes awesome plugins it's amazing for someone whose just starting out and pros alike

Can you be more specific to what type of website you would like to create? Blog, sales page, membership, etc...

You need a domain name and hosting to start with.
Then you should decide whether you want to create a website from scratch or use WordPress for that purpose with an appropriate theme.

There are tons of free HTML tutorials if you want to build your website yourself, and tons of WP tutorials, too. Google search results can give you a headache.

Don't worry if your first creation isn't perfect. Just do it. Set up that site, and improve it later on. Are you bad at it? Then be bad at it! You don't have to be perfect!

Have a look at sites that deal with the same topic as you would like yours to deal with. Look at their layouts, find out what theme they use if it's a WordPress site, and build yours mimicking theirs first, and customizing it and personalizing it as you progress.

Everyone has already said it but I'll still chime in and say Wordpress is very easy to learn.

I'd say start with creating one of the web 2.0 properties like Wordpress.com. Once you gain more experience, you can just sign up for hosting like at hostgator baby accounts, they'll pretty much guide you through the rest of the process.

Here is the best way to start a website hands down.

1) Godaddy.com for a domain easy to use great support
2) Hostgator for hosting, I use the unlimited domains and bandwidth
3) Point Domain to your hostgator name servers
a) get your name servers from hostgator
b) call godaddy up and have them help you set up the nameservers
4) Login to your cpanel on your domain and install wordpress with QuickInstall.

Word press and Jumla are good platforms for cms but if you want ecommerce systems then after buying domain and hosting install oscommerce or mgento, first read the system requirements for any system of your choice then buy hosting.

Clearly, most everyone agrees WordPress is the easiest way to go.

I would just add that if you want really professional looking themes, themeforest.net is probably the best place to find them.

If you plan to build a lot of sites and have a very low spending budget, I'd say go with elegantthemes.com, which gives you access to tons of themes for a low price. I don't like these themes quite as much in terms of style (as the ones I can find on themforest), but they do the job.

I would go for lynda tutorial... follow them religiously for at least 2 weeks.. trial and errors.. Trust me you will be proud of what you can accomplish after getting at least the basic knowledge. Any issue you get; just google it and you will find the answer as chances are that you are not the only new person using wordpress and some might have already encounter such potential issues.

we on the same track here.Am using wordpress, its amazing the plugins and numerous plugins,you need very little information on webdesign and html.Although you may need a little bit of knowledge on CSS to modify the themes.You can google and get info or visit the w3schools or csstricks websites

I think you should just have a look around at different CMS programs and find what suits you best. Maybe play around for a bit and then by a domain name. You can only learn through trial and error.

Wordpress is easy but there are tools on the WF that are 1 click installs
that will save you tons of time as well!

Wordpress is better done sooner than later. Starting a website with wordpress is a LOT better than having to convert your 300 page website from "normal" to wordpress and all the while sending out apologies to your regular customers when it gets messed up.

Use Yahoo Sitebuilder. It's a good one. To make your website go live though you will have to sign up for their $9.95/month webhosting plan. Worth it though.

I have a love/hate relationship with Wordpress.

If you choose Wordpress...

Don't go plugin crazy. Some plugins are poorly coded. And plugins can break when you update Wordpress and can then wreak havoc on your site in all kinds of unpleasant ways.

I've had plugins bring down my site, force me to update all of my posts, suspend my account because of eating up my disk quota, bring the ire of my hosting company for using too many resources, and even break my affiliate money links.

And since so many plugins are free, there's not a lot of motivation for the author to rapidly issue a fix.

I'm not saying never use plugins. Just don't go crazy with them. Use only a few which are reputable and updated frequently, and then keep an eye on them.

Be on top of Wordpress' security updates. I've had all of my sites hacked because I was lax in updating them with security updates.

Believe me, it's a headache recovering your Wordpress site after it's been hacked. And it's an absolute nightmare if you have a slew of sites that have been infected.

And if you haven't been regularly backing up your database and files, you could be screwed and lose your site.

For me, every time I start a new website, I ask myself if I can get away with doing this site as a flat file site, not a database driven one. I like the speed of layout and page loading, alone, when I design my website on my computer rather than online through a CMS like Wordpress.

But there's no doubt that Wordpress is one of the easiest way to build a website without needing any html skills.

Consider paying for a theme that converts. Always remember that Wordpress is primarily a blogging engine that is not very well optimized for conversions. There's too much going on in the top and sides of Wordpress layouts.

You've already got a great free CMS platform, and there are a ton of attractive free themes available, but consider for your free platform paying for a theme optimized for conversions.

If you're monetizing your site with AdSense, consider buying a theme that will give you a higher click-through-rate like CTR Theme.

Or if you're building an affiliate site or selling your own product, consider paying for a theme that's optimized for creating landing pages, like Optimize Press, Profits Theme, or Marketers Delight.

People today trust a lot on Wordpress as it gives a lot of options to create what is in your mind !!!

What is the purpose of creating the website? Do you want to make money with it? Do you want to sell it afterwards? Will it be a free/personal blog?

If you want to monetize your site, you have to decide where to get traffic, that's an essential part.

These are some traffic generation methods to consider:

SEO
Video marketing
Forum marketing
PPC
PPV
CPM
Blog commenting
Guest posting
and many others

Then you have to decide how to monetize your traffic.

Consider the following:

AdSense or a similar platform
CPA offers - either rebills/high-payout offers or low payout offer, such as zip or email submits
Amazon marketing
Clickbank

What you should also do is build a list along the way, so when getting the traffic, try to build a list of subscribers that you can market to for life. That's probably the only way to build a sustainable business online.

As you can see, it's not as simple as it might seem at first glance. The important thing is to find a targeted traffic source and connect the traffic with the right offer/product.

In my opinion the best tool to make website is Notepad++ but you need to have skills for using it. Offcourse the easiest way is to make your first website with some ready to go scripts. I recommend wordpress or some blog network.

I totally agree with Wordpress, I took a year to learn Joomla, and ya great tool lots of advanced options, BUT Wordpress is by far one of the best tools of the trade. Not a huge fan of GoDaddy unless you absolutely have to have someone help you from them, I have had way too many issues with GoDaddy because not one to take 10 min on a 2min fix on InMotion Hosting. NOW for all those newbies whom have no idea how to build a site, I always point them to Weebly.com for free sites, if you want more advanced options then WORDPRESS all the way.
