    If you think it's worth.
How can we develop more than!
Over time. What's new and happening, and maybe replace the old thing.
All you need is a dream and determination to do it.

I think you need a lot of investment, the days of a social site are gone. You can only succeed if you have a very iconoclastic imagination.

Be realistic. You are not going to be the next Facebook.

But you can create a useful tool that provides a unique social networking experience that is not offered anywhere else.

      As mentioned above.

Find a 'NEED' within a niche that needs or would benefit from a social community.

Or just simply create a page on FB and build a community that way. Much cheaper.

However a niche specific forum may work.

lol you must not be a programmer.
in realty the programming under fb is poor and the programming in twitter is even worst.

Make the next social site? I would not try too hard. Make your next site social? Yes! Making a site as social as you can (pushing people to share content and engage) is a brilliant way to get popularity, and with Googles latest updates, climb the rankings!

It depends upon your purpose/intentions. Why do you have a new social site. I suggest make a market research and feasibility study, so that, it will not be a waste of time, effort and money.

It would only be worth it if:

    1. It is a niche network.
    2. No other social site exists in that niche.
    3. You are comfortable with setting up a MASSIVE site and running it.
    4. You have deep pockets or a lot of time to spread the word through relevant channels.

Personally, my advice would be forget it. Monetising social networks is something even facebook has failed at mostly.

Build networking into your site by encouraging people to make comments, share ideas send private messages to others that share common interest.

What is your dream for others?
    How big is it?
What value do you want to add to them?
How passionate are you about it?

    Don't give up your dream.

There were other networking sites before facebook and there will be several after. Just make yours a more focused one.

anything is possiable but you are going to need one unique idea that stands your site out from the rest, like few people have said above brainstorm, dont just go rushing into getting it up and running, research have a look round all the social sites there and see if and what kind of features people would like to see on the current social site that there on and then use them ideas to brainstorm see if you can create something that they are looking for.

Honestly, if you're going to make a social site just like facebook, there's a high chance that your site will fail pretty fast. Obviously, Facebook is doing very well and it's really hard to beat something that is already stuck in peoples' minds.

In short, it is not that advisable to start a social networking site nowadays; UNLESS, you have an extremely good new formula that will certainly attract people to join or have a certain formula that will target specific groups (and they must be huge groups, be it quantity or quality).

Of course, you may or may not spend a lot of money in this social site but that all depends on the formula and strategies that you have prepared.

There are actually many social network websites that people don't know about.

If you do decide to make one, you have to compete with the small social networks and also the big one's like Facebook and Google+.

If you're looking for some small monetization from a limited amount of people, then I'm guessing it wouldn't be all that bad.

If you're trying to compete with the likes of Facebook and Google+. You would have to make a social network ahead of its time and do something completely innovative and different.

    Good luck!

Till what time you think you can keep your project away from money generation. The final idea is to earn income out of any project you undertake...

Also keep in mind, if it will not be in race, it will loose the game. Delicious, Digg, Reddit, FB, Twitter arent they Social enough, so you need to be different from all of them !!!

Now, I got some stories for ya lol.
I planned one and was attacked.

I can tell you this business as we are taught is not the way it plays out.
A few things I experienced when I was planning and working on my social site.
    Total Internet Outages.
    Followed at least 5 times.
    Bank Problems
Problems with my used book business, which was done through Amazon. (my sales went to 0)
You will notice that companies like Google and Facebook take and use any ideas you make public (basically anything you type or say anywhere online)
    Hosting Issues
    ISP issues.

That's all I can think of right now, but if you can make it past all of that then you have a good shot.

What really stopped me was when I re-discovered Internet Marketing. I noticed that IM professionals were quietly making more money than any facebook ever did with less problems. I noticed this during the time researching platforms available to build upon. They can all handle basically 500k users easily depending on your hardware. If a marketer is charging 300 a month for at least 500k users how much are they making? And that's not even including other products they are selling.

If you do this and I recommend you do it if it's in your heart to do it.
Look at something like 60hr on avg for programmers, something like 200 to 500k and that's if you are also a programmer.
Then price your servers and don't forget to look at chat servers if you're going to offer chat.

Just some things to think about.
May the force be with you. .

It was basically in general with a lean towards the intellectual crowd.
I did some programming from scratch, and some in case we needed to
go with a platform. I felt that if we needed to go that way php fox, or social engine
        would be the platform.

Btw, most likely Facebook is built on the Social Engine platform, believe it or not.
The reason for the platform is that you have to worry about loading times, speed and many have already worked that out.

Never got to the point of the programming, because I figured 200k was out of range. When I realized the additional costs, I went with crowd funding through indiegogo.com. I never ran any ads as we never really got it all off the ground.

You can read more about it here, but keep in mind that I had to be careful with how much information I put out because I knew all the big boys were watching.

Remember SOPA and all that, I believe the big boys created all that, because they were aware that I would be using copyrighted musics and movies to promote my project, similar to the old Max Headroom, if you remember that show, but better. You will see down the road, because I will be creating that same type of promotion when I start IM.

It's all on the back burner now, because I think more money is Internet Marketing, but I will tell you this much. I already see it, I see the big buildings that I own, the people around me, so it's not like a dream, or wish, it's like I already know it's going to happen. Maybe not with ConsciousMinds maybe with IM or some other niche, but I see it.

I think you could spend alot less time and money by building a niche website and trying to monetize it. Imagine the cost and people you would have to network with just to launch your social site from the ground. It would be majorly expensive.

It's a mindset like this that will ensure you never succeed. Never convince yourself that you can't do something. If Zuckerberg said "well, **** it myspace is too huge" then he'd probably have a 5 figure IT job right now working for someone who dared to dream.

No, Google would have create a similar site as youtube, but they knew the domain was great, so no other alternative to buy it

Simple answer. It depends on how good of a programer you are and whether you want to only have a social networking site. Just to have a purely social orientated site, these days without a online magazine, forum or online shop to add to the site i think you could struggle with the other compertision. If you however, focused the website to either an individual ethnic or social group or added additional features to the site you could achieve success. However, on the other hand if you are not a programmer, i hardly expect you to make a site to the capabilities of facebook. Secondly in today's market you would have to spend a lot of money on advertising, to even stand a chance against the other social networks or at least provide something new. By the sounds of it, due to the simplicity of the question i am assuming you are not a programmer and probably new to web design. I always get the same question, however, for social bookmarking sites in the design forums, as people seem to think these kind of site are a gold train, and in a year they can be earning a couple of grand a month. In reality you probably have more chance of winning the lottery than designing a successful social networking site without programing knowledge. So i suggest you invest your money on the lottery instead.

It depends on you whether you will make a social site or not. But surely there is a good chance of doing something big with social site.

Here is my plan you can follow...
    1. target a specific niche.
    2. make a social site and ask people related to those niche to join ( you may need to work offline )
    3. If you work offline to manage visitors you will be amazed to see the end result.
    4. Use Wordpress and Buddy Press to decrease your initial cost at this moment.

    Hope this helps.

you should check out some of the out of the box social site platforms, you will be amazed at what they have done. in comparison to a facebook, those platforms are like star wars compared to facebooks horse and buggy. i mean floating menus and all.

Look at the bright side, the number of people saying it is impossible is encouraging. The competition is fierce, but that will keep many people from trying. That can only increase your chances.

I say give it a shot at the very least. The worst can happen is that you won't be the next Facebook or just complete flop. Big Deal! As if people don't see set backs in other form of businesses.

My suggestion will be to come up with an angle or a twist that can be interesting. Not design/programming side of things, but concept wise. And put it in front of some people and see if they like it. I am talking about genuinely liking the idea, not forced or fake "like" we see on some social networks.

If you can find few hundred people who like your idea, chances are there will be more like them. I know, easier said than done and mostly theory. That is why the reward is so high for them who can make it.

I completely agree with Walter Parrish though, that everyone will be watching. And if they can copy you, they will. You have to keep that in mind when you make your moves.

    All the best

There are a million ideas for social sites just begging to be developed. History must surpass history. It's only a matter of time before FaceBook is old news. It happens to all major companies eventually.

But the truth that I can see is not to develop yourself into a corner.

This can be avoided by not paying attention to what the other guy is doing. I've seen so many social sites only do it a little bit better, and they have short term success as a result and fade away after about 2 years.

Many would disagree with me but,

      Twitter,
      FaceBook
      Pinterest

These are all sites that people are still using, but the message is "can someone do this better now?"...

      Look what happened to MySpace.

You have to keep that in mind when you make your moves.

lol most of the people are wimps. seriously.
the competition is not as fierce as many think, their still watching me. lol
i just started to work on my fanpages and the req is to have 25 fans before you can get the name in your link. i guess i got carte blanche for the domain i was using for the social site, no 25 fans for me.

anyway, trust me most of these guys are Smoke and Mirrors when you look at what they do. unless of course you actually believe that fb has close to a billion active users. lol and some kid created it all in his dorm room.

basically and i say this with info from the inside, google and fb are social experiments created by major corps. no government as many people think or any of that, the thing that people fail to understand is that these major corps are larger and stronger than whole nations and are powers unto themselves.

I don't think its a good idea now. I think creating a page in Face book or a circle in Google + is very enough nowadays.

Well I started a social site about a year ago. My site is in a niche that did not exist at the time. When I began I had no idea what I was doing, but my site became very popular. So popular, that after learning everything I have about running a network/social site, I have opened a turnkey social network company. I create exclusive social networks that are turnkey and ready to go. I only release around 25 every 3 months, and they are snapped up within 2 days. I offer training and support, and I guess my turnkey social site has become my second social network.

Anyhow, I enjoy my work because building a community is alot like being on facebook all day with your friends. and getting paid for it

I am pretty sure starting a site as popular as facebook will eventually happen to one unspecting person sooner or later, BUT... it will most likely happen as an accident.

That is kind of how social networks work. It's similar to being in highschool. 10 years ago the jocks where the happening social network, they where the popular ones, but go to school today and find the nerdy, save the planet kids are the ones to be apart of.

As times change, social networks change, there is ALWAYS a place for another network. People want to connect, people have different life experiences happening right now, IE some are dealing with weight issues, infedelity, some are dealing with invisible illnesses such as chrohns disease and they all have one thing in common, they look for justification online, they look to connect and discuss these things online.

    Just my thoughts

    Hey there,

I know social sites are not my thing, but I would say you could definitely make a good living by having a social site.

My recommendation though is that you go VERY NICHE and dont make it a general site like facebook.

Make it something like a community involved in a certain topic, otherwise you will never gain the traction and regular use that facebook has.

Think about it, 1billion people use facebook. Thats a crap load of people.

If you start something similar do you think they will migrate their activity to your unknown site? not a kittens chance in a piranhas tank my friend...

But if you create a site about how to keep your kitten from falling into your piranha tank.. then you have a good site on your hands because they will use it more often!

    Cheers

You're going to need a whole lot of money to be invested in it. You're going up against the big boys like facebook, twitter, etc. I'm not saying that it's impossible but you definitely need a plan to make it work.

I have worked for a company for years and we were looking to build "communities" around a specific software. EXTREMELY difficult. I went to the Community Unconference in Portland and heard the community managers from Get Satisfaction and Zappos speak. Hugely enlightening. And most of the things they told not to do - we had already done. It is NOT intuitive.

So I'm not saying don't do it - what I am saying is listen to and get around some of the folks who have done it or better yet hire a community manager that has had some serious success.

Whether or not it's a "good" idea is based on timing I suppose. If the business model is solid then it could be worth it. But personally, I would rather focus on something with less competition. It's also hard to monetize some of the social sites as people are going their with "social" intent instead of "buying" intent.
