Is This Internet Marketing Mindset Causing You To Lose Sales?

Many people forget that people who market products where the end benefit is "how to make more money online" are in the minority when it comes to online sellers and buyers.

I was in my bathroom, getting ready for the day. I was looking around the bathroom and came up with items that people buy quite often.

However, examples of websites selling these items are never given as far as examples of how to sell online. Nor does anyone ask questions about how to best sell these items. It seems the items asked about are products whose benefit to the buyer is to "make more money" whether it be information or software.

For example, items I saw around me that people buy: Do you sell any of the following?

toothbrushes
grooming supplies
bath products like soap and shampoo
makeup products
socks and underwear

I've never seen a post about someone asking for advice on getting better sales for items such as these.

I read many posts asking about advice that deals with the following.

What headlines work best, what color should the headline be, how to make the best squeeze page, how to write the story of why you are selling the product, how to state the guarantee, how to create scarcity, How to address the sales letter, how to sign the sales letter, how to write the P.S. etc.

Isn't it possible that only some people have been conditioned to buy from offers presented in this way? Mostly the people who are buying "how to make more money online" stuff.

When you purchase a product providing the promised benefit of "this product will help you make more money online", most of the products are presented with a salesletter. Big Red Headline - Dear so and so....letter, signature, P.S. P.P.S etc.

And, some people, over years of being a consumer, just will not buy from an offer presented this way. They have been conditioned to reject an offer presented this way. They would rather buy from a traditional online store model. Or a website which is not just a direct salesletter.

Sometimes it seems some people have forgotten that most people online have never heard of the big name internet marketers. Most people are not buying products about how to make money online, how to make money from google adwords, how to make money writing articles, new software that will let you find the most profitable keywords, etc.

    Excellent Post!

what I've been thinking about that is that most of us act following an example. As we learn from people who sell "how to make money online" and we see their tactics, we mimic what we see. It is a human nature.

If an Underwear Marketer puts out a report, ebook or video course how he made millions selling underwear, many people will start selling underwear.

Yes, sometimes we must STOP and think about other products and niches to apply what we know.

The only difference with the "make money" niche, is that we are used to "pay" to learn. We are used to "get sold", in fact, we want people to sell us stuff. that doesn't happen in many other niches.

that's why it is relatively easy to create a 20 pages report, get a dozen of reviews and make a WSO and earn a couple of thousands in a very short time.

that's very unrealistic in many other niches.

What do you guys think about this?

    Cheers!

That's certainly a great point and reminder about looking outside of this
relatively tiny (and really quite weird!) market.

However, be careful over the presumption about how people are conditioned
to buy and their adversity to "sales letters"...

Businesses have sold billions of dollars of products offline through the very
same direct marketing methods over decades. The internet did not suddenly
invent the sales letter (though it may gradually change it a bit).

What the smart marketers do is use their internet marketing and direct
marketing skills to help sell many of the items you listed.

Nice reminder about the bigger picture though.

      Best,
      Adam

that's why it is relatively easy to create a 20 pages report

That's why I am finding it so difficult to decide a price for my 24 page, 10,000 word report on a subject that has never been covered before as far as I know! All these cloned reports simply devalue everybody's work.

If I had put as much filler and fluff into my report, not to mention the empty spaces and affiliate links, my report would have been 48 pages.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more

Actually I really like the idea of promoting consumer products but we always hear "sell things people want don't sell them what they need". I have only recently started writing reviews and articles to consumer products and will know soon enough if this is just a way for people to get info on something they are going to WalMart to buy or if I can actually convert them online.

Check Amazon and Linkshare and Commission Junction for some ideas

To get even more specific...direct sales have worked in plenty of other areas than "how to make more money online"

2 examples are The showtime rotisserie oven by Ron Popeil and The Snuggie.

But, if you go to the Ronco website...The "Formula" that is taught so much:

Red Headline, Dear (target market), begin with a story, benefits, risk reversal, tell why you came up with the price you did, signature, P.S. etc....

...Is not followed. In fact it looks more like a traditional website in the style of an online store like buy.com or even amazon than the standard online salesletter one finds for the next great "how to profit online" product.

The website where they sell the snuggie, violates plenty of "salesletter" rules that are not taken as gospel by people who follow the internet marketers who teach them.

Now, these people certainly know how to do direct marketing. I think Ron Popeil would qualify as someone you would call a successful direct marketer. So, does he just not know how to sell the right way online?

Or could it be that his way works just as well if not better?

It's easy to become like sheep and just follow along and put blinders on to what most people on the internet are used to seeing when they make a purchase.

...most people online buy items on websites other than your own.

Sometimes just a large red headline at the top of the page that internet marketing products seem to all use today gets people's "hype alert" up if they are not conditioned to expect it.

Whereas, when a new product comes out by an internet marketer who is well known, you almost expect the headline to be big red lettering. Because you have seen it so many times, you have become conditioned to it and it have learned to buy from websites such as these.

People in other niches, like...makeup, grooming products, even socks, have been conditioned to buy from sites that are very different than this.

I think that a lot of Internet marketing techniques work well for a wide variety of things, including commodity products.

And, some people, over years of being a consumer, just will not buy from an offer presented this way. They have been conditioned to reject an offer presented this way.
Those people may be rare. And, there may be more people that claim they are among that group but will still end up buying products from such sites.

They would rather buy from a traditional online store model. Or a website which is not just a direct salesletter.
I don't know that I agree with that fully. I mean, I'm not going to buy socks from a one-page salesletter site, unless they are very specific socks for something. I agree that a one-page salesletter in and of itself is not the best method of selling all products. But, as many Internet marketers learn, you have to present your product in the way that best suits your target audience. That doesn't mean that techniques used in one-page salesletters aren't applicable to other types of products as well.

Let's say you're buying shampoo online. If you know the brand and type you want, you want to go to a site, find that shampoo, drop it in your cart and buy it. If you know what you want, you are probably just looking for the best value, which will be the lowest price among sites that appear trustworthy. In this case, you've already been pre-sold on that product.

So, for the Internet marketer selling that product online, what they need to do is let you know they carry that brand at a reasonable price. They don't need to explain to you the benefits and so on, which is one of the parts of a good salesletter: selling you on the product's benefits to you. That part is already done.

And many online stores do just that. They are betting that you already know the benefits of a product, and are competing to be the place you buy that or those products from.

But, let's say you have people coming to your shampoo or sock website to buy XYZ shampoo or socks. What if you have your own store brand that is comparable? What if it is of equal quality? What if it's at a lower price? (And, as it's your brand, you have a higher profit margin on your store brand than the XYZ brand?) You would rather the customer buy that product than the XYZ brand, right?

How do you do that? Well, you might have an attention-drawing headline. You might have copy explaining the benefits. You might have a comparison chart. In other words, you might have the content of a one-page salesletter, but presented a little differently. Same goal though, right? To sell them on your product over the other one. Sure, you'll sell them either one, but you want them to buy your own brand.

A typical eCommerce site may be like a typical store. Here are the products. We have cheap prices. Please buy from us. You know? They compete with prices and coupons and special offers and such. You go there, you pick what you want, and you buy it.

But, what if you have a question? In many typical stores, clerks and salespeople and stuff are often clueless teenagers. They may be older, but they're often not knowledgeable about the products in the store. They can tell you what aisle the socks are in. They can do a price check on your shampoo selection. But, which shampoo is the best shampoo for your hair? They probably don't know. Maybe they'll grab the bottle off the shelf and read the label for you--something you've already done! But, that's about it. And that's how a lot of eCommerce sites are run. You want something? Fine, you can buy it, but you'll have to depend on other sites for information and comparisons.

A better eCommerce site is run like a better store. They have products, but they also have salespeople knowledgeable about those products. They can do more than read the packaging for information; they've been educated on the products. They've used the products, if not for themselves then at least in training sessions. They can tell you which shampoo is best for oily hair, which is best for dry hair and which is best for that hair that just can't seem to make up its mind. The eCommerce site will have product comparisons, reviews, additional information, and so on. You can find out the benefits of the product, which will work better for your needs. They may have live help or online assistance.

If you're pre-sold on a product, you can add it to your cart, checkout and be done! If you need more information, though, it will be all right there for you. You don't have to leave the site to find out more about a specific product.

You may not see what we think of as Internet marketing techniques, but they're there!

On a superficial level, things may look different. But, when you dig deeper, the techniques that Internet marketers use, they're there. There are commodity-product sites using affiliate marketing. They're using article marketing. They're using press releases. They're using the various techniques that get discussed on WF every day. Maybe they're not asking the questions. Maybe they're just lurking, gleaning what information they can. You may not hear from them, but they're here.

The typical one-page salesletter site doesn't necessarily have the benefit of a customer already sold on the product. So, that salesletter has to perform a different function than the Popeil or Snuggie sites. Those products have been presold to customers in the TV ads. Breakdown the TV ads, and it's essentially a salesletter!

As others have mentioned, Internet marketing techniques are not all new to the Internet. Many techniques have been around for decades, perhaps longer! Much longer. Think of the traveling salesman, standing in the middle of town, announcing the benefits of his product. Some were selling snake oil; some were selling useful goods. But they grabbed attention, as headlines do. They talked about the product's benefits, as salesletters do. They appealed to the customers' emotions to help sell the product, as salesletters do. They gave a limited time offer, as many salesletters do. In short, they were "Internet marketers" before the Internet was ever dreamed up!

Infomercials aren't much different from those one-page salesletters either!

Internet marketing is just marketing on the Internet. It works because it speaks to the way most people buy. Sure, everyone knows people that say they won't buy from "those" types of ads or people or websites, but people do, including some of those who say they don't! Usually, when people say they don't buy from such places, it's because they haven't seen a product that appealed to them.

But, present them with a product that they just can't live without, and they'll get pulled in hook, line and sinker by one of "those" places!

Jamawebinc, I'm not sure of the point you are trying to make here. If I'm mistaken, I apologize, If I'm correct you are wondering why you don't see more posts on "How can I sell more______? And the more ______ could be : TV's, CD's, Food Supplements, Clothes of all shapes sizes and price ranges, etc, etc, etc. First of all, Internet Marketing is the marketing of goods, services and information across the world using the Internet as the medium for the sales and distribution of these goods , services or Information.

The Forum you are on is one of the best places to discuss issues related to " How to Make Money Online " which is basically a business to business type Niche. It explores
and provides education, research, tools, systems and strategies to not hundreds, but millions of people an affordable way to learn and earn extra money and build a foundation for eventual Internet Business Success.

There are many marketers who have chosen this Niche because of the business to business nature of "If you provide something that will help streamline, automate or
increase their advantages over the competition", It is a pretty fair bet they will have
a ready to buy market that does not dry up!

I know for a fact there are many marketers on this forum who do business in this Niche as well as health, financial, stock markets, self help, and many more. I think it was billnad who suggested Linkshare, check them out, they have a lot of retail oriented vendors ( low commisions ).

There are many good "Retail, E-Commerce sites out there, and related forums. You just need to do some "Google research". Hope this helps.
