Website in Google #1 but no sales, please help

When I do a search for my main keyword my website the one in my signature is No. 1 in Google out of 1,080,000. Even though it is no. 1 I somehow do not seem to be getting much traffic. Can anyone suggest what I could do to make my website more attractive or any other comments are welcome to help me with my business.
Thanks
Jackie

    Jackie,

You're falling into the trap of trying to do too much, and most of it
    the wrong way...

Your website at the moment is one great big cluttered noise. It provides motivation
only to click back to google and look elsewhere. That's partly because
you're stuffing too much in - quantity over quality.

Also - not sure what keyword you're targeting, but if it's "cheap business
hosting blog" (for "cheap business hosting" you're nowhere) then you're
not going to get many visitors...however high you are on google.

If you're a War Room member, look into threads like Chris Rempel's conduit
    post.

And don't give up! Everyone who is anyone made all the mistakes you
    might be making right now.

    Good luck,
    Adam

It always seemed to me that website hosting is nearly impossible to sell. Think about it - people who know how to set up a website surely know about affiliate programs, so they all buy through their links. Still, when people are looking to buy hosting they also look for coupon codes. Do a search for "hostgator coupons" or "bluehost coupons" and you will see how competitive it is with everyone screaming if you buy through my link send me your receipt and i will paypal you a rebate.

Yes, NOW I know trying to sell web hosting is very competitive. I wanted to quit but since I had made 3 sales so far I do not want to. It is my first web business and it seems so frustrating that I have got into the wrong line since it is very competitive.

      Guys thanks for the advice.

it may be even tougher then you realize...
a lot of hosting affiliate programs only pay if the person signs up and pays for a full year of hosting. If they sign up for the monthly plan - they don't pay. So you might want to double check this.

    Jackie,

If you say that the website you're talking about is the one in your signature, then I am not surprised at all...

    YOU DEFINITELY NEED A REDESIGN!

Your site, at first glance, is too confusing to convert.

Focus on offering just one thing, one offer, to your visitors. Make it absolutely clear what your site is there to do, and give them nothing else to click on but a buy button or an opt-in form.

I am not surprised that you are not making any sales. The site is confusing. I suggest that you choose 10 hosting companies or less instead of 16. When you make a review page I suggest that you keep it simple.

I have a landing page that promotes web hosting and it consists only of one page. It has short well-written paragraphs on each web hosting company and the conversion rates are good.

Why does my landing page work better than yours?

Yours is to complex. When a user steps onto your site he will become confused and probably leave the site.

When a user comes to my site he will see the web hosting company's name with a short review paragraph on its side and he will most likely click on the link to visit the company.

Just make your site simpler and more good looking.

    1) Remove those adsense blocks! You exchange xx dolars with xx cents with those ads.

    2) Go find a clean wordpress template. The current one is a bit cluttered.

    3) Modify the template, use excerpts instead of full posts on homepage - or find a template that already does it.

    4) Re-evaluate your keyword. If you're #1 in Google for a term searched only 10 times a month, it simply means you are not in google...

    Hi Jackie,

I didn't even look at the site, but, as a marketer with experience under different pen names, I can give you some sound advice. Ready?

First, pay attention to what ActiveTrader said... websitehosting is TOO competitive (but here's the catch) AS A FRONT END SALE.

The way you should be enrolling people into webhosting is not by trying to sell it to them but by offering something like 3-6 months FREE as a bonus to a product.

By doing so, you're changing the "FRAME" through which your visitor views your webhosting. Rather than comparing you to HostGator and deeming you the worst of the two, they are looking at it as if they just got "FREE WEBHOSTING!"

That's really how it works, my dear.

And since 3, 6 or 12 months means it has a "timer" on it, people will feel their FREE webhosting slowly slipping away. You'll be surprised. Some people will use it for a mini-site, or for storage of graphics, etc...

And if you get 20, 50 or even 100 like that, then, at the end of the free period, you get a rush of residual income anywhere from $80 to $500 per month... or even more.

WEBHOSTING, for many marketers, should be a BONUS or a THANK YOU PAGE FREE TRIAL. It takes it out of the realm of competing with hosting's big dogs.

    Good luck with that,
    Eric

The harsh reality is that if your #1 on Google for your keyword and you're not getting much traffic - it's time to move on and find better keywords.

Use google's keyword tool and make sure you use the exact match option to estimate how much traffic you're going to get.

And don't just concentrate on 1. Find five different keywords and optimize 5 different pages on your site for that keyword.

The biggest change in my affiliate marketing success was looking for words that had lots of traffic and little competition to words first looking for words that PPC advertisers are using and then figuring out which of them have good traffic and little competition.

If people are paying consistently to advertise on a word, chances are buyers are using that word.

Being in position #1 in google on this days doesn't mean thing. I have been there a few times with no sales at all. It is all about having a killer landing page related most of all to what you are selling.

I agree with the above comments about the webpage.

Did you say what your keyword phrase was?

If it is "cheap business hosting" then that gets only 1300 searches a month (according to google adwords tool) which would roughly translate to about 25 visitors a day from that page.

I'm not sure what your conversion rate is, but once you clean up the page as suggested above you will probably see more sales, then you can target other keywords with the same page design and, thus, make more sales.

She was going to get rid of it but only decided to keep it because she had 3 customers. This doesn't sound like someone who really wants to be a webhost. So, as an INTERNET MARKETER, interested in multiple streams of income, the best way, imho, to market this webhosting would be as a bonus or a backend free trial.

All this stuff about fixing up the website and using PPC is just driving her further into being a "webhost business" which she gives every impression she does not want to be. She wants to make money, not be a webhost... therefore, the webhosting should be SECONDARY to her overall business. And, therefore, a bonus or a backend free trial.

(you can thank me later. )

      Jackie,

MicroNicheFinder results indicate there are about 170 searches for your keyword every month. That's not a lot to build a business on. On the bright side.... the few searches and design issues with your site make the fact that you did get three customers pretty remarkable.

A further review of the MNF data indicates a Stength of Competition of 2 (essentially no competition) yet the the ad costs associated with your keyword are $10.92... I wonder why.

I'm not so sure that I would just abandon the project. I don't have a good idea for you.... but it seems like there must be at least some marginal opportunity there.

On thing to be careful of.... once you launch off into site redesign, do your best to retain most if not all of the text. You don't want to lose your position in the SERPs.

      Best of luck!

    hi there
checked out the site, and wow, it needs some cleaning up! Do NOT give it up, just do some housekeeping
the tag cloud on the top needs to go away or moved or something else with them
google ads, distracting, those graphics on the left are a mess, they need to be redon with better resolution.
the site looks like a teenagers personal site, totally change the design and go more professional look
if you are promoting website hosting, it needs to be clear, right now its all over the place!

Consider using a 'review' type of style, I believe there is a wordpress plug for that.
where you list the sites, add your opinion then you can link to the offer/affiliate ad or whatever is happening on there.

    So
    1) cleaner design
    2) move those tags out of the way
    3) Move those blasted google ads somewhere else, to the right
    4) Use less font styles. stick with one or two, in the same family

Good for you on getting a good ranking, for it to make you money, clean it up and look like you know what you are talking about!

Sorry to say this but its not surprising why you're not getting any sales. You really need to redesign and pick only the best offer instead of listing all the offer you've got and hope visitors will click one of them.

They will just click the back button and visit other sites that have better organised offers.

Hi, thanks again to everyone who chipped in and told me what to do.

I spent 3 miserable days trying to upgrade wordpress to the latest version and came up with a million problems. However managed to overcome all of that and managed to redo my website. I would be grateful if you could once again take a look at the redesigned website and give your comments.

As for the adsense despite being advised to remove them I did not for the simple fact that I get quite a few clicks and some of these clicks are as high as $3.40

Still have a bit more work to do though. Your suggestions will be most welcome.
    Thanks and take care

      Hi

The first thing you need to do is focus on finding keywords that have some demand and little competition, your main keyword that you are ranking for is "cheap business hosting " I assume ?

That keyword only gets about 300 exact searches per month ( 10 per day approx) according to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal so even securing the top spot will bring you very few visitors.

You need to first target the keywords that actually convert visits into sales. A lot of searches are informational, meaning users looking for informaiton rather than to buy. If you target the wrong keywords, you won't get much out of it even if you are No. 1.

Work on your conversion. How many times did you go to a website without buying anything. People make buying decisions very cautiously. So, you need to make everything easy and convincing for them.

I am rather new to this. I have a question - how do you get about targetting keywords that actually convert visits into sales. I mean how do you know which keywords would do this for you. Sorry if I sound ignorant but....

Jackie, I hope you'll be back on your feet soon.

I recommend using a different name that doesn't include the words blog or cheap, and thatdoes include the word review. Webhostreview or something along those lines.

Make your March 25 comparison grid the new home page. Each host's name should link to your page about that host. These pages should have a clean, simple and consistent layout with sections for About This Host, Review/Testimonial, Discount Coupons, and a link to Return to the Hosting Review Grid. Under About, have a few key features and a link to the hosting company. Put in big letters, "Click here to see the host's site, but don't order there because I have a better deal for you with little-known discount coupons!" Under Review, have two or three line excerpts from third party reviews, click to expand to the full review right on your page. The coupons are what you sell, actually a membership where for $10 per year the member gets all the latest coupons emailed to them.

Hmm, maybe HostReviewGrid could be the new domain name for your site.

Discard everything in your right side sidebar.

Have two directories, one labeled "articles" and one labeled "blog." The articles are things like "how to choose a host" and they are not dated. The blog posts are very short and date-stamped entries about new reviews and new coupons and when you add new hosts, or remove ones that had too many complaints.

This would result in a useful and valuable site for web developers and internet marketers who'd happily pay you ten bucks to get all the latest coupons they can use themselves or pass along to their clients.

    Regards,
    Allen

If presuming the keyword you are targeting is more along the lines of your domain name I cant imagine people typing in such keyword to buy hosting etc.. although you are number one in your keyword, it may not be a keyword that targets a product so people wont buy it. Maybe look into creating more quality content on keywords people wish to "buy".

Content is king! Your blog looks like a blog instead of a trusted site to buy hosting from. As already suggested, get a new domain name and promote a related product, using hosting as the add-on. You can redirect this site to the new one. Be the expert in your field and don't forget quality content to give your visitors something to keep them on your site.

I don't want to discourage you, but your website looks like a link farm. You need to put some keyword rich content on your site. Whatever your main search terms are, in other words, what someone would type in to find your site, need to be reiterated on your site in the form of articles. I would do a review of the three top sites, that table is way too complex. You are getting traffic, but when people land on your page, the first thing they see is your adsense ads and maybe they don't scroll down to see anything else. I would add in a mailing list opt in box at the top with some sort of a free bonus offer. This will capture the traffic, then you can monetize your visitors by sending them updates weekly or monthly. Sign up at Aweber and start your list there. They have the tools for you to design an opt in box to add to your page. Most people don't buy the first time they land on a page, but if you have captured them in your mailing list, then you can email them on a regular basis and sell to them over and over again. I would add in things like tools for creating a web page, etc.
