I was just wondering do you guys especially list builder out there build separate lists for:

1. Sending good quality information, valuable product suggestions to the specific list which was built by yourself, OR

2. Adswaps, which the broadcast emails are filled with all the random squeeze pages, promotional killer products, canned email swipes, etc??

Thanks in advance!

I usually have a separate list for each traffic source. Tracking conversions has shown me that sign ups from adswaps are lower quality in terms of converting to buyers (earnings per subscriber of around $0.65 per month) than subscribers that have come via articles or blog posts (earnings per subscriber of between $0.87 to 1.24 per month).

I therefore look after the high earning subscribers by not blasting adswaps at them and sending less offers and more useful info. The lower earning subscribers get the adswap broadcasts. You do not want your higher earners on other people's lists.

To take this one stage further, you need to then separate out your buyers from freebie seekers. To keep this simple any buyer from each traffic source list goes onto my buyers list (and if they buy a higher priced product onto my VIP list). These lists in turn get different messages and info.

Hope the above helps, sorry if a bit long winded!

    Best regards

    Luke

Of course, you need to split your lists up for a variety of reasons, i.e. buyers, traffic source, different squeeze, country, niche, and a whole lot more!

I personally do split up my lists for various reasons like some are in different niches, so there's no point in sending the same kind of email to the different groups it won't convert well.

Like Luke above i'm also careful to not blast out emails to my list the whole time but try to offer value to them i.e. what did they subscibe for in the first place, what was their expectations when they originally signed up to my list and am I servicing that properly?

Not only two types. For doing better in long run, you have to maintain several lists coming from different sources. I generally like to do so. it helps me to keep the track.
