I am looking for the easiest but most effective way to cloak an affiliate link. I've never cloaked before but after over a year of using affiliate links, I've finally realized that I should. Some people log into their cpanel and do it there, right? And I also see some people with aweber or tinyurl... I have no idea how any of it works so I am not sure how to even get started. Thanks in advance! |

Here's what I use. Copy the code below into a notepad file and edit the bits in red. Save it with a name of your choice. Then you can upload it to your site and rename it to an html file. <html> <head> <title>Your title here</title> <meta name="description" content="your description"> <meta name="keywords" content="your keywords"> <script>function hidest(){window.status="";} zint=setInterval(hidest,10)</script> </head> <frameset border="0" frameborder="0" marginleft="0" margintop="0" marginright="0" marginbottom="0" rows="100%,*"> <frame src="http://your affiliate link here" scrolling="auto" frameborder="no" border="0" noresize> <frame topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" frameborder="no" border="0" noresize> <noframes> <body> </body> </noframes> </frameset> </html> |

I think the easiest way to do it is with the G-Lock cloaker found here. It completely encrypts the link so it is impossible to get around your affiliate link. It saves the cloaked link as an .html document that you load onto your server.

I like to use a piece of software called Affiliate Link Mask. What I do is paste my affiliate link into a field and it spits out an HTM file which I upload onto my web server: http://mysite.com/recommends/product.htm. |

I use wordpress and uses one plugin called affiliate mask. It works great but the only bad thing is I can't track how many people click on those link. I have to go to my newtork, be it clickbank or anything to check them

I tried one of the methods I found and I have to say - I don't know if it even worked! Hopefully I can get this sorted out soon. Would be nice to find a method for cloaking. Don't know what took me so long to do it!

If you're talking 'disguising' your affiliate links on a page so they're not obviously affiliate links, yeah, use a php location redirect. If you're talking about real actual page cloaking, careful, that stuff can get you banned. |

I am actually trying to do a php direct. I "think" I followed all the steps correctly, but the last step was "Test the link" and I don't know how to do that because I don't know what the link is. When I try what I "think" the link is, it gives me a 404 error page. Does anyone know if that wordpress plugin does a php direct or do I absolutely need to do those in my file manager?

Hello there, Cloaking is the shady practice of presenting different content to a search engine spider than that which is presented to a normal user's browser. Am I missing something here or are you just looking to do a simple redirect? If you're using Apache you can achieve this without any fancy scripts simply by adding a redirect line to your .htaccess file. Something like: Redirect 302 /file/to/redirect your_affiliate_url The /file/to/redirect doesn't need to exist at all and the effect is immediate. Be careful editing htaccess and always take a backup. Have a google for "htaccess redirect" and you will likely find many step-by-step tutorials. Hope that's helpful. Best regards, Phil |

Good thread, I've found using the .htaccess file mentioned above works best for me. Using a free online system always bothered me, because if they disappear your lost.

Hi folks let's clear up a common point of confusion : the difference between encryption and encoding. If you were to number the letters of the alphabet a,b,c... = 1,2,3... etc and then write down something as a list of numbers instead of the letters then that is a form of encoding and certainly not encryption. I would be very skeptical of something which claims to encrypt links for you and fail to see the point of doing so anyway. Of the two methods linked to above (which mention encryption), one simply encodes the link (which is opened in a frame). The other goes to a little more trouble by using the ROT13 cipher, which I guess strictly speaking is a form of encryption, but then so is a child's secret decoder ring. The output just performs a meta-refresh to your affiliate link! Recovering an affiliate link from either is a trivial exercise. Also, these methods use JavaScript. If you're affiliate marketing then I guess you're already hoping that cookies are enabled and now you are also at the mercy of ad and script blockers! Why do people even bother with these things? Please tell me what's the big deal? Your customers are going to fall roughly into two groups: 1) What's a cookie? 2) Enough tech savvy to figure out your affiliate link because you have to tell their browser to go there somehow anyway! So what is wrong with a simple redirect? Quote:

Heya Kohuether I've use (and use) javascript frame encryption, php redirects, and meta-refresh redirects. None of them are especially difficult. But as someone pointed out already, the frames option is against the TOS of a lot of affiliate networks. I bought a neat little solution from a fellow warrior (BlueSquares) at the weekend: Affiliate Link Script - Hide and Track Your Affiliate URL Links with PHP Link Cloaker Wish I'd found it a loooooooooong time ago. It takes about 10 minutes (if you're slow) to install, it's as cheap as chips, it keeps your links in a database away from the prying eyes of robots trawling the net looking for links, and it tracks the click-throughs! I'm (almost) completely in love! There's one small (non big deal) glitch that the developer is looking into.Any trouble with setting up the database, just PM me; I think I have a pdf-tutorial kicking around somewhere that I made a while back... Best of luck with whichever solution you choose! TheNightOwl |

In order for you to be successful you must try all affiliates in this internet marketing world. So, that you would come up with nice feedbacks if it really works for you.

Hi guys, There's some pretty good options already given, but you've still got to mess around with code and ftp and all of that sort of stuff. Too much mucking around! I like the easy way out, and of course the most effective way also. I've been using Michael Silvesters Click2cloak here is the link. Click-2-Cloak All you have to do is paste your affiliate link and paste your ftp details and it will automatically add a redirect page for you. It's similar to the options already been given but with less work. Thanks Matt |

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'm new at this, so please bear with me. If you're not marketing to other marketers (i.e. your target market is "the general public") Is cloaking an affiliate link still necessary? Thanks |

This is definitely a lot to digest! I appreciate everyone coming forward with all the suggestions... I know it will help me in the long run. How do I separate the difference between cloaking and redirecting when I find out a different way of doing it? |

| Just picked it up. I'm a developer myself, but wanted an easy, well developed solution, that I don't have to put any thought into doing. This is it. Thanks for the tip.

Now I am intrigued about the script - is it cloaking or redirecting?

Here is an easy way to cloak your links with a PHP re-direct. In Notepad, type in these lines: <?php header("Location:youraffiliatelinkhere"); ?> Now save it as whatever link you want it to be called, with a .php extension. For example, if that link is going to be for "flowers", you can call the file "flowers.php". Now upload that file to your server, and on your page where you want the link to go, put this code: <a href="yourwebsitename/flowers.php"> When someone clicks on the link, it will go to the file and be re-directed with your affiliate link. |

| I used offto.net for ALL my links, distributed them around the net, clicked on one of them a while later only to discover that the page had been labeled as a virus, as had all my other links. The problem is that people wanting to distribute 'bad stuff' use sites like offto.net and tinyurl etc, once their link is listed as bad then the whole domain is listed as bad! One person can take down the whole system. Or that's my take on it. Quote:
You can manage the whole thing from one Control Panel and it all works with a couple of clicks of a button! You can grab it from the top link in my signature...

@pam Sorry, don't know; I don't use frames anymore. Take a gander at the ClickBank TOS. Best, TheNightOwl |

Thanks, Night Owl. I should have checked Clickbank's TOS before asking. ![]() But I did check and yes, the use of frames is against their TOS. I admit I'm a bit disappointed, because after trying some of the methods mentioned above, a frame was the only way I (actually, my daughter) could mask my affiliate link. Obviously, we had to scrap that and are back to a redirect. The thing is my affiliate id is still up there because I still can't figure out the masking thing. I honestly believe if I didn't have to spend so much time trying to figure out the technical end of things (I'm really bad at this stuff) I would be years ahead of where I am at this point. I'll never stop trying, though! ![]() Thanks again, Pam |
