Market research for Kindle?

Ok, I realise that this is my second kindle related question of the day, but this place is great for getting good answers so..........

If you think you have a good topic for publishing an info book on kindle, how do you go about finding how warm the market is?

Lets say for instance, one of my plans was to write a book on "how to get into the fire service" a specialist subject for me and something that would be of great use to thousands here in the UK! I'm not sure about other countries, but here each brigade has thousands of applicants every year for only a small number of vacancies, and I know I have the knowledge to give people the edge over their competition! but how would I find out how warm that market is? there are no forums or chat rooms on the subject really, so how would you recomend reaching out to these individuals?

......and not just that, in general do you Kindlers do market research before writing a book, or do you just run with it and market it the best way you know how?

Thanks in advance you lovely warriors you!!

I can't speak to how you might do that research in the UK, but if I lived in the USA, I'd use the Google keyword tool to find out if the term "get in the fire service" is searched for and if so how much it is searched in a month.

I would go to Amazon and look for any titles that would be similar to this one and see what their ranking is. The lower the rank the better. I would see how many books there are with similar titles and how they are selling.

I would do a search on Google to see how many pages come up with that phrase.

None of these are perfect methods but at least they might give you a start on deciding if the topic is one that might sell.

And to answer your final question, yes, I do market research on my books before writing. Can't speak for anyone else, though.
