Best hosting companies?

I wondered if I could ask advice about hosting? I have an account with Midphase but haven't really used it yet. Has anyone had good/bad experiences with them?

Am I with a good company - especially if I manage to get lots of traffic building up to my site?
thanks

hostgator is definitely in for the win. I haven't had any issues with them and their online customer support is stellar.

i can tell you that i 100% HAD it with any shared hosting, i just got a VPS and i am "slowly" also looking for a dedicated option.

Its no fun if you got an email that 6 sites have been suspended due to "CPU load" or similar... i DO understand that this causes a problem for anyone else on the shared hosting. (as it caused problems for me if someone ELSE's site on shared hosting uses up all resources with some WP plugins....and basically paralyses all other web sites on the hosting

However, sometimes things like this happen, faulty scripts or cron jobs...and i am not willing anymore to basically risk my whole business and make its function dependant on the decisions of some 3rd party hosting company. That's why i am on VPS now since i wont have those problems anymore with a VPS or dedi.

And the mainstream daddy-gator hosters are the worst....don't even get me started

    thanks for all the advice.

One other question - my site is currently hosted by a small canadian company. I was just going to move the site and domain to midphase as I had signed up for a rich jerk free site that I haven't used (you still have to pay for the hosting).

If I move the site - will this affect search ratings?

It shouldn't have an impact on your search engine rankings, however, if you move to hosting on a shared server (and same IP) with a site that Google doesn't like, it could potentially have a negative impact on you.

A lot of people here have had luck with HostGator, but I've never used them. At one point I was using LunarPages, very affordable shared hosting and pretty good support. I'd have to say stick with hosting companies that offer CPanel hosting, it makes things a lot easier to manage.

For VPS hosting, I've had good luck (and very affordable prices) with RapidVPS, they offer CPanel on all but the cheapest VPS accounts if you choose the right OS (I always go with CentOS, which is basically a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and well supported by CPanel).

One more thing to add, stay away from GoDaddy, for hosting and domain registration.. their hosting is incompatible with a lot of popular scripts, and for domain registration they have an "anti-spam" policy that borders on extortion. Basically if they get any spam complaints (legit or not) about any emails coming from your domain or linking to your domain, they can and will take over your domain and charge you some ridiculous amount to get it back.
