How Can you tell if your Website has a virus

I did a google search on the above question, but not sure of some of the things I read. (one of the options was assistance from Google but if they find your site has been infected they will report it in the search engines ... yikes - I'd rather try to figure this out and get it fixed on my own and fast I hope.)

Is there a quick way to tell if a website has been attacked by a virus and if so what's the 1st step to take in finding out and clearing it up?

I have 2 websites that had strange actions happen lately. One site is several years old and the other site is only a few months old that I had custom built for me.

My traffic logs also have strange events and spikes going on.

I'm a bit worried that maybe they have been hacked somehow and now have a virus.

Thanks so much.

If you use Webmaster Tools it tells you the health of your site. ie if you have any malware.

Thanks Elle I saw that in Google which is where they also state if your site has been infected with malware, they'll also identify your site as infected in our search results to protect other users.

I understand their reasoning for doing this, but would like to figure out if it has been infected and get it cleaned as soon as possible without it being reported in the search engines or hurting anyone's computer.

Hopefully, they are not infected - especially the custom site as it had a security plug-in installed that was suppose to prevent hacking, etc.

Thanks again. I appreciate your time in replying. Maybe I'll just contact Host Gator and see if they can help me with this.

      Have a great day!

virustotal.com lets you scan url's, you could start there.
I've also heard that Host Gator is pretty good with that type of support so, it's worth a shot to see if they can help.

        Hope everything works out,
        good luck.
