Why Do People Work For Free?

Why do so many people work for free and make someone else rich?
Is this because people can afford it and don't mind spending time working for free rather than building their own business or hanging out with friends or family?

99% of people work for free without even realizing it.

It's called an affiliate program, but they do earn a percentage if they sell. The good thing is they promote and put your site's on the map.

I'm to new to it to figure it out yet, backlinks weren't the same in the early days, but if people don't buy you may be getting those links and higher rankings so, they would be working for free.

This is a fantastic subject matter!

I suppose we all work for free in some shape or form from day-to-day.

Most of the time even without realising it I suppose.

This definitely something that we all should consider when using our time wisely or are we using it wisely enough.

Great post keep posting these types of questions!!!

There is no such thing as "working for free"...
People work without monetary involvement because they enjoy doing it.
Take note "they enjoy doing it for some personal reasons", so therefore they are getting something in return. Whether its psychological or mental advantage, they'll get it. So its not free....

Do you know the meaning of the word free?

By the way, I have always wondered why so many people contribute to projects like Wikipedia for example. I think it's human nature to want to belong to something big, bigger than ourselves.

I have some contributions in wikipedia with my local pages. The reason why people contribute for "free" is because, as I mentioned above, they love sharing and there's a lot of personal benefits from that.

If I was an owner of Youtube, Facebook or some forum, then from my perspective I'd have millions of people building my business and costing me not a single penny. Of course I would have paid employees, but they wouldn't have even been hired if I didn't have the free "workers".
Of course each person has his reasons to contribute and even make tons of money WHILE working for free. Confusing?
Look at the article directories. People are willing to submit content for a backlink, which in most directories is a "no follow" anyway. So they build your directory for a link that cost you nothing. There wouldn't even be a page to place this link on if the marketer didn't submit the article.

There are at least 4 ways to build your own business.

      1. Do everything yourself
      2. Hire someone to build it for you
      3. Have a lot of people do it for free
      4. It gets even better -- have someone to do all the work and even PAY you for the privilege of working for you.

How about #4? Don't tell me this is impossible, esp. if you thought #3 was impossible.

No monetary value but it's not free for the reasons below:

        1. I am learning while I'm staying in this forum
        2. I'm getting more customers
        3. Somehow I'm helping other people and that's increases my self-esteem and self-confidence

So it's not free as I'm getting something back in return...

Never work for free, you will always learn something new that you can monetize in future. Of course problem is when you preferred working for somebody who don't give you enough money that you deserved. And instead of leaving the job, you stay and make somebody else rich for no reason. That's what i assume as Problem.

Just an example. I see a lot of very easy programming tasks posted on freelancer. Some people are paying $150 or so, to fix a bug or get a simple script.
Now, I had a bug in my script that was driving me nuts. I wasted 2 hours trying to figure out what was wrong. I was even thinking of posting a job on freelancer, but before I did I posted it on StackOverflow. Guess what? I got the solution within 2 minutes. Not only that, but I had 3 people who provided the solution for free. Well it was free for me, but they had their reasons. They earned some "points" for fixing my problem. So you don't have to pay people money, you can offer them the points, medals, tokens, or silver and gold member status after reaching 10,000 post on forum. You get the idea. People have so many different reasons to work for free. It's been already written down 100 years ago by Napoleon Hill. In fact he even says "never hire a person who works for your money, but him who does it for the love of it."

Edit: BTW, I have noticed that at least two people (Joe and JaRyCu) have announced that they will take a break from working for free.

How much have you been paid to make 1500 posts? That you don't understand is that you are a free labor from the site owner's viewpoint. If I am a site owner, it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg when you make millions using my site. For me you are a free labor. I want to hire people for "free" and I want to understand why people work for free, that's the whole point. If they don't even realize that they work for free that's even better for me.

One thing is helping out a friend the other thing is spending 1500 minutes in someone else's restaurant and pass the salt for free to everyone who asks for it. Will you spend 25 hours in my restaurant to pass the salt to strangers for free? I would love to hire you.

I have got my answers. You can completely ignore the possibility of hiring people for free and do all your work yourself.

There is no such thing as working for free, at least perhaps, to most people.
People who work without receiving any monetary compensation are benefited non-monetarily. What are these non-monetary compensations? Let me know a few out of many.

    1. fame
    2. feeling of self-fulfillment
    3. strengthened reputation

So, if you work by getting any non-monetary compensation, that's still not 'free' because you received something intangibly.

A lot of what I do is "work" for free, but that's because I see tons of value in giving away what I know to empower others. The reality is that when I do this, I make money in the long run through relationships I build, so to me I'd rather give and make a lot long term than make a little short term.

There are a few instances I can think of that make sense for a person to work for "free":

    1. Internships -- to build skills and develop networking opportunities
    2. Beginning a freelance career -- to build up samples & testimonials
    3. Volunteering - to help out a friend or a cause

I think it's interesting you're focusing on the 'free' part, when in reality, working strategically without monetary compensation can be a very smart business move. While you may not be receiving money, you are getting compensated in other ways, such as gaining experience, getting samples and potential referrals, or contributing to a cause you believe in.

You just need to decide in advance how long you plan to work for 'free', and what deadline you'll give yourself to move on to monetary compensation.
