What converts best for membership sites?

I have noticed that you tend to get two kinds of landing pages for membership sites:

1. Standard sales letters
2. More of a '2.0' style, with at least two columns including login options

I am starting a new membership site (non IM niche) and am wondering if any of my fellow Warriors have thoughts/experiences of what type of page converts better.

Thanks for any input!

    Yes I noticed that too
soon your mailing list will be renting for more money than you'll pay for the house
payment and not to affiliates and guru's.

after all the no call list law's if the big recycle machine can't get your attention on tv,radio, cell phone, bill boards and junk mail why not your email?

And that is not a bad thing if it benefits All. But you know it does not work like that
    in reality.

So what I do I'll signup using My yaba daba doo at yazoo. com and if i like what i see
then it is ok to give my email,,,DNA sample and heck if the program is real good i may
    give my hoof print Hello......

and that is my story and i'am sticking to it

Can anybody else offer some input into membership sales letters?

Can you give us an example of each?

From your original post I don't think there is very much difference between the salesletters you're talking about -- just a little formatting which may or may not help or hurt you depending on many factors.

Looking now for the translation book. I could use $5.

I personally think it is fine to have the sales page on the front, as long as there is a link or gateway to get to the private area from there. I think it provides more mystery of what is behind the door.

But I honestly don't know which converts better.

I have a one-post blog that is basically my sales page for signing up for a free membership.

This is how I'm dripping my book (selling for $24.95 at Amazon) for free. It should give you some ideas.
