Email Marketing - Lists

Hello Warriors,

I've been a member on here for quite some time and have read tons of great tips. I have primarily driven traffic to offers via social networks (POF, FB, etc.) but am now interested in learning to be an emailer.

My verticals are Financial and Insurance.

It's a little overwhelming on figuring out where to start. My first question would probably be about EMAIL LISTS. Do I build them, or buy them?

If i'm buying where are some great sources to buy from? If i'm building, what is the best way to build them?

Thanks
-Tyler

    Build and buy.
You build by offering something in exchange for their email- you send traffic to the page that collects the emails. Traffic is sent by building traffic, think forum posts, article marketing, press releases, SEO, guest blogging etc.. You buy traffic with PPC, CPA, buying solo ads.

You can also create a list by doing a product launch and getting lots of affiliates to promote, think this blends build and buy.

      Hey David,

Thanks for your response! To clarify why you said; to build an email list i'll want to build a page with an opt-in that saves emails in exchange for some type of reward. To generate the traffic to that page i'll just promote it using PPC or SEO.

As far as building that page goes however, i'll want to make the "reward" something to do with my vertical (Financial or Insurance) correct?

      Thanks again,
      -Tyler

        Hey Tyler,

What you're referring to would be some time of incentive, or "optin bait" to persuade them to join your list. Great things for this would be eBooks or "Top ## Lists"...for example -- "7 Reasons Why You Can't Live Without Insurance", or "10 Ways To Earn 10% Interest On Your Money ", etc. Those are great ways to get folks to join your list.

A key to email marketing is content, content, content. Don't slam them with offers as soon as they join your list -- give than quality content and a reason to continue to engage your messages.

You'll eventually build a loyal following, and you'll see stronger response from the monetizable offers you do send to your list.

Another strong method of monetizing your list is sending folks to a page with quality content as well as some Adsense ads, relevant to their initial reason for opting in. Adsense ads on financial and insurance verticals pay out top dollar on each click.

        Hope that helps!

        Phil

If you buy them you will get a crap list. but some of them will not be crap. So you have to buy them and also you have to create your own lists too.
this is the best option to success in Email marketing.
    thanks

I would never buy a list. You have to work hard and earn the respect of your list, buying a list will will not give that to you. You can make a living if your list trust you and the relationship is there. Also, if you buy a list and send offers to them, they can scream "spam" real quick....

You should build your own lists. You can buy but depending on your own list is always safe. If your vendor is not a good one, your purchased list will not work at all. Depending on your niche, just start working to make a list for own.

I agree with David-JP. There is no shortcuts. Traffic builds traffic. Find good spots to advertise your product or service, capture the lead, offer something in return, make sure your content is well presented and keep on doing the same process.

If it was easy to build a good list, everybody would have done it...

    You build them.

The reason the list is worth so much to you is that it represents people who know and trust you, who are willing to open your emails, read them, and act on your recommendations, because of the relationship they have with you.

It's almost as simple as that.

Building your own lists is a good idea and it takes time,
money and effort to do it effectively.

You can also use legitimate list services like NextMark to
put you in touch with other businesses who have already
gone throught the time, effort and money to assemble
    lists in your target market.

Type in the keywords of your vertical markets and select
'Email Lists' from the drop-down menu to get an idea of
the size of e-mail lists available via NextMark:

Media Finder - NextMark (no affil.)

In this case, you're not buying the list though.

You need a free offer to exchange for the email address of your visitors. This needs to be a compelling offer. It could be an ebook, free report, video, video course, audio file or anything really. It has to be an irresistable free offer. This is an analogy I came up with this morning...

Think of the thing that your market wants the most. For example say if the telephone number of the emergency services changed all the time and was kept on the "thank you" page behind a squeeze page. How well do you think that squeeze page would convert its visitors into subscribers? Your free offer needs to be something your visitors are desperate to have, such a good offer that they cannot refuse it.

Never buy a list. But you can buy solo ads to your free offer sent by other list owners in exchange for money.

If you are going to buy lists and send emails to them (spam them) then you will need autoresponders with two different companies.

Eventually the company that you are using to send spam will ban you after they get too many people saying that you have sent them spam.

With the spam emails you are trying to then get people to sign up to your other autoresponder. Then you have a list of people who want to hear from you.

There are problems with this method. The lists you buy are usually not all that good. For example, people have stopped using that email as it has that much spam coming in that it is not worth their while looking at it any longer.

Another factor is that because you have spammed them, you start the relationship with negative trust and have to try to claw your way back.

Using an autoresponder series of tips would be a better way to generate a list of people who will open your emails. Like tips for reducing the cost of your insurance or tips to reduce your banking costs.

Put one tip on a social media page that sends them back to a squeeze page that has a couple of more tips on it and then let them sign up to your mailing list if they want more tips.

I'd advise not to buy lists as you'll never know what sort of list you'll get.The worst thing you can do is to waste unnecessary money on something that might not convert for you.

You can purchase solo ads that are relevant to your niche to speed up the process of list building.

If you want to build your list fast then solo ads are very effective as long as you have a half decent
    sales funnel in place

also solo ads are also great for testing your squeeze pages and OTO pages to see what they convert at with real targeted traffic

it really depends what you have more of, time or money

if you have more time though then results will be slower

    Hi,

You can either build a landing page to get leads or purchase leads (i suggest you to buy from Getresponse).

Okay thanks for all of the input, it seems like the best way to get a list is to build it yourself lol

Next questions is what is the best way to collect the data?
So say I build a squeeze page with an email submission. Is there a service that takes the submitted information and puts it into a file? or maybe an HTML code that will do the same?

An auto-responder will collect the email submissions for you. Most auto-responders will generate the code that you will insert on your squeeze page or landing page to collect email addresses and then put them in a file that you can save on your computer or export to another responder service.

Buying a list may seem faster but may turn out to
be the more expensive option. You really are looking
at money and time and you can seldom have both.

Building takes longer but could be cheaper and buying
takes less time but would cost you more money.

You are also in a very competitive market so expect
to spend some money on marketing.

You build them, not buy them... definitely. I'm surprised that you're using POF (Plenty Of Fish) to market your business. My cousin uses this site to meet women, but hasn't had alot of luck lol.

Do free marketing and do heavy advertising if you want 100+ new leads coming in everyday. If you dont have the money to do that right now, get a $7.25/hr job and devote half (if not 3/4) of your job income to advertise more online.
